5-0 out of 5 stars A History Lover's Masterpiece!
Harry Beahr, Jr. and Christopher Price have accomplished something special with this writing. They have documented the birth of the oak-hulled U.S. Sailing Navy with text-book accuracy, while never losing sight of the compelling human drama that the heartiest of sailing souls endured. From the first words, "Body O' me! It's a little city!", the reader begins a nautical journey - as rough as it is elegant - within the expansive bowels of these wooden masterpieces. If you are a reacreational sailor you should have this book aboard if, for nothing else, the detailed (30 page) glossary of sailing terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Spectacular!
If you, or someone you care about is a sailing afficianado - or a sea-lover of any kind - The Old Navy must be in their collection. It goes far beyond the history of the oak-hulled U.S. Sailing Navy, it speaks to the very heart of the sailor. It reminds us that young men (and today - women) are still lured by the dreams and adventures offered by world travel over open seas.. though such travel is rarely easy or comfortable. It is also a fantastic snap shot of nautical history - drawing attention to terms and conditions that have endured and remain a part of the modern sailors' vernacular. A great read on a quiet night in the harbour. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bluejackets Manual - A Ex-Sailor's Review

In 1940 the United States Navy was an antiquated collection of well-built ships and slow but durable aircraft. These two features were to save countless lives in battle with an at-the-time superior foe ie; the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Never short on guts, the average 1940 Sailor was not prepared for W.W.II but how quickly things change.Five short years later we were the most powerful fleet EVER.

While the 1940 edition of the "BJM" differs greatly from the one I was issued in 1994, the core values of "Honor, Committment & Courage" have never changed.Pride isn't specifically listed but it's there nonetheless.

The "BJM" is a fascinating book for all the practical sailing knowledge it carries. It should be on every yacht owner's bookshelf.Tying knots, heaving lines, rules of the road (sea), etc.Plus it's just plain interesting to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly prepared, even more poorly executed
for a casual aircraft fan, mistakes can be tolerated or overlooked... but for a datafile where correct details are needed and expected, this book completely fails the grade. Sadly this is a trend that is present across the entire"modeller's datafile" series. Aircraft are quite often mislabelled, parts mislabelled, descriptions misleading or all together wrong.

I do not know who Andy Evans is, but I DO know who SAM publications is and I expected much better. Unless you want the book for the pictures (and there are many nice ones to be found), I cannot reccomend this book (or any other in the series) for anyone looking for accurate details on the F-4 Phantom.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing reference
A quick thumbing-through raised my hopes. The volume appears well organized, with plenty of well printed photos on nice, glossy paper. After the first impression, the volume is a serious disappointment, especially for a book at this price point.

The writing comes across as sloppy and unambitious. Some of the labels used are just inaccurate. The narratives for detail photos are less descriptive than they could be, even though ample white space exists for much more detail. Many photos use museum pieces as their subjects, however none make mention of details that were never present on operational specimens, such as "L" brackets attached to prevent stabilator movement on an outdoor display.

Similarly, items such as safety locks are in shots without mention to the reader what they are, or that they would be removed for operation.

Sloppiness appears to be an issue for the publisher as well as the author. In at least one case, the same photo is printed in two adjacent spaces on a page, with one caption making it clear that another photo was intended. No fewer than 5 pages boast a large heading of "RF-4J Walkaround", although there was never such a machine. It appears that the error might have been due to a haphazard modification of the "RF-4B Walkaround" heading. The subjects on those pages are, in fact, F-4Js.

A number of pages from technical manuals are included.A good idea, poorly executed, as many of them are simply rendered too small. While they'd have been great on a full page, as a quarter-page image, they are almost pointless, except to give a good first impression.

Key details like cockpits, control surfaces, landing gear and equipment bays are given only cursory attention, while many pages are devoted to full-plane profile photos that are done better in other books.

The book purports to be aimed at modelers, however comes up far short for a market as detail-oriented as serious builders. The old Detail and Scale series would be superior to this book if only all photos were in color and the kit reviews were updated. For that matter, most modelers will be better served by those old D&S volumes if they are willing to do a bit of online research on colors and modern kit reviews.

Sorry to say, this book misses the mark.Badly. ... Read more

Product Description
Designed originally as a carrier-borne interceptor armed only with missiles, its beginnings were so promising that the USAF adopted it as a tactical fighter ands was quickly followed by an impressive number of other air forces around the world which explains why certain examples are still in service today. The evolution of the Phantom goes back to the summer of 1953 when McDonnel gave one of his engineer teams the task of modernizing one of its earlier creations: the F3H Demon. In July 1959, the F4H-1 was officially christened Phantom II as a tribute to the McDonnelL FH-1, the first American jet plane designed in 1953 and intended for carrier-borne from the outset. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY --INACCURATE
SAVE YOUR MONEY!!

It never ceases to amaze me how many reviews for books rate them as 5-stars, without qualification other than how pretty their pictures and drawings are.In this case, one reviewer went so far as to say the illustrations were "accurate to perfection."Come again??? I looked at this book in a bookstore and was astonished to find that the author has many, many errors regarding something as basic as being able to distinguish earlierF-4B/J models from their later, rebuilt versions known as the F-4N and F-4S.Look at the upper intakes shoulders for the semi-tubular fairing of the AN/ALQ-126 ECM antennae on the F-4N and F-4S, which are NOT present on the F-4B or F-4J.It is a key ID recognition feature for a breakout of the various models. To be perfectly blunt, if one does not know this, there is no business writing a book about Navy/USMC Phantoms, or reviewing same. The author did mention these antennae in his text but this brings me to the other issue of proofing and editing:one reference for the AN/ALQ-126 is mistyped as ALAQ-126, a designation that simply doesn't exist. Reject this and any other book that makes such basic errors and shows that the publishers do not demand proper fact-checking, proofing or editing.Too many "junk" books like this are on the market and essentially rip off those who don't know the subject matter well.Readers have a reasonable expectation that published books are accurate, but there is increasing evidence that publishers only care about cranking out volume and don't care a whit about accuracy. Authors and publishers who engage in this kind of incompetence should be avoided.

I would also recommend that unless a publishers allows a close look at the contents of their books, they should be avoided with suspicion and I call upon Amazon to insist that they either make examples available--with legible text--or Amazon won't carry them. This would avoid a lot of the problems. In this case, yes, you do get to see some samples of the pretty illustrations but the text is illegible. When I first saw the book, I was anxious to have a look.As an aircraft historian, author and a weapons systems maintainer of F-4D/RF-4C Phantoms, and an imagery interpreter on RF-4C imagery,I really looked forward to the book.Within just a few minutes, that same experience had me angered and disgusted. The book went back on the shelf and, if it is any indication of what this publisher puts out, I will never consider another of their products in the future.

As for the other reviewers, please take a look at the contents of this book and consider revising your high 5-star ratings. The book does not deserve such praise. It is visually attractive but it has absolutely no credibility.A 5-star rating also damages the credibility of those who rate it so highly.

Frankly, I am stunned that anybody who knows anything about the Phantom would praise this book, and I suspect that it has not been condemned by more people simply because true Phabulous Phantom 'Aphicionados' have not taken a look.If they had, they would be appalled at how wrong this book is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phantastic and colorful
This French publisher continues to put out worthwhile books, and this is the first of a multi-part series on the Phabulous Phantom. As with earlier volumes in this series, this is primarily a book of color side-view drawings.A brief 4-page synopsis describes the original development of the F-4 and a description of each of the navy variants, followed by 2 pages describing the aircraft's camouflage and markings in general terms. The rest of the book covers all the squadrons in numerical order, each squadron getting one or two pages of coverage, providing a brief history of the squadron's use of the F-4 and a picture of the squadron badge, along with from 3 to 7 side views of squadron Phantoms in a variety of color variations.Although these are primarily left-side views, there are a few top and bottom views to show certain variations.Special navy squadrons such as the VC and VX squadrons are covered, followed by the Marine Corps VMFA squadrons, as well as Marine reconnaissance squadrons flying RF-4Bs.About the only negative comment has to do with a few errors in translation and proofreading, often a weakness of H&C books.Even with all that has already been written about the F-4, I think all Phantomphiles will want a copy of this book in their collection of references.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best titles in an excellent series--or any series, period!!
Histoire & Collections (French publishers, who sometimes favor us with titles in English as with this one) have outdone themselves with Gerard Paloque's McDonnell F-4 Phantom Volume 1: US Navy and US Marine Corps. This book is filled with well over 100 stunning (and accurate to perfection) full color side-view and occasional four-view drawings of Phantoms of every Navy and Marine squadron ever to fly this classic fighter, of which more than 5,000 were built. There is worthwhile and informative text about the various units and their respective histories.

But it is the artwork which steals the day!Rarely has such a monograph been offered the enthusiast, although the regular citizenry can certainly appreciate it too.Just the schemes showing this plane in its Bicentennial Celebration (1976) colors from different squadrons is worth its "at a steal price."Also depicts every model and form the Naval/Marine F-4 flew in.Many of the color schemes were gorgeous, if that's the right term for a warplane.

Don't pass this up! I look forward to what I hope will be two more volumes -- US Air Force (not nearly as colorful as the Navy/Marine ones)and non-US Phantoms.ENJOY!!!! ... Read more

Product Description
Although designed in the mid-1930s and in squadron service several years prior to the Pearl Harbor attack, the PBY Catalina proved its soundness in combat throughout the four years that the World War 2 raged across the Pacific. Deadly in its primary role as a submarine hunter, the PBY was the scourge of the Imperial Japanese Navy's submarine force. Its amphibious traits also made the aircraft well suited to air-sea rescue, and thousands of Allied airmen were saved from a watery grave by PBY crews.

Using personal interviews, war diaries and combat reports combined with original Japanese records and books, Louis B Dorny provides a view on the role of the Catalina from both sides of the war. Illustrated with over 80 photographs and color profiles detailing aircraft markings, this is the definitive history of and insight into the PBY's use by the US Navy and Allied forces in the Pacific during World War 2. ... Illustrations superb, bios of the aces good, campaign coverage adequate but not as informative as they could have been, but no information about the planes , their design, history andqualities or problems. I would not have bought it if i'd known.

4-0 out of 5 stars US Navy PBY Pacific Review
The book is a good overall account of the PBY in the Pacific War of WWII against Japan. It also has accounts of production and reconnosance work done before and after the war.

5-0 out of 5 stars A more balance view
I really like Lou's book because it does a good job of covering all the many operations and actions the PBY units in the Pacific were in.I especially like the early operations coverage of the PBY (Patrol Wing Ten in the Philippine/DEI and the Aleutians). He has managed to do this all in less than 100 pages.Much new information and photos are included with excellent PBY profiles and art work on the cover. All in all this is a great companion to Ragnar's book on the Atlantic operations.Good job Lou!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cats Prowl the Pacific!
Osprey Publishing wraps up its two-volume history of the PBY in World War with Louis Dorny's take on Catalina ops in the Pacific, #62 in their 'Combat Aircraft' series.

Consolidated's lumbering patrol bomber saw just as much action if not moreso in the PTO than their ETO counterparts. The Catalina was THE main patrol aircraft during WWII as well as the primary air-sea-rescue bird. It notched up many historic milestones in the Pacific including first USN aircraft to engage Japanese air units, first aircraft to fire on Japanese forces, first USN aircraft to down a Zero, discoverer of the Japanese fleet at Midway, etc. Whether flying in the god-awful Aleutians or over the trackless Pacific Ocean the PBY was a major player.

Given the broad canvas he has to cover, Dorny does a fairly good job of covering the action. He includes a great deal of information on squadron movements, etc. and, to be honest, I would have preferred a few more combat reports and less on adminstrative matters.

The PBY's story is illustrated with 100 black & white photographs and 11 pages of color profiles.

An interesting look at a rarely chronicled warbird!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comes packed with statistics and history.
Louis B. Dorny's US NAVY PBY CATALINA UNITS OF THE PACIFIC WAR is the second of two volumes (the other being Ragnor Ragnarsson's US NAVY PBY CATALINA UNITS OF THE ATLANTIC WAR): each volume packs in vintage black and white photos, history, and close-up shots of the planes and each comes packed with statistics and history. ... Product Description
With this publication, the Center for The Study of Professional Military Ethics inaugurates its "Occasional Paper" series, and we are genuinely proud to have Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale as the first author we publish. Indeed, we could have had no finer or more appropriate person with whom to launch this new Center program.

A 1947 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Vice Admiral Stockdale is a figure of enormous. stature among midshipmen more than a half century later, as a living embodiment of the Navy's core values-Honor, Courage, and Commitment. In late 1999, the Center hosted Admiral and Mrs. Stockdale for
several days, including one major event-"Moral Courage: An Evening in Honor of Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale." Early in 2001, the Naval Academy Alumni Association announced that Admiral Stockdale had been selected to receive the Association's Distinguished Graduate Award. This prestigious
award is given to a living graduate who has demonstrated a strong interest in supporting the Navy and the Naval Academy, has provided a lifetime of service to the nation, and has made significant contributions to the nation through public service. .
A long-time student and teacher of philosophy, whose special focus is on the moral obligations of individuals, especially military officers, Admiral Stockdale asked last year if the Center would be interested in publishing some of his reflections on Stoicism and its influence on his life. We readily and enthusiastically agreed. The result will actually be our first two publications
in this series, which we are calling Stockdale on Stoicism I and Stockdale on Stoicism II. The first, this publication, is a slightly edited version of two lectures Admiral Stockdale gave to the students at the U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia on April 18, 1995.

As you read this man 's biography and his own words to those young Marine officers, you will no doubt conclude, as we have, that he is also the living embodiment of the Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis . ... Read more

Product Description
The first monoplane aircraft ordered by the US Navy for carrier operations, the Douglas TBD Devastator was designed to fulfil a requirement for a new torpedo bomber. Just 129 were built, and when it entered service it was the most modern aircraft of its type anywhere in the world. Its only real taste of action came on 4 June 1942 in the pivotal Battle of Midway, when 35 were shot down in a clash with Japanese A6M Zero fighters. The aircraft was replaced by the Grumman Avenger weeks later. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet.
I've read 3 books that review the history of the TBD in the U.S. Navy, and got the same general feeling from them all: why is this book so short? We're talking about the first monoplane that was ever accepted by the Navy for service, and was a major contributor to pre-war naval aviation's attack doctrine.Further, the sacrifices made by the aircrew who flew the TBD in combat through June 1942 deserves volumes written about them to help us remember what happened.
Barrett Tillman's book is very good, but I feel the subject deserves a larger work.I was impressed with the photos of men like Lem Massey, Gene Lindsey, Art Ely, and etc., but seeing them brought this feeling up in me all the more.
I do recommend Mr. Tillman's book as an excellent effort overall- many people may feel as if my complaints about the shortness of an otherwise fine work is nothing more than a quibble- but I do feel the subject is worthy of the extra effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devastating
This book is a must for anyone interested in the history of aviation during World War 2. The men that operated the TBD Devastators are fine examples of heroes.
