Extractions: HarperCollins, 1997, 258 pages, paperback Everyone's favorite cubicle-dwelling, long-suffering, comic strip character, along with his ever-present sidekicks Dogbert, Ratbert, Wally, and the pointy-haired boss, help illustrate this look into the near future as only Scott Adams can give it to us. A laugh riot for the first 13 chapters, Adams peers into his crystal ball (and who can say how cloudy it really is?), telling us of the growing dichotomy between "Induhviduals" and those of us smart enough to actually read this book. He covers the gamut of world-shaking (and not-so-important) changes on the way, including a great deal of technological predictions (such as that future life will not be like Star Trek ) and the possibility of life on other planets, or in Europe. Lavishly illustrated with old Dilbert comic strips, the book is by turns hilarious and frightening, but always mentally stimulating. The fourteenth, and last, chapter, however, Adams dedicates to a very odd view of the future which will probably make you think. He consciously stops telling jokes (and "Real Story"s, and "Made-Up Story"s) in Chapter 13, and turns here to an attempt to completely alter your perceptions of how reality works. In some places, he got me thinking about it. I wonder if I would have included the last chapter in the same book if I had written it, but this is how it stands, and it's a very entertaining, and somewhat thought-provoking, read.

Extractions: by Nick Gevers INTRODUCTION Since his first short story appeared about twenty years ago, Michael Swanwick has been one of American SF's most stylish and subversive writers, bringing to his intense, finely wrought stories and novels a sardonic intelligence that has few literary peers. His output is spare: he publishes relatively infrequently, averaging one novel every three years, and all of his works share an economy of length that only serves to emphasize how compressedly rich a volume of symbolic and speculative material each of them contains. To open a Swanwick text is to broach an aesthetic Pandora's box: fascination and disturbance inevitably and rewardingly follow. As a novelist, Swanwick showed his gifts quickly. Although In the Drift (1985), a portrait of an America rendered savage and strange by nuclear meltdown, is somewhat loose structurally, it is highly atmospheric; Vacuum Flowers (1987) is a bravura exercise in cyberpunk-tinged space opera, delineating a colonized Solar System of infectious energy and great danger.
