Extractions: It is early in the morning and Jacob and Patricia Magarire and their ten-month-old baby still have eight kilometers to go. They are heading for the business center in Basera to register for food distribution. Hundreds of people have gathered in Basera, a village in southern Zimbabwe's Gutu province. Here, long-time Church World Service partner, Christian Care (CC), is registering villagers, with a goal of reaching more than 83,000 people for general feeding and nearly 43,000 children under five for supplementary feeding in Gutu and Umguza provinces. In addition, it is providing drought-tolerant seeds to some 15,513 households to enable them to produce their own food next season. People are registered and vetted for the feeding programs according to their needs. "The level of poverty is the main criteria we use," says Courage Chirobe, a CC program officer. "Also, female or child-headed-households are considered first."
