I have learned so many things that I will be going into dept with the healing plants. I would love to have a farm that I can have so many of these things, but they are all around us and this just brings the beginning of time when the Native Americans knew so much and kept the whites alive and yet they call them savages??? Go figure. I love the book. My grandaughter is even going to take classes in college to learn more about nature & her bounty.

Product Description
Dartmouth College began life as an Indian school, a pretense that has since been abandoned. Still, the institution has a unique, if complicated, relationship with Native Americans and their history. Beginning with Samson Occom's role as the first "development officer" of the college, Colin G. Calloway tells the entire, complex story of Dartmouth's historical and ongoing relationship with Native Americans. Calloway recounts the struggles and achievements of Indian attendees and the history of Dartmouth alumni's involvements with American Indian affairs. He also covers more recent developments, such as the mascot controversies, the emergence of an active Native American student organization, and the partial fulfillment of a promise deferred. This is a fascinating picture of an elite American institution and its troubled relationship-- at times compassionate, at times conflicted--with Indians and Native American culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good storyteller and a good historian
STRONG recommendation. If you're interested in Dartmouth history or Native history, this is the book to buy. Everything I've read by Colin Galloway has been engaging and rich; he makes history read like a good story. At the same time, he documents scrupulously. For example, he has the name, tribal affiliation, year of arrival, year of departure, and (where available) the story of every Indian student to attend Dartmouth or Moor's Charity School. If you're Cherokee and looking for family members, here's your list of students entering between 1770-1969: James Ward, Jeremiah E. Foreman, DeWitt Clinton Duncan, Albert Barnes, Rollin K. Adair, Walter Howard Luckadoe, Harvey Wirt Courtland Shelton, Cornelius (Ellis) Alberty, Alonzo Mitchell, David Hogan Markham, Simon Ralph Walkingstick, Frell McDonald Owl, & Russell O. Ayers. For Choctaw, here's your list for the same period: Simon B. James, Joseph Pitchlynn Folsom, Charles J. Stewart, Albert Carney, Zachariah T. Carnell, George H. Hughes, and Michael Hanitchak (Choctaw-Chickasaw). ... Read more

A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY:
A CHRONOLOGICAL ACCOUNT OF ITS PLACE ON THE WORLD STAGE.
Native American History is a breakthrough reference guide, the first book of its kind to recognize and explore the rich, unfolding experiences of the indigenous American peoples as they evolved against a global backdrop. This fascinating historical narrative, presented in an illuminating and thought-provoking time-line format, sheds light on such events as:
* The construction of pyramids--not only on the banks of the Nile but also on the banks of the Mississippi
* The development of agriculture in both Mesopotamia and Mexico
* The European discovery of a continent already inhabited by some 50 million people
* The Native American influence on the ideas of the European Renaissance
* The unacknowledged advancements in science and medicine created by the civilizations of the new world
* Western Expansion and its impact on Native American land and traditions
* The key contributions Native Americans brought to the Allied victory of World War II
And much more!
This invaluable history takes an important first step toward a true understanding of the depth, breadth, and scope of a long-neglected aspect of our heritage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chronology of Native American History
If you want to learn about what was going on in the world of Native American Indians this has a timeline that contrasts world history and Native American History. This book is good but I would have liked more detail in the discriptions of the timeline. Perhaps a reference companion to this book be a helpful asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars objective
Judith Nies presents an excellent overview of both native american and european events as they parallel and eventually coincide with one another. Until reading her book, I was unaware of the extent of the brutality of the hispanic history towards the natives of all the areas of the americas; their responsibility for the genocide of millions of natives through a combination of enslavement, warfare and disease, creating a world where the natives preferred to kill their children and commit suicide rather than to continue to live. This is followed by a second tragedy, the establishment of the african slave trade to replace what they destroyed.Perhaps what is most effective in her writing is the objective and factual presentation of a complete history, free of personal or cultural bias.Recommended reading for anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars great referrence book
like the title says, it's a great referrence book for those who wish for a brief overview of native history in the present-day united states as well as much of mesoamerica. good starting off point for further investigation.the great thing about the book is that it not only is a chronology ofnative events (which appear on the right side of a page), it also displaysmany significant events throughout the world (which appear on the left sideof a page) so the reader may gain a greater perspective. also includesshort articles thrown in for good measure and to expand a bit on topicssuch as the iroquois influence on the u.s. constitution, to tenochtitlan(present-day mexico city, site of ancient aztec capital), as well as briefintroductions to certain time periods. not a thorough examination, but anice listing of significant events in native history.recommendednonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Educational Book on Native Americans
Many Americans have some Indian Ancestry. We need a book such as this to give us an accurate view of history, and recognize the accomplishments and the tragedies of the Native Americans.Judith Nies did the world a greatservice by documenting these events in an easy to follow format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading
This book should be required reading, at least for any member of the government who has dealings with Native Americans, if not for every American History class in the country. It is a bit dry stylistically, whichis all that keeps it from five stars, but it contains an amazing wealth ofinformation that balances out the general viewpoint of American history asit is taught in public schools. It should be considered an invaluable assetin any attempt to present a balanced perspective on our country's history.Ignoring the criminally dishonorable way in which those of European descenthave treated the Natives will NOT make it go away, nor even lessen thekarmic debt. Only by learning about and acknowledging the truth can we evenBEGIN to decide what steps need to be taken now and in the future. ... Read more

While many photographs of Indians from the turn of the twentieth century pandered to insensitive stereotypes, those made by Frank A. Rinehart conveyed the dignity and pride of Native peoples. This book features one hundred outstanding images printed from Rinehart's original negatives and also includes 14 essays by modern Native American writers, artists, and educators--some of them descendants of the individuals photographed--reflecting on the place of these images in their heritage. Just as this collection offers today's Native Americans a unique connection to the past, this book offers all readers a positive understanding of continuity and endurance within the American Indian community. ... Beyond the Reach of Time and Change: Native American Reflections on the Frank A. Rinehart Photograph Collection features one hundred photographic portraits taken during the very late nineteenth century by professional Frank A. Rinehart. Rinehart practiced his trade upon Native Americans in their traditional dress during the an event known as the Indian Congress; his landmark photography, which unlike that of others did not pander to shameless stereotypes, rests in the Haskell Indian Nations University today and is widely regarded as one of the best photographic documentaries of the era. In addition to the powerful black-and-white photographs of individuals and groups from a wide variety of native tribes, Beyond the Reach of Time and Change features 14 essays by modern Native American writers, artists and educators - including some descendants of the individuals photographed - offering various reflections upon the role of these timeless images in their heritage. 5-0 out of 5 stars Important Window into the Past
The Grandfathers Speak: Native American Folk Tales of the Lenape People is a marvelous small book: it preserves important historical and pre-colonization information about the people who lived in the core of the United States east coast Megalopolis (Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware). The people the Europeans called Indians appear to have lived a relative peaceful life in harmony with nature for thousands of years. The outline of their history is dramatically altered for the worse as Europeans flooded the land. Unlike peoples of Europe and Asia the pressures of population growth were apparently not as great; therefore the stimulus for competitive technological development was apparently less.Advances in weapons, agriculture and medicine occurred at a much slower rate, nevertheless the Neolithic culture outlined in this book was much more advanced and civilized in many ways then it is portrayed in popular media (especially in mid-twentieth century).

I was surprised to learn details of the history of the Lenape people I had never learned of before: my eyes were opened to many more negative effects brought about by the arrival of the colonists. The Grandfathers Speak: Native American Folk Tales of the Lenape People has become an epiphany for me and has lead me to acquire and read several more books about theLenape people such as:

William Penn and the Founding of Pennsylvania: A Documentary History, 1683 by Albert Cook Myers

The Indians of New Jersey: Dickon Among the Lenapes by M. R. Harrington and Clarence Ellsworth (Illustrator)

I highly recommend this book to be included in a list of supplemental reading for students of American History.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
This is an excellent resource for persons who are interested in the Lenape (Delaware) Indian people. The stories are clear and have the use of the Lenape language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
My husband is one quarter Lenape and three quarters German. He grew up hearing a few stories from his Grandmother but she didn't know a lot of her own people's history. He's always been interested in knowing more about his heritage. We moved to New Jersey, near the Raritan River and imagine our suprise when we realized that he'd moved very near to one of the places his people once lived in. I got him this book for Christmas and we LOVED it. We read about Rainbow Crow and Nanapush. He read to me every night in bed, the stories of his people. We found much to be sad over but much more to be joyful for. Whenever we see a Crow now, we smile and we look at eacother. This is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in the history and stories of the Lenape People. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a Wonderful Book
if you are interested in the native american culture this is an excellent resource. I loved this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirits of the Earth
This book has been inspirational for me personally on many occasions, but I would like to share a story in which it seemed to touch others:

While attending this years Rainbow Gathering in the Allegany National Forest in PA I had a wonderfully synchronistic experience.I was cooking breakfast at my van one morning and happen to meet two men by the names Michael and Hummingbird who were at their vehicles at the same time.Hummingbird went to help someone push out their vehicle, and in the meantime a woman stopped to wait to walk with the two men.As they were waiting, I overheard the woman talking about native american ceremonies that she had participated in.Out of curiosity, I asked her about them, so they came over and talked.I decided to take the opportunity to share my interests, including talking about this book.Michael was curious, so I showed him the book.A couple minutes later, Hummingbird returned, so Michael read the Hummingbird section. As he was reading the story, he stopped reading in disbelief when the setting of the story was at Thunder Rock in the Allegany State Forest in NY (Very near where we were standing)!

This book is a wonderful reference book - outlined in a very user friendly manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirits Of The Earth
This is a great book and is an easy read for children and adults alike. It is very entertaining and provides some useful information about the Native American culture and their spirit guides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of Native American spiritual info
If one is interested in finding out about their personal "spirit totems", this is the book to buy! Unlike other books of this sort, this one is well-organized, well-written and the information is presented with dignity.(Other books I've bought tried to make the various totems too "mystic", and the information was skimpy.)

The author has included a very comprehensive list of animal totems accompanied by excellent explanations. The symbols, stories and ceremonies are presented in a straight-forward manner without the "tackiness" I've found in other books of this kind.

I highly recommend this book.

Product Description
This well-researched book provides details of the varied steps that certain groups of Native Americans have used to express their dance ideas--from skips, jumps, and hop steps, to an Indian form of the pas de bourrée. Similarities to Oriental dances, classical ballet, Spanish and Russian variants, and steps in other dance forms are also considered. Examples are given of Indian dance music, words, and descriptive sounds that accompany this music, and the choreography of certain typical Indian dances of the Southwest. Authentic illustrations by a Native American artist depict dancers, while outline figures characterize steps and postures. An inportant addition to the libraries of anthropologists and students of Native American culture, this classic will be invaluable to ethnomusicologists and choreographers. Unabridged republication of American Indian Dance Steps, originally published by A. D. Barnes and Company, Incorporated, New York, 1931. Native American Crafts and Skills: A Fully Illustrated Guide to Wilderness Living and Survival

An excellent resource for learning crafts and skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good But Not Great
There are a number of useful details in this book, but also some details that are inauthentic, or stereotypically over generalized. For example, the tee pee instructions are for using canvas fabric, not hides. Also, most (but not all) of the items explained are for plains Indians / tribes only, and at that, only from latter periods. If you want to learn the skills of native peoples on the east coast during the 15 and 1600's, say, then this isn't the book (C. Keith Wilbur's books are EXCELLENT fornative New England technologies). You'll find some useful informatin in that case, but not much. There is some information on foods eaten, including plant I.D. drawings, but the drawings leave A LOT to be desired. For example, the drawing of "Indian potatoes" is way off from what the plant actually looks like. You could not go out in the woods and pick out an "Indian potatoe" plant based on that picture alone.Neither is there information on where any of the plants grow wild. There is a short list of what natural ingredients would have been used for what ailments - a nice little start. The information on how to make clay pots for real end use (cooking) is far from enough to experience good success.Nothing is said, either, about where to get natural pottery clay, how to prepare it, and what precautions to take when "firing" it.The instructions given on clay pot making also are limited to the pots made in the southwest. One well done section is that on natural brain tanning of hides. There is enough information there to have good success. The section on making a bow is 95% complete - you can do it if you already know what sinew is, and where to take it off of a dead animal (and what kind of dead animals). No weaving instructions (exept for the under-gird of a hut shell). There is a nice map of where various tribes were located across the US, however no dates or information specifying if this is reservation sites, locations of origin, or a mixture of both.I give this book a four star because there are not enough books like this out there, and therefore we should be glad to have even this much documented for future generations. To round out what this work lacks I would recommend adding David Wescott's Primitive Technology books to your library of native how-to titles (and don't forget to check out C. Keith Wilbur's books).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great skills to learn!
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (6/06)

I was particularly interested in reviewing this book to further my knowledge on my husband's Cherokee ancestors and their roots in crafts. I was amazed how detailed this book is and found some interesting information.

Growing up in Northern Canada I often found arrow heads and remnants of tools on our family farm. Montgomery explains how these items are made and I now appreciate the painstaking time and labor it took to make just one tool.

Montgomery not only explains the construction but he gives dimensions and step-by-step instructions for each item.He not only details tools and weapons, but shelters, including a Tipi. He also covers hunting and trapping, tanning, clothing, cooking, transportation, and jewelry, including bead and quill work.

After perusing Montgomery's book I have a heightened appreciate for the crafts that the Native American people continue to preserve. "Native American Crafts & Skills" is certainly a "101" book for anyone that wants to learn any native crafts.

This book contains some very useful information and "how to's" on researching and creating/re-creating Native American beading projects.
The illustrations are first rate and it is well written.
A "must have" for someone that is considering delving into the world of Native American beading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Beaded Work
If you love American Indian beadwork, here's a good book for you. There are chapters on the history of beadwork in America, researching native American beadwork and collecting it.
Other chapters cover lane-stitch beadwork, loom beadwork, applique beadwork, gourd stitch and Comanche brick stitch, uncommon beadwork techniques, beaded edgings and finishing techniques, and patterns. He actually shows how to make different looms (tension loom, box loom, and heddle loom).
I can't vouch for the patterns and ease of following the directions, as my interest was in the historic beadwork.Simply beautiful!
There's a chapter on tools, materials and buying beads.
The color photos show projects and also antique beaded pieces from museums and collections. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What is this past-tense crap?
The book is couched entirely in how we supposedly 'were'.As if we do not still connect with our Holy Mother the Earth as we always have - & always will do.As if the Traditional Ways are no longer practiced & there are no more authentic Traditional people. What a crock of crap!We still do these things. There are still authentic Traditional people. And there isn't nearly enough material in it, either.Kent Nerburn, this is not your best work. This Sun Dancer with a most public prayer will be charitable & give it a "c".

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom beyond words
This book made me wish I had paid more attention to the teaching of both my grand-mother and mother. The wisdom of the Native Americans are far beyond what we can many times put into words. This book help to bring back many of the conversations that my grand-mother and mother had with me when I was growning up. I so wished I had paid more attention to their first hand teachings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Transaction

Product Description
This book shows that it is necessary to understand intergenerational trauma and internalized oppression in order to understand Native Americans today. It makes Native American ways of conceptualizing the world available to readers.

This book presents a theoretical discussion of problems and issues encountered in the Native American community from a perspective that accepts Native knowledge as legitimate. Native American cosmology and metaphor are used extensively in order to deal with specific problems such as alcoholism, suicide, family, and community problems. The authors discuss what it means to present material from the perspective of a people who have legitimate ways of knowing and conceptualizing reality and show that it is imperative to understand intergenerational trauma and internalized oppression in order to understand the issues facing Native Americans today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time
It's about time someone spent a little time sharing the realities of Inter-generational Trauma and Inter-generational Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. I am of mixed heritage - European and Native American, and I can tell you that trauma is most definitely handed down generation to generation. And it is not just a Native American thing. Any ethnicity that lives but several generations from extreme cultural and societal tragedy can face these issues. Jews and African Americans can be added to this list, and could benefit from this man's approach. Thank you for sharing this work with the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent condition and excellent delivery
This is an easy read text, organized well for quick reference and very helpful in counseling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ground breaking book on understanding issues related to Native Americans
Excellent book, those written more recently have different agenda, but this book was excellent in terms of creating a way to understand issues specific to Native people and counseling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into Systemic-Abuse Trauma
It's been many years since the first time I read this book, it was, and remains, a very powerful and very relevant analysis of anger turned inward in the Native American community. It is, nevertheless, a work that confronts a very sensitive issue in the United States of America - the impact on current generations of genocidal colonization practices against long-established Native American communities by European colonizers. Do not read this book if you believe the Americas were pristine, unpopulated lands waiting to be "discovered" by Columbus, or Erikson, or any other European. Do read this book if you want to understand why other colonized cultures have turned to violence and dogma to seek revenge for the foreign imposition of arbitrary and intentionally destructive rulerships.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book for ALL counselors and therapists
This is one of the best books that I have ever read. I see it as basic material for any counselor or therapist. While the focus is on Native Americans, it is relevant for work with clients of all cultures. The discussion of intergenerational trauma and the soul wound is particularly well done.Highly readable and it can change the way you practice. Profound! ... Read more

I purchased this book for my grandsons to learn about the culture and religions of Native Americans. At first they were so-so about this. Now, when I visit, they can't wait to tell me what they have learned.I don't know the historical accuracy of the book, all i know is it has generated a respect for and an interest in the children to learn more about our Native Americans.Mission accomplished!

5-0 out of 5 stars Native Americans Today: Resources and Activities for Educators, Gr 4-8
I really like this book, i use it in conjunction with a variety of other material to teach about Native Americans.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Informative Guide for Native and Non-Native Educators
As both an instructor of adult learners and one of the interviewees in the work (who faced many stereotypical situations growing up in New Jersey...there are Cherokees in New Jersey?!! Amazing!), I can say that a book like this should be mandatory in the school systems of America.Without it, teachers proliferate the same unintentional prejudices they have, and kids receive that and pass it on as adults.

The book was clearly laid out, with seemingly much thought into how the information could be displayed in an informative and easy to understand fashion. As an educator, I rely on such layouts to make classes easier to design, and I appreciate the work the authors did in making my job of teaching adults how to teach to diverse groups a little easier.

To Yvonne and Arlene... wado! (thanks in Cherokee)

Donada!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Native American parent is pleased
I am a Cherokee New Yorker (Nuyagi Tsalagi) who volunteered for ten years working with the Native American Education Program for New York City as a member of the Parent's Committee. It was during this time that I metYvonne Beamer and the other dedicated men and women who worked so hard toidentify and help Native American children in the city.It was humbling tounderstand that every time we identified a new child for our program wefound a damaged child, one who had been hurt by the mistaken stereotypesperpetuated in the larger population of the city.A large part of ourstruggle as an institution was to get appropriate information in the handsof teachers so they could be accurate and informative when they augmentedtheir lessons with Native American materials. After too long, Yvonne andArlene Hirschfelder have put together a book with many activities andresources for teachers grade 4-8 to use in their classrooms. The materialis appropriate sociologically and pedagogically and fills a gaping void forteachers. It was always our experience that once we talked to teachers andshowed them materials to use in their classrooms all their students becomebetter, not simply the Native Americans in their midst. There is a deephunger for accurate, relevant information about Native Americans in theyouth of today. This book is a giant first step at feeding that hunger.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear labor of love!
Native Americans Today is a sensitive comprehensive and imaginative education activity book that helps teachers and students dispel stereotypes and explore diverse realities of modern Native Americans. This book worksnicely with multi-cultural studies and Native American studies formiddleschoolers.Lessons are divided into 8 chapters/categories:Ground Rules, Where We Live, Growing Up, Growing Old, å Day In the Life,Communications, Arts (Walk In Beauty), Economics, and The StruggleContinues. Each lesson is carefully organized and clearly presented withgrade level materials, time, objectives, activities, andenrichment/extensions plus reading and resources. The lessons on NativeAmerican terminology and stereotyping are particularly good.Field tripsto the community and crafts and research projects flesh out the classroomdiscussion exercises.Students learn to define respect as well as racism. One of my favorite sections is the chapter on Indians inCareers/employment under Paying the Bills/Economics.There are 32biographical sketches of Native American individuals and their employmentalong with black and white photos.Careers range from teaching/research,social work, casino poker dealer, computer instructor, and bank presidentto massage therapist, aeronautical engineer, repatriation director andosteopathic physician. The objective is that students will learn NativeAmericans are employed in many vocations and locations, become familiar withcredentials required for certain careers, and use mapping skills. Another interesting lesson is Burial Ground Desecration and Repatriation. Students read "No Peace For Indian Burial Grounds" and discussrelated issues. An energetic approach encompasses many ideas andstimulates the students. Also useful are the appendices on web sites,Native News Radio Stations, and other resources. As a teaching guideand multicultural studies resource, Native Americans Today is a richresource, carefully and authentically created. But it is more than justeffective. It is a clear labor of love.

5-0 out of 5 stars There may be Native Americans in your neighborhood!
As a teacher concerned with intercultural realations, I was so excited to find a book that would finally tell the truth about Indians. They exist today and are involved in all kinds of things from Tai Chi to engineering. As a social studies teacher, I am relieved to finally have a book thatgives an accurate picture of Indians with easy activities that I can usewith any age.Although this book is a teaching guide, grades 4 - 8, it canbe used with all ages and in a variety of subjects from sports to scienceto career exploration to current events. Not only does this book celebrateIndian culture, but it compares similiarities with other groups, findingthe strength in all.

There are web sites, resources on books, films, curriculum units in the appendices and at the end of each chapter. All ofthe chapter titles are interesting and witty like "Where We Live"which includes a brief history of how Indians were moved about and mapexercises on identifying where Indians live today.Another chapter is"Paying the Bills" which has photos and mini-biographies onIndians in a variety of professions and activities on tribal businesses. Students can learn what is offensive to Indian people and what problemsconfront them today in "The STruggle Continues." Art projects, writing projects and even games for the classroom are all in here! This isa fantastic book!Every classroom needs it! ... Read more
