Extractions: The year of 1852 was memorable for suffering and hardship endured by the pioneers in their journey across the plains and over the mountains. Cholera broke out among the emigrants, and new graves were made all along the trail. It was in the spring of 1852 that Henry Arnold. Mock started for the west with his family. Henry Mock and his wife Maria Elizabeth were natives of Germany. After coming to America in 1833, they lived for some years in the little town of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Here, on October, 8 was born their son John, the subject of this sketch. When John was six years old the family removed to Platte County, Missouri, where the father purchased a forty-acre farm. In those days the school facilities of Missouri were limited, but limited though they were, John could not take full advantage of them because farm duties took so much of his time. In 1852 the Mock family started on its westward journey and the thirteen-year-old John drove the wagon to which four yoke of oxen were hitched. Occasionally two cows were hitched up with the oxen. Young John handled the animals so well that he succeeded in doing what very few men had accomplished-finishing the trip with the same oxen with which he started.

Extractions: Except for a few rather general and journalistic attempts to show that some Czech and Slovak Americans also worked in professional and cultural fields, there has not been any serious effort to date to evaluate their contributions to American science and technology (la, 1b, 2). This is a completely unplowed field if not a Terra incognita. All evidence seems to indicate that the first visitors from the territory of the former Czechoslovakia (3) in the Western Hemisphere (4) were sent to the New World because of their particular technical or scientific skills. This was the case of the anonymous group of the Jachymov miners who were dispatched prior to 1528 to Little Naples (the present Venezuela) in an effort to establish the silver mines, while in the employ of the banking house of the Welser family (5). When Latin America was opened for missionary work to Bohemian Jesuits (6), in the second half of the 17th century, a good half of the missionaries comprised skilled craftsmen and various professionals, including scientists(7) . The most important among them was Valentin Stansel (1621-1705), a professor of rhetoric and mathematics at Olomouc and Prague. He came to Brazil in 1656 where he was attached to the Jesuit College and Seminary of San Salvador (Bahia) and where he filled the position of Professor of Moral Theology and later Superior. He was also an astronomer of note who made extensive observations, particularly on comets, the results of which he published under the assumed name of Estancel(8).

He is known for his clear, classical prose style and his masterful use of symbol and allegory, both of which influenced his friend and contemporary, Herman Melville. Hawthorne’s fiction often deals with America’s Puritan heritage and explores the themes of sin, guilt, and redemption. "Young Goodman Brown," which was first published in New England Magazine (1835) and later collected in Mosses from an Old Manse (1846), provides a good example of these characteristic emphases. Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) published his first volume of poems at the age of 18. Orphaned early in life, Poe led a peripatetic existence, entering and leaving a series of schools (including West Point), enlisting in the Army, and writing for a series of newspapers and magazines in Richmond, Philadelphia, and New York. He first won a national reputation with the publication of his poem "The Raven" in 1845. Poe thought of himself primarily as a poet, though he is now perhaps better known for tales of horror such as "The Cask of Amontillado," first published in Works (1850). In 1847 Poe was devastated by the death of his cousin and wife, Virginia, whom he had married when she was 13, and to whom he addressed the poem "Annabel Lee." Two years later, Poe, acutely alcoholic, died in Baltimore after a brief illness.

Extractions: Blossfeldt was born in Germany in 1865. His early apprenticeship was at an ironworks, where he developed a responsiveness to curving, attenuated forms. His early art training at the Royal Academy of Decorative Arts in Berlin, from 1881 to 1884, coincided with his first experiments with the relatively new medium of photography. Traveling through Italy, Greece and North Africa, Blossfeldt photographed the plant forms he found growing there in precise detail and often at high magnification. Originally intended as visual models for his own ironwork, they became teaching aids for his classes at his old school in Berlin, where he became a professor in the early 1890's. At this time, many of these striking images existed only as large-format lantern slides.

She graduated from Rockford Female Seminary in 1881, among the first students to take a course of study equivalent to that of men at other institutions. Her father, whom she admired tremendously, died that same year, 1881. Her attempt to attend Woman's Medical College in Pennsylvania ended in failure, probably due to her ill health and her chronic back pain. She toured Europe 1883-5 and then lived in Baltimore 1885-7, but did not figure out what she wanted to do with her education and her skills.

If you have the money, he'll write the song, and it's always a good one. (Irving once remarked that he did not always write 'good', but he always wrote fast.) His songwriting career spans the 1920's to the 1940's. He was the lyricist for the 1924 Broadway musical, 'No, No, Nanette'. The son of Morris and Sofia Selinger Caesar, Irving was born on the 4th of July, in the Henry Street Settlement on New York's lower East Side of Manhattan.
