Product Description
This revealing work introduces readers to the mythologies of Native Americans from the United States to the Arctic Circle-a rich, complex, and diverse body of lore, which remains less widely known than mythologies of other peoples and places.
In thematic chapters and encyclopedia-style entries, Handbook of Native American Mythology examines the characters and deities, rituals, sacred locations and objects, concepts, and stories that define mythological cultures of various indigenous peoples. By tracing the traditions as far back as possible and following their evolution from generation to generation, Handbook of Native American Mythology offers a unique perspective on Native American history, culture, and values. It also shows how central these traditions are to contemporary Native American life, including the continuing struggle for land rights, economic parity, and repatriation of cultural property.
With more than 40 photographs, illustrations, and maps, here is the most comprehensive and accessible introduction to the mythological heritage of Native North Americans available in one volume. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Text Book, not Good Story Book
If you are looking for text book that outlines native american mythology and categorizes it by region, this is the book for you.A word of caution though, it is extremely wordy and overly scholarly. It almost seems like the author had a thesaurus next him.Honestly, it took 30 pages before it I had to put it down or fall asleep.I never would have guessed that stories passed down through oral tradition could be worded so dull! The stories are outlines, with little to no background, and the author does nothing to put them into perspective. But again, if you are looking for a text book that outlines the mythologies and categorizes them by region or ethnicity, this is the book for you.
Unfortunately I bought this one thinking I was going to get the stories and how they related to the times and the people.I was obviously disappointed in that regard. If you are looking for a book that focuses on the stories and people, American Indian Myths and Legends by Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library is a little more up the alley. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Anyone interested in mythology and legends will enjoy these stories which have been passed down orally for generations by the Pueblo Indians of the American Southwest. They reveal Pueblo customs and traditions as well as the ceremonial aspects of Pueblo religion. A character called Grandfather, the fictional narrator of these stories, embodies the collective wisdom of the Pueblo Indians, the attitudes about universal dilemmas and conflicts in human life that developed through many generations. Some of the stories are realistic; others involve the supernatural. Some evoke the initial contact between the pueblos and the Spanish conquistadors. There are also tales of the joy and bitterness of interactions between parents and children, husbands and wives, and humans and spirits. Rites of passage and 'vision quests' often enter into the characters' attempts to live in harmony with nature, other humans, and spirits. Lessons on how to live, of growing up, marrying, parenting, and growing old sometimes emerge straightforwardly in these stories, but more often, readers are left to draw their own conclusions. These stories, collected by the Teresa Pijoan since she was eight years old, actually came from many different storytellers, some of them childhood friends of the author. She had heard several versions of each story before writing it down and she often used elements from one version to fill in the parts missing from other versions. She then showed her drafts of each story to members of several different pueblos and weighed their comments before putting each story in its present form. ... Read more

Excerpt: Red Horn is a culture hero in Siouan oral traditions, specifically of the Ioway and Hock (Winnebago) nations. Only in Hock literature is he known as "Red Horn" (Heucka), but among the Ioway and Hocgara both, he is known by one of his variant names, "He Who Wears (Man) Faces on His Ears". This name derives from the living faces on his earlobes (Hock), or earbobs that come to life when he places them on his ears (Ioway). Elsewhere, he is given yet another name, "Red Man" (Wkucka), on account of the fact that his entire body is red from head to toe. Red Horn was one of the five sons of Earthmaker whom the Creator fashioned with his own hands and sent to earth to rescue mankind. 5-0 out of 5 stars a Wonderful Book
if you are interested in the native american culture this is an excellent resource. I loved this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirits of the Earth
This book has been inspirational for me personally on many occasions, but I would like to share a story in which it seemed to touch others:

While attending this years Rainbow Gathering in the Allegany National Forest in PA I had a wonderfully synchronistic experience.I was cooking breakfast at my van one morning and happen to meet two men by the names Michael and Hummingbird who were at their vehicles at the same time.Hummingbird went to help someone push out their vehicle, and in the meantime a woman stopped to wait to walk with the two men.As they were waiting, I overheard the woman talking about native american ceremonies that she had participated in.Out of curiosity, I asked her about them, so they came over and talked.I decided to take the opportunity to share my interests, including talking about this book.Michael was curious, so I showed him the book.A couple minutes later, Hummingbird returned, so Michael read the Hummingbird section. As he was reading the story, he stopped reading in disbelief when the setting of the story was at Thunder Rock in the Allegany State Forest in NY (Very near where we were standing)!

This book is a wonderful reference book - outlined in a very user friendly manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirits Of The Earth
This is a great book and is an easy read for children and adults alike. It is very entertaining and provides some useful information about the Native American culture and their spirit guides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of Native American spiritual info
If one is interested in finding out about their personal "spirit totems", this is the book to buy! Unlike other books of this sort, this one is well-organized, well-written and the information is presented with dignity.(Other books I've bought tried to make the various totems too "mystic", and the information was skimpy.)

The author has included a very comprehensive list of animal totems accompanied by excellent explanations. The symbols, stories and ceremonies are presented in a straight-forward manner without the "tackiness" I've found in other books of this kind.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desirable
This book was sent to a young family member whose recent guidance and help from a group of Native Americans has helped in his healing. Before he read it one of the "Natives" asked to borrow it!Need I say more?? ... Read more
