Extractions: Children's Songs Children's songs are in great demand and make up perhaps the largest corner of the folk music market. But there's a lot of syrupy schlock out there which is about as good for kids' minds as soda pop is for their teeth - including songs about brushing their teeth. Historically, good economic times make the middle class sentimental about children. They are all cute little angels - except for the occasional monster. During these periods, children's charities experience a big boom while the larger social and economic causes of their plight get ignored. Children's entertainment takes on a Martha Stewart mentality - insulating fantasies and lessons for good living. There was a big boom in "children's culture" during the flush Victorian Age, for instance, both here and in England. Mark Twain, one of the few to keep his head, excoriated writers who used literature to moralize at kids and to instruct them about everything from manners and geography. This only succeeded in creating bad literature and making children hate it. On the other hand, some of our most cherished children's writers came from the same period: Twain here, Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear in England. The Brothers Grimm were rediscovered about this time too, and the Child Ballads were collected by - who else - Child. Coincidence?

TOP TEN JOINTS OF 1999 : Y'know, while going over all of the songs that came out in 1999, I've come to one conclusion: Hip Hop '99 really sucked. Well, maybe not sucked- I guess there were a lot of songs that I liked this past year. Just not many that I LOVED. You know, the type of joint that you hear on the radio for the first time and just go into a damn coma... you can't move, can't speak, a long string of saliva dangles from your bottom lip as your jaw hangs down below your belly button... then you finally snap out of it and yell "oh SHIT!!! Extractions: Groovyhead are four seasoned Worcester bluesters. Their vast wealth of experience came together about twelve months ago to form this tight blues outfit. They are, Clive Kennard, guitar and vocals, Rob Scott, guitar and vocals, Paul Atterbury, bass and Chris Howells, drums. After just a few gigs they started work on this their debut, self penned album. They've put a great deal of time, money and effort into Feet First which typifies their blues with a groove style. The work is superbly presented and packaged - extremely professional looking. Opening with 'Too Cool Blues Dude' you instantly get the feel of the band. With the dual guitars working around each other and solid, no fuss bass and drums behind, this is a fairly up-tempo number with an almost funky feel. Track 2 gives you a slow, walkin' blues with, 'You Use Me'. A nice, Robert Cray feel to this one with Clive's voice crying in true Cray style. 'Walkaway' is a longer piece at nearly eight minutes and another slow one featuring some damn good guitar passages. Robs straight guitar vies with Clive's 'chorus' enhanced baby as things get hotter. Nicely faded with a repetitive theme. 'High Class Woman' lifts the feel; it's blues with boogie - a real foot tapper. 'Urban Blues' features Clive's effects enhanced chords over Robs precise picking. Slower and interesting with some tasty chord changes within the middle eight and a fading guitar passage at the end this grows on you. With 'Groovyhead' you get what the title suggests - blues with a groove! The lyrics seem to tell a tale of a hard working blues guitarist struggling for years to make things happen with his 'metal and wood'.
