Extractions: Speech to the New York State Board of Regents, February 2000 Good morning - Chancellor Hayden, honorable members of the Board Regents, Commissioner Mills and guests. Thank you for the opportunity to discuss a few of the recommendations that the Governor's Task Force on School Violence has suggested for implementation. Before I begin, I would like to applaud all of you for your commitment to the youth of our state. This past year has been a challenge for all those involved in the education of our most precious resource, our children. New York's students are faced with an even greater challenge. Their challenge is twofold. First, they must work hard to meet the standards. Second, they must learn in an atmosphere that has been clouded by fear. This is unacceptable, but together we can make a difference. Over the last several years, we have seen horrific acts of violence occurring in schools across our country. Fortunately, New York's schools have not had an incident that mirrors Columbine High. By and large our schools are safe. However, we must take steps today to ensure a safer tomorrow for our students. Indeed, we can take steps to reduce the potential for violence in our schools and ensure that members of our school community are prepared to address problems before they result in a tragedy.
