   Extractions: Origins "Nihilism" comes from the Latin nihil , or nothing, which means not anything, that which does not exist. It appears in the verb "annihilate," meaning to bring to nothing, to destroy completely. Early in the nineteenth century, Friedrich Jacobi used the word to negatively characterize transcendental idealism. It only became popularized, however, after its appearance in Ivan Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons (1862) where he used "nihilism" to describe the crude scientism espoused by his character Bazarov who preaches a creed of total negation. In Russia, nihilism became identified with a loosely organized revolutionary movement (C.1860-1917) that rejected the authority of the state, church, and family. In his early writing, anarchist leader Mikhael Bakunin (1814-1876) composed the notorious entreaty still identified with nihilism: "Let us put our trust in the eternal spirit which destroys and annihilates only because it is the unsearchable and eternally creative source of all lifethe passion for destruction is also a creative passion!" ( Reaction in Germany , 1842). The movement advocated a social arrangement based on rationalism and materialism as the sole source of knowledge and individual freedom as the highest goal. By rejecting man's spiritual essence in favor of a solely materialistic one, nihilists denounced God and religious authority as antithetical to freedom. The movement eventually deteriorated into an ethos of subversion, destruction, and anarchy, and by the late 1870s, a nihilist was anyone associated with clandestine political groups advocating terrorism and assassination.

The text survives only in summary form in Sextus Empiricus, and Aristotle's On Melissus, Xeonphanes, and Gorgias The second proposition of Gorgias, that if anything exists it cannot be known, is part and parcel of the whole Sophistic tendency of thought, which identifies knowledge with sense-perception, and ignores the rational element. Since sense-impressions differ in different people, and even in the same person, the object as it is in itself cannot be known. The third proposition follows from the same identification of knowledge with sensation, since sensation is what cannot be communicated.

Through the genealogy I will try to define discourse in broadly Derridean terms, as related by Martin, and use the constructive ideas following from it. I wish to avoid the "relegation of the subject", which I find in Martin, because of a "romantic" agenda (to be found in Lukacs and Camus) which treats the subject as a centre of meaning. This is a logical necessity - nihilism is essentially the belief in nothing and meaning is its opposite. This conception of the subject will be linked to a concept of discourse. Due to the constraint of space, and my own reading habits, I regret that I have not given sufficient space to the issue of gender. However, I have not ascribed gender to "the inmate" and have tried to deal with positionality and the heroine (in Dostoyevsky's work). In this text I have used reasoned arguments to present my case but regret that I have not had the space or time to pursue Derrida's question as to the status of Foucault's critique of reason. This text occurs within the discourse of philosophy and its rationalism is a recognition of this. The text is Nomadic, it travels via the route of philosophical argument to the irrational domain of subjects and meaning. Derrida, in `Spurs' recognises that the history of truth is appropriation and that style must be plural. Is genealogy an appropriation of the philosophical style? When I turn my attention to the role of discourse, discourse will be shown to exist not merely as a function of language but also of power, i.e., I am presenting a philosophical argument, thus the styles of this work.

By the end of my course I was reading English translations of Russian classics by Gogol, Dostoyevsky and Turgenev. I have not read much Russian literature, by the way, because finishing Crime and Punishment pursuaded me I should begin writing myself. I was prompted to read Crime and Punishment because I'd read Lukacs' Theory of the novel and Camus' Rebel. Coming to grips with nihilism seemed like the way to go. My reading habits had already this taken that direction. I'd read about Nazism in detail in the past. I'd read Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago, Nietzsche, Adorno and Horkheimer, and Foucault. In fiction I'd read Burgesses Clockwork Orange and Orwell's 1984. I was simply tired of philosophy and so bought a lot of diverse writing together under the umbrella of a study of nihilism. The resulting essay is written in its own style, it's heavy on quotes, this lets the books I studied "speak for themselves". I hope this style will make the thoughts accessible to those who may not have read the source literature as well as those who have.
