These service providers offer information and technical assistance, often free of charge, on issues ranging from equity to technology to special education. Desegregation Assistance Centers provide technical assistance, information and staff development to school districts dealing with a variety of educational equity issues, especially race, gender and national origin issues. DACs help districts develop and implement plans to end physical segregation of students between and within schools; develop and implement comprehensive plans to assure equal educational opportunity for students of color and students with limited English proficiency; and to identify and correct practices that discriminate between boys and girls of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This area includes the states of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The state with the largest number of job announcements was Minnesota with 21 openings and Illinois was second with 17. Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana had 4 openings each. Academic opportunities accounted for 51 percent of the openings, public libraries were second with 29 percent, special libraries represented 11 percent and school and non-library librarians made up the remaining 10 percent with 5 percent each. All of the academic, public, and school positions required a masters of library science degree with from 1-10 years experience. Openings in the special and non-library settings required only a bachelors degree generally in a field appropriate to the subject for the library law, medical, manufacturing, research and development.
