Extractions: Many Americans have experienced a red or white spot or sore in their mouths. Often these are harmless. However, in some cases, these spots and sores can indicate the early signs of oral cancer. Men and women over age 18 are invited to a free oral screening at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) on Thursday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to noon, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The screenings will be held at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School, 110 Bergen Street in Newark, and at the University Dental Center located at 13 Somerdale Square, Somerdale. The UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School is a founding member institution of the Oral Cancer Consortium, which is sponsoring the fourth annual Oral Cancer Screening in New Jersey and New York. Individuals participating in the screenings will receive a comprehensive oral cancer examination administered by a dental professional. If a suspicious looking spot or sore is found, the dental professional may administer a painless brush biopsy test to determine if potentially cancerous cells are present.

Extractions: FALL 2001 NEWSLETTER Organizations around the nation have decried the current school design and construction paradigm arguing that drab stucco boxes which take decades to build simply aren't conducive to learning, let alone community engagement or neighborhood revitalization. However, because of a recent legal victory in New Jersey, we may be seeing the beginning of a large-scale model that cities around the nation can follow not merely to implement new design guidelines for schools, but truly incentivize school districts to think creatively. NSBN is pleased to offer this excerpt from a paper written by Ellen Shoshkes, Senior Planner with the New Jersey Office of State Planning which details the state's new facility mandate. New Jersey's approach to provide equal educational opportunities for all children also goes well beyond court ordered measures to end disparities in school financing among rich and poor towns in Vermont and New York. In addition to the construction program, the New Jersey Supreme Court mandate ordered the implementation of "whole school reform" in all elementary schools in the Abbott districts. Whole school reform involves a systematic restructuring of an entire school engaging the participation of the schools faculty, administration, students, parents and other community stakeholderswhich "must be implemented as interrelated parts of a comprehensive program." The wide consensus about the effectiveness of whole school reform is closely aligned with the consensus forming around the concept of community-based schools.

According to the poll results, people felt everyone in the community should be involved with their local schools, and that the schools should be community resources offering programs and services beyond the traditional school day. Respondents supported community use of facilities during afternoon, evening and weekend hours for health clinics, recreation activities, parenting and adult education classes. They agreed that schools should offer mental health services for students; and social services for children like health services, dental services, and after school programs should be located and provided within local public schools.
