Extractions: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is known for its impartial data collection and research. The data that the USGS gathers, interprets, and presents enable resource planners and others to make informed decisions on the basis of objective information. Today's issues related to earth resources and natural hazards are more pressing than ever, and the USGS continues to address these issues in cooperation with State, local, and Federal agencies, universities, and other public organizations. The State of Hawaii consists of 132 islands, shoals, and reefs. The major Hawaiian islands are the volcanically derived mountain ranges of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai. Elsewhere in the Pacific, the USGS works in the Territories of Guam and American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republics of the Marshall Islands and of Palau (the last three named are all in compact of free association with the United States). The USGS, in cooperation with local, State, and Federal agencies collects streamflow, ground-water level, water-quality, water-use, and rainfall data at sites throughout the State of Hawaii and on all Pacific islands where the United States has an interest (

Hawaii District Office - USGS Water Resources collects hydrologic information and studies waterresource the islands of the Stateof Hawaii the Commonwealth of the northern mariana islands, the Territories http://wwwdhihnl.wr.usgs.gov/office/
Extractions: Office Locations Employee Search The U.S. Geological Survey, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, serves the Nation by providing reliable and impartial scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life. The USGS has the principal responsibility within the Federal government for providing hydrologic information and for appraising the Nation's water resources. The Hawaii District collects hydrologic information and studies water-resource issues in support of the USGS mission. The District carries out these activities to promote the wise management of water resources and address hydrologic hazards from flooding and drought. We believe that the unbiased scientific information provided by the USGS contributes to better resource allocation and public planning decisions. The District is part of the Western Region of the USGS, and has responsibility for water-resource issues in the islands of the State of Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Territories of Guam and American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. The main office of the District is in Honolulu. Field offices are located on Kauai, Maui, Hawaii, and Saipan. USGS personnel in this area operate stations that collect information on streamflow, suspended sediment, lake and reservoir stage, ground-water level and salinity, rainfall, and evapotranspiration. The District also carries out interpretive studies on the quantity and quality of surface and ground water. Work in the Hawaii District is funded by several cooperating agencies, as well as by federal funds.

Extractions: The Golden Gate Biosphere Reserve (GGBR) is made up of thirteen separate units managed by nine separate agencies or organizations including three federal, one state, two county, two university and one private and extends in the central California coastal region from the Bodega Marine Reserve of the University of California, Davis in the north to the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve of Stanford University in the south. Seaward it extends out from the shore approximately thirty miles to the edge of the Continental Shelf and includes the Farallon Islands. Within San Francisco Bay it includes Angel Island and Alcatraz. The total area of the GGBR is 83,000 hectares and 2,400 square nautical miles. The terrestrial portion of the GGBR is within the Californian biogeographic province, which is considered the forest/scrubland area facing the greatest threat of species extinction in the continental United States due to its tremendous biodiversity and the number of species with restricted habitats (E.O. Wilson, 1992). The marine component of the GGBR represents the Californian-Temperate North Pacific coastal-marine province. The GGBR encompasses the complete spectrum of marine habitats ranging from the intertidal to the deep oceanic, and includes some of the largest and most diverse eastern Pacific populations of seabirds and pinnipeds south of Alaska. Collectively, the units of the GGBR offer protection to a very wide variety of ecosystems.
