4-0 out of 5 stars SEALs in full color...
The Europa Militaria "US Navy SEALs in color photographs" is exactly what is claims to be... it is a wonderful full color record of modern Navy Special Warfare. While the text is very limited, the detail and quality of the close-up images speaks volumes.Of particular interest is the amount of space dedicated to gear and weaponry... military modeling buffs and miniature collectors will find it quite useful (at least I do).

Like many of the titles in this series, it is well worth adding to any collection on military uniforms. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars US Navy Phantom Colours and Markings
This essentially a good book but there are no coloured diagrams of the aircraft or units mentioned, only photographs and many of the photographs are monochrome and as such defeat the object of the excercise.

Having said that there is some good anecdotal information and interesting aircraft histories but if you're looking to this book for specific coulour references to complete colour schemes, unless you have some prior knowledge you are unlikely to find all you are looking for here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photo-Survey of Atlantic Fleet F-4 Paint Schemes!
Detail & Scale maestro Bert Kinzey surveys the markings carried by Atlantic Fleet Phantoms and other F-4 units in this 1990 Airlife Publishing release. Like other D&S publications, it boasts crisp, concise text and scads of great b&w and color photographs.

Kinzey's book is subtitled 'Atlantic Coast Markings' as it includes not only regular Atlantic Fleet F-4 squadrons but also several units temporarily assigned to LantFlt carriers plus east coast test and evaluation units, the Blue Angels, etc. In all, some 22 units are covered with 200+ shots of Phantoms from VF-11, -74, -101, -171, -201, VAQ-33 and so on. The color photos are especially interesting since many depict F-4s in their glory days before aircraft colors and markings were dulled down.

In short, COLOR & MARKINGS OF U.S. NAVY F-4 PHANTOMS, PART 1, ATLANTIC COAST MARKINGS is a visual treat for all fighter buffs. Phantom Phreaks will especially enjoy it. Recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
A variety of cross-cultural collisions and collusions—sometimes amusing, sometimes tragic, but always complex—resulted from the U.S. Navy’s introduction of Western health and sanitation practices to Guam’s native population. In Colonial Dis-Ease, Anne Perez Hattori examines early twentieth-century U.S. military colonialism through the lens of Western medicine and its cultural impact on the Chamorro people. In four case studies, Hattori considers the histories of Chamorro leprosy patients exiled to Culion Leper Colony in the Philippines, hookworm programs for children, the regulation of native midwives and nurses, and the creation and operation of the Susana Hospital for women and children.

Changes to Guam’s traditional systems of health and hygiene placed demands not only on Chamorro bodies, but also on their cultural values, social relationships, political controls, and economic expectations. Hattori effectively demonstrates that the new health projects signified more than a benevolent interest in hygiene and the philanthropic sharing of medical knowledge. Rather the navy’s health care regime in Guam was an important vehicle through which U.S. colonial power and moral authority over Chamorros was introduced and entrenched. Medical experts, navy doctors, and health care workers asserted their scientific knowledge as well as their administrative might and in the process became active participants in the colonization of Guam. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Navy Floatplanes in Action!
Although labelling a Kingfisher or Seagull a "fighter" is a real stretch of the imagination, author Jerry Scutts does a good job of summarizing the wartime exploits of the U.S. Navy's floatplanes in his FANTAIL FIGHTERS book, published by Phalanx Publishing in 1995.

Navy battleships, cruisers and even a few destroyers operated a variety of biplane and monoplane observation aircraft during WWII. They mainly served as gunfire spotters for their parent ship but also flew recce missions, rescued downed fliers, etc. Some floatplanes also operated from land bases. Several were credited with assisting in U-boat kills; one even downed a Zero in February 1945!

Author Scutts does a nice job of describing the various Vought, Curtiss and Grumman floatplane models and the varied roles performed by those hardy if unglamorous warbirds. He includes a number of reminiscences by pilots and aircrew EMs that gives the reader a flavor of floatplane flying.

The book features over 50 photographs of SOCs, Ducks, Seagulls, Seahawks and Kingfishers along with various warships and two nicely done color profiles by John Valo.

In summary, FANTAIL FIGHTERS is a nicely done, well-written and well-illustrated summary of some little-known Navy warbirds. Jerry Scutts and Phalanx deserve a Bravo Zulu for bringing the history of these aerial workhorses to light. Recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
The Korean War was a watershed in the 20th century history of the United States Navy. During that conflict and for the next fifty years, U.S. naval forces conducted operations that maintained control of the world's oceans and brought sea power to bear against enemies ashore. Freed by friendly control of the sea from the threat of hostile fleets, American carrier squadrons, shore bombardment ships, and amphibious units engaged North Korean and Chinese Communist forces on the Korean peninsula. Navy and Marine Corps aviation units executed the majority of UN close air support missions in the war, shot down numerous Communist MIG aircraft, and disrupted the enemy's resupply and reinforcement efforts. Fleet amphibious forces turned the tide of battle in 1950 at Inchon and threatened the enemy's vulnerable coastal flanks for the rest of the war. The Seventh Fleet ensured that American ground forces got the men and supplies they needed to fight and win far from American shores. The Korean War experience helped the Navy fight more effectively during the later conflict in Southeast Asia and elsewhere.

No work published to date contains as much detail on U.S. naval operations during the conflict. Based on a wealth of primary source material, including previously classified action reports, staff studies, official correspondence, message traffic, and personal observations, the Field book should be the starting point for anyone wishing to investigate the naval conduct of the Korean War. ... Product Description
It will be recalled that the United States entered the World War after Germany's declaration of unrestricted submarine warfare. In reaching this momentous decision of ruthless warfare at sea, it is not to be supposed that Germany failed to take into account the effect of probable participation of the United States on the side of the Allies. As the result of careful calculations, the German high command firmly believed that their submarines could not only prevent the large scale transportation of American troops across the Atlantic, but furthermore could also cut the sea communications of her European enemies to such an extent as to actually force them to an early surrender through lack of supplies from overseas.

Read in this book how the US Navy participation in World War I evolved from this point up to the final stage of the war. ... Read more
