Extractions: At this level, the Outreach office of the Duke-UNC Program in Latin American Studies focuses on strengthening relationships with NC schools, providing Latin American resources for classroom use and aiding educators abilities to incorporate Latin American content in language, social studies, communications and art instruction. This is accomplished through professional development workshops, a lending library of Latin American materials, school visit programs, artists in schools programs and traveling art exhibits. The Outreach office has developed a three-year program to help educators learn more about the Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican world and provide techniques, curriculum material, and hands on experience which can be easily integrated into today's elementary, middle, and secondary school curricula. In 1998 and 1999 two workshops were organized by the Duke-UNC programs, and in the year 2000 sixteen teachers who participated in those workshops had the opportunity to participate in a two week field trip to Mexico. In May 1998, the Program, in collaboration with the Center for North American Studies at Duke, hosted the workshop, "Becoming Better Partners: Mexico, Canada and the United States" for teachers in North Carolina. Over fifty teachers attended and received a 220 pages resource guide, which included the new slide presentation, "From Tenochtitlán to Taco Bell."

Extractions: Science House Conference: National Reach, Local Focus What can a university scientist do to support public education? That was the question under the microscope at a national conference sponsored by the college's Science House. Scientists, educators, and administrators from each of North Carolina's university campuses, as well as those from Alabama to California gathered in Raleigh February 10-12, 2000, to take part in discussions around science education in the public schools. Participants exchanged ideas and learned about the college's success in giving school districts access to high-tech programs that make science fun, interesting and relevant. "We gathered people who were associated with successful programs addressing K-12 science education," says conference organizer and Physics Professor David Haase. "We wanted to create a forum in which we could review and evaluate existing outreach projects, share new ideas, and begin to build collaborations among university science departments inside the state and around the country." Conference speakers included Dr. Donald Mitchell, Juniata College Science Outreach Project, Pennsylvania; Ms. Diane Burnett, Purdue University Science Outreach, Indiana; Dr. Ramon Lopez, Department of Physics, University of Texas at El Paso; Dr. Paul Helminger, the Alabama Science Outreach Project, University of South Alabama; Dr. Elnora Harcombe, Rice University Model Teaching Laboratory Project, Texas; Dr. Charles Coble, Vice President for University-School Programs, UNC General Administration; and Mr. Jose Franco, EQUALS, Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California-Berkeley.
