Homeroom.com Improves Student Math Scores On The Texas Assessment Of Academic Skills (New York, NY and Austin, TX, November 13, 2000) - Homeroom.com, a division of The Princeton Review, announced today that students who used Homeroom.com in a pilot program during the 1999-2000 school year demonstrated greater improvement on the math TAAS than those students who did not use the program. Homeroom.com, a Web-based educational tool designed to improve school performance as measured by an increase on scores on high-stakes standardized tests, was piloted in more than 25 Texas schools during the 1999-2000 school year. Analysis of test results for the five Houston-based schools that submitted their scores indicates that the use of Homeroom had a significant impact on score improvements over scores achieved during the prior academic year. The sample includes students in grades 4, 6, 7 and 8. As illustrated by the following table, students in grades 4 and 6 showed the greatest year-to-year improvement. Specifically, fourth grade students improved their scores twice as much as non-users; sixth grade Homeroom users improved nearly 4%, while non-users experienced a slight decline in scores. Lastly, seventh grade users score improvement was 16 times greater than that of non-users.

Advanced Information Systems The Living Schoolbook creates a unique learning environment enabling teachers and students to use multimedia-on-demand, supercomputers, parallel databases, and networking as educational resources. Three educational software applications have been developed using these technologies and are being made available to six schools across New York State: Digital Libraries Kid's Web is a World Wide Web digital library for school kids, that is being developed as part of the Living Schoolbook. The project is the result of a "data mine" of the World Wide Web of resources to create a "Cached Internet" of resources (locally stored at NPAC) to support focused teacher selection of material and high performance delivery over NYNET. Selection of the material is conducted by teacher teams to provide high-value materials, efficiency in teacher preparation time and a focus on K-12 appropriate material. Plans are to implement searches that are supported by knowledge agents from a variety of sources. Selected Kid's Web material can also be made available by CD ROM to school sites with poor Internet access.
