In 1998, North Carolina was one of two states in the country to be awarded funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop a Comprehensive Cardiovascular Health (CVH) Program. One of the main priorities of NC's CVH Program is to promote physical activity and healthy nutrition through environmental and policy changes. NC's CVH Program has selected and now funds six Lead CVH Counties (Henderson, Surry, Cabarrus, Wake, Robeson, and Pitt) to implement the CVH Program in their counties and to facilitate similar programs within their regions. Extractions: EXTENSION HORSE HUSBANDRY PROGRAMS Introduction The number of horses in North Carolina has increased dramatically from a low of 61,000 reported in 1955 to an estimated 255,000 in 1993. The indus try annually generates an estimated $500 million of revenue from training, showing, boarding and breed ing establishments, in addition to agri-business sales of horse related products. Extension Horse Husbandry conducts an ongoing 4-H youth and adult educational program through county extension agents and horse commodity groups. Active 4-H and adult educational programs are offered in 87 of 100 North Carolina counties. Adult Programs Adult horse owners annually receive management and training information through a series of county conferences, statewide short courses and clinics, newsletters, extension bulletins and agent/specialist consultation services. Educational conferences continue to be popular methods of providing nutrition, breeding, business management, facility, waste management health care, selection and training information. In 1993, 7,676 horse producers attended 66 conferences held throughout the state for a total of 37,347 student contact hours ( Table 1 ). An average of 116 horse owners attended each educational session. Although the number of sessions offered in 1993 decreased by 28%, (66 vs 92) total attendance in creased by 20% (7,676 vs. 6.414) as compared to 1992.
