Extractions: New Zealand Nature New Zealand History New Zealand Culture New Zealand Nature New Zealand Facts Orginally, 80% of New Zealand's land area was forested. Today, about 23% remains and one of New Zealand's major attractions is this large amount of wilderness which is home to many unique plants and animals. Kiwi One of our most popular trips and also a native New Zealand tree! Although Rimu grows throughout New Zealand, harvesting is now concentrated predominantly on the West Coast of the South Island. Harvesting of this resource in now done by helicopter which preserves the forest in its natural state. A slow growing tree that we have in abundance on our property! Perhaps one only would be better as a graceful specimen tree (for 3 or 4 decades!). It has long drooping flexible branches with bright olive green, tiny cypress-like foliage. Ultimately this tree will reach at least 6 metres. Rimu is a fine, even textured, medium density softwood. Seasoned heartwood is usually a rich red-brown colour with hues of golden yellow. It has a pigmented figure which produces an attractive finishing timber. The intermediate zone is a varied light brown colour giving rise to interesting shadings of colour and grain. The sapwood has a lighter brown tone and is generally even in colour.

APP Zoos critical data now protected with new Internet security solution Sydney, 18 September 2001: Computer Associates (CA) today announced an agreement with the Zoological Parks Board of NSW to install its new InoculateIT 6.0 software at both Taronga Zoo and the Western Plains Zoo to protect critical data. Using CA's anti-virus software, the Zoos can constantly monitor and manage their systems across the entire network spanning both zoos from one location to protect against today's most prevalent security threat - viruses. John Inkson, Systems Administrator for Taronga Zoo said "From one central location, I can now perform remote installations, assign policies to machines across the network and access Internet updates to automatically protect each desktop in both locations. "The software will also alert IT staff to any virus incidents, allowing them to take immediate action before problems affect the network or any of our business partners.

Extractions: Most of the information here may talk specifically of the Tasmanian population of Little penguins, but the folks at this island state's Parks and Wildlife Service have done a pretty good job of presenting some good general information on these unique Australasian birds. They've provided some interesting information about colonies and nest sites and even lets people in on the song of the little penguin, or fairy penguin, as it's also called. There's also good context for why the fairy penguin is having some problems in certain areas of its habitat. Once again, this website is strong on text and light on visuals - with only one photograph - but is worth a peek. Visit this site now Go to our Links Section for more online resources By: Steven Hunt - Along with some of the most unusual wildlife on the planet, Australia can also claim to be home to the world's smallest species of penguin, the fairy or little penguin. They generally live along the southeastern seaboard of the Australian continent, though there are also populations in Tasmania and New Zealand. In a story that's become all to familiar, fairy penguins are losing land to humans, and even in the part of Australia where their numbers are strongest - Phillip Island, southeast of Melbourne - they've lost over three-quarters of their breeding grounds because of human activity in the last 80 years. In January 2000, they were dealt an even greater blow.

Extractions: As one of the few places in the world that's become synonymous with killer whale research as well as keeping them in captivity, the Vancouver Aquarium has set up an entire page of popularly asked questions on these unique black and white marine mammals, with some great answers to boot. There aren't any images to look at specifically on this page, but if ready-to-use information on orcas is what you're looking for this is a great place to stop. There are also links to other Vancouver Aquarium pages with everything from the history of the aquarium to how to become a whale researcher. A well put-together site and one where you just keep on digging and digging with more and more interesting tidbits to uncover.
