Private schools have clearly played a role in the racial segregation of students in grades K-12 during the past 40 years, especially in the South, a new Duke University study shows. A second study indicates an increase in segregation in all levels of North Carolina public schools between 1994-95 and 2000-01. It also raises concerns about between-school and within-school segregation segregation that occurs in different classrooms of the same school. Both studies were conducted by faculty at Duke's Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy.

That's a 9.1 percent increase in student achievement since the ABCs of Education testing program began; then, 60 percent of students were proficient. It was the third year the State Board of Education (SBE) has released school-by-school performance results of all elementary schools and the second round of year-end test results from high school students. Results showed that 1,167 or 58.4 percent of elementary schools exceeded expected student achievement growth/gain. Overall, 81.2 percent of the schools met or surpassed expected academic achievement standards. In 1997-98, 83.9 percent of the K-8 schools and 83 percent of high schools did that well. For K-12 schools, 22.9 percent or 457 schools made expected growth/gain in 1998-99. Another 354 schools received no recognition. The number of low-performing schools dropped from 30 to 13, 6 of which are charter schools. School performance in The ABCs model is reported in a number of ways for K-12 schools: expected growth/gain in student achievement, exemplary growth/gain for schools that exceed expected growth/gain by an amount specified by the SBE, and no recognition for schools with more than 50 percent of their students at Achievement Level III but who do not achieve expected growth/gain.
NECC: North Carolina School Makes Palms Mandatory NECC north carolina school makes Palms mandatory by Dennis Sellers, dsellers@maccentral away$2.3 million in technology grants to US k12 schools and colleges http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0106/26.ncpalm.shtml
Extractions: June 25, 2001, 7:00 am ET Palm may be giving away $2.3 million in technology grants to US K-12 schools and colleges, but the company may make some serious money with the announcement that an independent school system outside of Winston-Salem, NC, became the first K-12 school in the U.S. to require the use of Palm handhelds in its high school and to pilot their use among students as young as first grade. The school system is Forsyth Country Day School . The announcement was made at this week's National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in Chicago. Assistant Headmaster Eric Peterson said that students returning to school in August will find "something extra" in their registration packets: a Palm IIIc handheld, portable keyboard, and a suite of software applications. "Part of the appeal is the mobility of Palm handhelds, enabled and empowered by wireless technologies built into the product," said Mike Lorion, vice president of education markets at Palm. "This is the first time a K-12 school in the United States has mandated the use of handheld technology in its school and made the commitment to use it in a range of academic and administrative areas." Forsyth Country Day School is working with Palm and third-party developers to choose an appropriate set of software applications to be used by students and faculty across the curriculum. In addition to issuing Palm handhelds to the high school students, classroom sets of Palms will be used in science and math classes in the middle and elementary grades. The school also plans to integrate handhelds into its new science, math and academic support centers.
