It is indeed a large and handsome volume, well designed and beautifully-illustrated. I ordered it from Strand Books of New York via the abebooks service. I was amused to read Strand's tag-line 8 miles of books! , which their website backs up with an offer to sell books by the foot . It still worked out cheaper to buy what I assume was a remaindered copy from the US, rather than to order one new from the UK. Now I'm wondering whether I can find a similarly advantageous deal on Alberto Seba's Cabinet of Natural Curiosities , also published by Taschen. I've accumulated a few Taschen publications now. I bought their book on M.C. Escher years ago, and, more recently, their collection of the graphic works of Piranesi. For Christmas, my wife bought me their Masterpieces of Western Art volume as a stocking-filler, and, in the meantime, she picked up

Extractions: I was born on July 6, 1954 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. My father, Bill Cowgill, was stationed in the Army there, a member of the 82nd Airborne. He and my mother, Patricia, were both still teenagers when I made my fortuitous appearance. By fortuitous I mean that I couldn't wait to get to the hospital and was born instead in the front seat of my father's Ford. Waiting is still not my strong suit! We only lived in North Carolina for a short time and then moved to El Paso, TX and finally to Houston, which is where all my relatives are from. Both of my younger sisters, Patti and B.J., were born there, and Houston is where we grew up. In our house on Mayo Avenue, we had a garage with unfinished sheet rock on the inside walls. On one side of the garage was my dad's work bench where he kept all his tools. But the other side was just a big blank wall. My mother divided it into three sections. As soon as my sisters and I could hold crayons, we were allowed to express ourselves on that wall in any color or form that we wished. If you stood back and looked at the wall, it was like a record of my growing up. Down at the bottom was just a lot of scribbling, but as I grew, the drawing took on new and clearer forms. You could tell the drawings that were done when I was happy from the ones I did when I was sad or angry. The garage wall was a perfect place for expression. Once I started actually writing, on paper, I no longer needed the wall. But I still think of it as the place where my earliest writing took place. It was like my first journal, a record of my feelings and experiences.

In the first paragraph, the narrator's recollection of the street names on which her family has lived emphasizes how important the concept of "home" is throughout the story. So too, the reader is introduced to the narrator's family of six, including Mama, Papa, brothers Carlos and Kiki, sister Nenny. Thus, the narrator expresses her dissatisfaction that her parents promise to one day move into a real house was not fulfilled in on Mango Street. The narrator ironically contrasts she and her parents' dream with harsh reality. The dream house would be theirs permanently, and would boast running water, working pipes, real stairs "like the houses on T.V.", a basement and enough washrooms to accommodate the large family. The yard was also worthy of Papa's lottery ticket and Mama's bedtime stories: the traditional white exterior and a big, unfenced yard with trees. What the narrator sees is contrary to everything her parents said; her house is tiny, crumbling, and without a yard.

It could be described as a Nature based religion, whose adherents honour or worship many deities, but both goddesses and gods. There are different paths within contemporary Paganism such as Wicca, Druidry, The Northern Tradition or Shamanism. Some claim to be hereditary Pagans and consider their faith to be the oldest world religion. Primitive mankind they say worshipped the figures of a mother goddess and a hunter god. (Archaeologists have found figures such as the goddess of Willendorf) It is difficult to estimate the number of people who would call themselves Pagan. Estimates vary from (Hutton) to (Hardman) in Britain. The word Pagan is usually thought to have derived from the Latin paganus which simply means a country person or rustic. What it is not. The word Pagan has been used in a negative sense, in both the Bible (heathen) and the Quran. The dictionary is not much better, my Readers Digest version suggested that a Pagan was, "a heathen; one who worships false gods; an idolater." In America especially, the term Neo Pagan is popular, the prefix neo is used to distinguish modern Pagan practice from that of the ancestors. However this term is rarely used in this country and some consider it derogatory.
