Product Description
Romantic Indians considers the views that Britons, colonists, and North American Indians took of each other during a period in which these people were in a closer and more fateful relationship than ever before or since. It is, therefore, also a book about exploration, empire, and the forms of writing that exploration and empire gave rise to--in particular the form we have come to call Romanticism. Among the authors discussed are Wordsworth, Hemans, Coleridge, and the Native Americans Copway, Tanner, and Norton. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars perceptive and useful
"Romantic Indians" is a perceptive and useful critical text. Native Americans, as noble, savage, uncanny figures, were of considerable importance to writers such as Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey, yet this aspect of British Romantic literary culture has been rarely discussed. Tim Fulford does so with subtlety and intelligence, reavealing the complex cultural feedback whereby travel accounts of Indians were used by British writers, whose fictions were then recycled back to the frontier. The analysis of Southey's "Indian Songs" and his epic "Madoc" are especially welcome, as Southey has received little critical attention hitherto. The discussion of Native American writers in the third section of the book covers indigenous literary responses to Anglo-American discourses by writers such as Edward Norton/Teyoninhokarawen, William Apess, George Copway/Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh etc, and forms a useful supplement to discussions by, e.g., Helen Carr. ... Product Description

Joseph Nicolar’s The Life and Traditions of the Red Man tells the story of his people from the first moments of creation to the earliest arrivals and eventual settlement of Europeans. Self-published by Nicolar in 1893, this is one of the few sustained narratives in English composed by a member of an Eastern Algonquian-speaking people during the nineteenth century. At a time when Native Americans’ ability to exist as Natives was imperiled, Nicolar wrote his book in an urgent effort to pass on Penobscot cultural heritage to subsequent generations of the tribe and to reclaim Native Americans’ right to self-representation. This extraordinary work weaves together stories of Penobscot history, precontact material culture, feats of shamanism, and ancient prophecies about the coming of the white man. An elder of the Penobscot Nation in Maine and the grandson of the Penobscots’ most famous shaman-leader, Old John Neptune, Nicolar brought to his task a wealth of traditional knowledge.

The Life and Traditions of the Red Man has not been widely available until now, largely because Nicolar passed away just a few months after the printing of the book was completed, and shortly afterwards most of the few hundred copies that had been printed were lost in a fire. This new edition has been prepared with the assistance of Nicolar’s descendants and members of the Penobscot Nation. It includes a summary history of the tribe; an introduction that illuminates the book’s narrative strategies, the aims of its author, and its key themes; and annotations providing historical context and explaining unfamiliar words and phrases. The book also contains a preface by Nicolar’s grandson, Charles Norman Shay, and an afterword by Bonnie D. Newsom, former Director of the Penobscot Nation’s Department of Cultural and Historic Preservation. The Life and Traditions of the Red Man is a remarkable narrative of Native American culture, spirituality, and literary daring.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR NATIVE AMERICANS AND ALL AMERICANS
With a touching and eloquent preface by the last living grandson of Joseph Nicolar, of the Penobscot tribe, whose original text dates from the 1890s, and with a brilliant and comprehensive introduction by the author, Annette Kolodny, this work will be a classic for anyone wanting to understand Native Americans. And not just that. The work and its introduction give us the deepest possible sense of alternative approaches to land, tradition, animals and humans, including a prophecy that white men will destroy themselves, essentially by destroying the environment. No one should miss this extraordinary book!

Product Description
An old Indian woman comforts two young white children she finds lost in the woods and lovingly carries them back to their eager parents. A frontiersman sheds tears over the grave of a Mohican youth, holding hands with the mourning father.According to Laura L. Mielke, such emotionally charged scenes between whites and Indians paradoxically flourished in American literature from 1820 to 1850, a time when the United States government developed and applied a policy of Indian removal. Although these "moving encounters," as Mielke terms them, often promoted the possibility of mutual sympathy between Native Americans and Euro-Americans, they also suggested that these emotional links were inherently unstable, potentially dangerous, and ultimately doomed. At the same time, the emphasis on Indian-white sympathy provided an opportunity for Indians and non-Native activists to voice an alternative to removal and acculturation, turning the language of a sentimental U.S. culture against its own imperial impulse.Mielke details not only how such writers as James Fenimore Cooper and Henry Rowe Schoolcraft forecast the inevitable demise of Indian-white sympathy, but also how authors like Lydia Maria Child and William Apess insisted that a language of feeling could be used to create shared community or defend American Indian sovereignty. In this way, "Moving Encounters" sheds new light on a wide range of texts concerning the "Indian Question" by emphasizing their engagement with popular sentimental forms and by challenging the commonly held belief that all Euro-American expressions of sympathy for American Indians in this period were fundamentally insincere. While portraits of Indian-white sympathy often prompted cynical rejoinders from parodists, many never lost faith in the power of emotion to overcome the greed and prejudice fueling the dispossession of American Indians. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars just what the field needs
This a careful, detailed, judicious study of the question of sympathy in antebellum US literature, as it relates to writing about Native Americans. While not ignoring the issue of complicity, "Moving Encounters" refreshingly does not dismiss all white writing about Native Americans as cynical or duplicitous, in the manner of much standard poco literary criticism. The chapters on Thoreau and Fuller, on Catlin and the Schoolcrafts, and on "Indian" melodramas are especially interesting.

Not a light read - the endnotes alone are a book in themselves - but just what the field needs. ... Read more
