Ultimately this tree will reach at least 6 metres. Rimu is a fine, even textured, medium density softwood. Seasoned heartwood is usually a rich red-brown colour with hues of golden yellow. It has a pigmented figure which produces an attractive finishing timber. The intermediate zone is a varied light brown colour giving rise to interesting shadings of colour and grain. The sapwood has a lighter brown tone and is generally even in colour.

In a story that's become all to familiar, fairy penguins are losing land to humans, and even in the part of Australia where their numbers are strongest - Phillip Island, southeast of Melbourne - they've lost over three-quarters of their breeding grounds because of human activity in the last 80 years.
