Extractions: (Pearson Education Technologies' NovaNet) In an algebra class of 30 students, one student takes the course for a second time. He sits in the back of the room, spending more time feeling lost than working on task. As he falls farther and farther behind, his class moves ahead without him. Im never going to graduate, he laments. Why try? Why sit here and behave? Why come back tomorrow? And once again, he slips into the cracks. One of the things we know from retention research is that if you retain a child or make a child take a class over again and dont do anything different for them, it tends to perpetuate a cycle of failure, said Dr. Ron Anderson, senior director of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Grant for the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) in Raleigh, North Carolina. When students feel a sense of failure, they feel disconnected from the school. That often ends up translating into a wide range of behavior issues, some of which become school safety and discipline issues. To address the distinct but inter-related issues of academic success and student behavior, WCPSS sought to create a new educational model where students who were at risk of failing or dropping out could succeed and get back on track for graduation. It found such a solution in its own backyard.

Extractions: Independent (Private) Schools The Cape Fear region's private schools offer curricula and activities for children from preschool to high school. While tuition and expenses are the responsibility of the parent or guardian, most of these schools offer financial aid or easy-pay plans. In many cases, having more than one child in a particular school allows a discount on tuition for other children within the same family. All private schools aren't listed here, but the following list suggests some alternatives to public education. Cape Fear Academy Cape Fear Academy is the dominant secular private school in the region. Established in 1967, this coeducational day school is open to students interested in a traditional, challenging, college-preparatory education. The program offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum within a stimulating learning environment. The academy's mission statement, "To be a learning community sharing a commitment to respect, integrity and academic excellence," forms the framework for student life at the school as well as fostering a spirit of unity and high ideals. Close relationships with teachers are encouraged. There are approximately 530 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students participate in half-day programs, with after-school care available. The Lower School comprises pre-kindergarten through grade 5. Instruction by professional faculty includes art, music, science, foreign language (Spanish), drama, computer science and physical education.

Introduction Welcome to the story of a teacher and an assistant at two alternative Schoolsin north carolina one in Alamance County and one in Johnston County. http://www.ibiblio.org/smiley/altprog/0.html
Extractions: Introduction The drive to Sellars-Gunn Education Center can be rather intimidating. I-85 only shows the clothing outlets in Burlington, NC, but a short drive down one of the sideroads will show a different picture of the town. Low-income housing prevails in Burlington and Graham, with the middle- and upper-class neighborhoods few and hard to find. The textile industry, once strong in Alamance County, has left behind two towns of people with little or no income and two towns with a serious housing problem. Sellars-Gunn Education Center is located near one of the worst parts of town. It is located near Ireland Street and Autumn Lanes, notorious in Alamance County for violent crimes and drug-trafficking, crimes which are committed mostly by teens and young adults. Sellars-Gunn itself is ominous: if you drive to the back part of the building you are greeted with a 10-foot fence topped off with barbed wire. When I first drove into this place I would be working for a year, I immediately thought it looked like a prison. In some sense I felt as if I were working in one. Welcome to the story of a teacher and an assistant at two Alternative Schools in North Carolina: one in Alamance County and one in Johnston County. These two schools arose from the same program, the "Safe Schools" grant. The Safe Schools program in North Carolina, as implemented in Alamance County, is designed to provide a two-pronged approach to the reduction of violence in North Carolinas public schools. The first part, called "prevention," is the "prejudice reduction" workshops offered to teachers and other educators in the school system. In Alamance County, these workshops included mostly issues on race and cultural diversity. The second part, called "intervention," is the creation of an alternative school to remove violent and chronically disruptive students from the traditional classroom setting.

Alternatives To The Court System One basic alternative to court litigation is dispute settlement centers in north Carolinausing mediation others conduct mediation programs in public schools. http://www.aoc.state.nc.us/www/copyright/jsnc/altct.html
Extractions: In recent years, North Carolina has been experimenting with resolving disputes by methods other than litigation. Court litigation is not the best method for solving all disputes, and the time and cost of litigation has made it important to look to alternative methods of resolving disputes. The North Carolina Bar Association has worked closely with the Administrative Office of the Courts in supporting efforts to experiment with alternative methods of dispute resolution. In 1991 the General Assembly authorized a pilot program for mediated settlement conferences in superior court cases; today the program is available in all counties. The program requires superior court litigants and their attorneys to participate in a settlement conference with a paid mediator before their case can be tried in court. A similar program functions for litigants in worker's compensation cases before the Industrial Commission. In 1995, the General Assembly created the Dispute Resolution Commission to administer mediator certification and regulate mediator conduct. The Commission includes judges, mediators, attorneys, and citizens. Mediation also is used in family law cases in the district court. Mediation of child custody and visitation disputes, first begun experimentally in Mecklenburg County, has been endorsed by the General Assembly. Currently twenty-five district court districts have court-ordered mediation of child ustody and visitation disputes, and the program will be expanded to other counties as money becomes available.
