Somerset County has a population of 240,279 and has a corporate, commercial and industrial base. It is 40 miles from New York City and is characterized as an agricultural and suburban geographical location. The nutrition program began 22 years ago under federal funding and is a direct service of the Somerset County Area Agency on Aging, a public county government administration. County government has supported the nutrition program generously since the earliest years of existence, and has consistently increased funding for home delivered meals. The nutrition program includes the administration of eight multipurpose senior centers serving over 825 unduplicated clients congregate meals and serving over 630 unduplicated clients home-delivered meals in 1996. The meals served in 1996 included 117,525 total meals47,651 congregate meals, 67,730 home delivered meals, and 2,144 state-funded weekend and holiday meals. The nutrition budget in 1996 was $993,346. The meals are purchased from a contract vendor from northern New Jersey. The menus are planned by the Nutrition Director who is a Registered Dietitian. Inservice training for food service and senior center managers is a priority and follows a schedule that is planned in advance. The director currently is researching ways to incorporate modified diets into the home delivered program for clients who are under a physician's care.

Extractions: Westfield, New Jersey Networks offer alternative routes for programs and community action with a sense of sharing and cooperation among agencies and people. They can open new avenues of communication, contacts, and resources, and can link people with similar goals. On transferring to Union County as Extension home economist, I discovered no coordination of nutrition programs, services, and information existed among agencies such as Division on Aging Nutrition Services; Women, Infants and Children Project; Food Stamps; Head Start; etc. Following many office visits and phone calls with agencies and organizations, a decision was made to establish a Nutrition Network with the goals of (1) fostering cooperation between agencies and (2) providing reliable nutrition information to people in the county. The idea was explored with a nutrition consultant in the state Health Department. As a result, 17 people, including home economists, dietitians, school lunch directors, and nutrition consultants, were invited to the first meeting. Nine professionals attended. This meeting provided an opportunity to get acquainted and exchange ideas on programs and clientele reached and referral procedures. Six months later, the group had grown to 18 members. Today, there are 27 members, including some health officers who asked to join.

Thousands of New Jersey parents go without health insurance, even though their children may be covered through NJKidCare. This can force parents to go without medical care until a more serious problem develops. Research shows that parents who have health insurance are more likely to be sure that their children get immunizations and regular check-ups, so making affordable health insurance available to parents can be helpful to both parents and children.
