Product Description

In several landmark decisions during the mid-1920s, the U.S. Supreme Court significantly expanded the scope of the Constitution's protection of individual freedom by striking down state laws designed to repress or even destroy private and parochial schools. Forging New Freedoms explains the origins of na-tivistic hostility toward German and Japanese Americans, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, and other groups whose schools became the object of assaults during and shortly after World War I. The book explores the campaigns to restrict foreign language instruction and to require compulsory public education. It also examines the background of Meyer v. Nebraska and Farrington v. Tokushige, in which the Court invalidated laws that restricted the teaching of foreign languages, and Pierce v. Society of Sisters, which nullified an Oregon law that required all children to attend public elementary schools. Drawing upon diverse sources, including popular periodicals, court briefs, and unpublished manuscripts, William G. Ross explains how the Court's decisions commenced the Court's modern role as a guardian of civil liberties. He also traces the constitutional legacy of those decisions, which have provided the foundation for the controversial right of privacy.

Ross's interdisciplinary exploration of the complex interaction among ethnic and religious institutions, nativist groups, public opinion, the legislative process, and judicial decision-making provides fresh insights into both the fragility and the resilience of civil liberties in the United States. While the campaigns to curtail nonpublic education offer a potent reminder of the ever-present dangers of majoritarian tyranny, the refusal of voters and legislators to exact more extreme measures was a tribute to the tolerance of American society. The Court's decisions provided notable examples of how the judiciary can pro-tect embattled minorities who are willing to fight to protect their rights.

"Listen," said Dad.
"What's that?" I asked.
"White water!" he shouted.
"Hang on tight!"

When a father brings his son on a white water rafting trip, he hopes his son will share his love of the river. Inspired by a real life experience, renowned writer and poet Jonathan London and his son Aaron perfectly convey the thrill of speeding over rapids, the joy of seeing wild horses, and the quiet pleasure of falling asleep under a billion stars after a great meal around the campfire. Jill Kastner's lush nature paintings make it clear that this is a trip that father and son won't soon forget-and neither will the reader. ... Read more

I love this book.An adventure between a father and his son.I started using this book after my white water rafting trip. The descriptions and pictures are excellent for children of all ages.Excellent for readers and writers workshops.

5-0 out of 5 stars white water
I read the book White Water. It's about a thirteen year old boy whose name is Greg. His parents have been divorced ever since he was little.

This weekend it was his dad's turn. They went white water rafting. Greg didn't want to go and his mom wasn't going to make him. He ended up going and his step brother came along too. (He does not like his step brother.)

When they arrive at the rafting house, they learn all about rafing. Then they start to go down the river. When they start their trip, everything goes wrong. His dad gets bitten by a rattle snake and almost dies. They also lose the raft.

If you like adventure you should read White Water. There are a lot of twists and turns. It kept me turing the page. Read this book to find out what happens to Greg, James, and their father. ... Read more

With the possible exception of Callie Price, Zoe Stepanovich feels like the only virgin on Earth. The new girl in school, Shawna Frye (from Deep Green), has all these stories about sex, but they only make Zoe more confused. Am I ready for sex and everything that goes with it?

When football star Jamie Allen asks her out and pressures her to sleep with him, Zoe can't help but wonder if now might be the right time. Meanwhile, Nate Stein, a guy Zoe has had something of a secret crush on since middle school, tries to persuade her to think twice before giving herself to Jamie. One night, Shawna hooks up with Jamie and her dark secret comes into light, changing everyone's attitude about sex--especially Zoe's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars why this book inspired me
This book inspired me because it helped understand how to choose my friends and how to deal with teenage life. For example, how to grow up.This book showed our Habit of Mind metacognition because it shows you how to think about your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A novel all teens will relate to
Book three in Melody Carlson's TrueColors series stresses the cultural pressures and potency of peer influence to engage in sexual activity without a second (or initial) thought. Teens will find helpful and pertinent information and encouragement as they read about the pitfalls of succumbing to the lie that "everyone is doing it."

Carlson once again vividly portrays and highlights her protagonist's (Zoë's) emotional journey as this high school teen battles against her conscience while fending off the emotional and physical pulls to go all the way with new boyfriend Justin. Zoë is certain that she is the last virgin in her high school, and it doesn't help when a transfer student, Shawna Frye, arrives with her own sexual history that she seems intent on continuing at Zoë's school.

After Zoë's best friend, Emily, confides that she has become sexually active with her boyfriend Todd, Zoë retreats further and attempts to earnestly figure out a way to define right and wrong regarding sexual behavior. With a school play opening up, rehearsals take Zoë's time and attention, as does Justin and his ever-escalating demand for more physical contact. As is often the case, rumors and accusations fly steady and strong at Zoë's school after she discovers the new girl, Shawna, making out with Todd. Zoë tells Emily the truth, only to be verbally thrashed. More confusion for Zoë on the moral code issue springs forth. To the rescue is another student, Nate Stein, a Christian who helps Zoë sort out her social and spiritual happenings from a Godward perspective.

When push comes to shove, Zoë is forced to make the choice every teen must confront. Will she or won't she give in and join the majority (or so Zoë believes) of her classmates by becoming sexually active? Carlson's descriptions of rainbow parties, underage drinking, and especially her take on current sexual habits is right on the mark. Readers will be challenged to see further than their next "good feeling" and be more prepared to stand for personal integrity after finishing this text. Highly recommended.

My book is called Torch Red. It is about a girl named Zoe, and wants to have sex. She thinks her life is pathetic because she hasn't had sex yet. When a new girl Shawna Frye comes to her school Zoe shows her around. They are both in a play together. Shawna and Zoe's crushes are acting in the play also. Something happens between Zoe and this guy Justin, but to find out what you need to read the book.

I think Zoe and Justin are a good couple but Justin shouldn't
have done what he did. Justin should not get drunk or do things
for Zoe without telling her. Then when they broke up Justin
shouldn't have gone out with one of Zoe's friends.Justin can be sweet but he can also be a jerk. Zoe cared for Justin a lot, but she had to let him go.

4-0 out of 5 stars <3*!Teen Temptation!*<3
This book Torch Red by Melody Carlson is about Zoe being faced with regular teenage temptations! In this book, Zoe is the only virgin out of all of her friends & she hates that fact. She is pressured by her friends to lose her virginity when she starts dating Justin Clark. Despite these temptations, Zoe keeps her virginity, but all of her friends think she has lost it, because she lied to her friends!
I liked this book because I can easily relate to these problems. I have been pressured a time or two to make the wrong decisions. I was like Zoe, I did the right things but I didn't lie about it. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because it was a very good chick book! This is one of the best books I have ever read. Melody Carlson is a great writer!

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful and practical guide to making the most of the summer for your kids
If you're familiar with Kathy Peel's other books and enjoy them, then go ahead and add this one to your list of favorites. In her usual style, Peel uses accessible language, tips-oriented material and a sprinkling of Scripture to help parents, especially mothers, maximize summer's free days and nights.

While she offers hundreds of great ideas for activities and projects kids can take on, I felt the strength of the book was really in the first few chapters, where she helps parents draft a plan focusing on four areas of development to hone skills in over the summer: intellectual, physical, social and spiritual. She also encourages moms and dads to consult their kids to ensure that they're on board as well.

This book is suitable for stay-at-home and working parents. The ideas can be adjusted to any family's needs and schedule. For example, choosing a summer camp is relevant to both types of parents, which is a topic she devotes some pages to.

Another useful chapter is the last, which focuses on how to build a child's character. Although this one is the most Christian-focused, it still offers ideas parents of other faiths can adjust and adapt to their needs. It's also a subject many parents miss as we cart our kids from one activity to another in a quest to make their summer as memorable as possible.

This book is a wonderful addition to the family library and offers parents an easy reference guide to summer fun, while providing a bigger picture often absent in other guides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow I'm glad I got this book
I'm psyched for summer.I'm a SAHM and just read this tonight (I did do a lot of skimming as far as the actual crafts and stuff but read all the introductory text in each section).

I have no idea why someone would say this is geared toward working moms. There is a part in the beginning saying how to ADAPT it to working moms, but most if it deals with what to do with your kids on a day-to-day basis in the summer to help them entertain themselves (and avoid the "I'm bored" monster) along with teaching different values and focusing on different areas of their growth.I actually don't think it would work that great for working moms - did I miss something?!

There is a lot that I skipped over, such as how to help them earn money doing different summer jobs, and with any "list" type book of tips and ideas, there are some I already knew and a lot I probably won't use. However, just the craft part alone is worth the cost of the book. I got it from the library but am on here right now finding a copy to own so I can highlight and dog ear.

There are many many craft ideas that are actually cheap, unlike a lot of craft books and magazines that require you to buy special expensive ingredients and ending up with crafts that the kids can't even make well so the parent ends up taking over. The ingredients in here that look like they might be costly are used over and over again so at least you are not buying a big box of something like Borax or liquid starch and only using a tablespoon. And the crafts seem to be easy enough for the age range of 6-9 that I'm looking for. There are enough crafts that I'm interested in that I actually think it would take several summers to do them all!

I've already enrolled my 9yo and 6yo in a few day and overnight scout-type camps but was looking into some expensive daycamps at the Y and elsewhere (starting at $200 a week for both boys - yikes!) to keep them occupied during the day, since I plan to turn the tv and video games off for the summer. Now I realize I can actually enjoy doing camp-type activities with them without Mom getting too bored, and still have enough time to do the things I, myself, need and want to do this summer.Especially since there are a lot that require planning on my part but that they can implement all by themselves.

BTW, it has definite Christian overtones. If you are not big onChristian literature, as I am not, don't be turned off. It's not preachy and there is plenty here for parents of any religion or even no religion, like me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly geared towards working moms
There were some helpful worksheets and ideas, however, over all it is geared toward the working mom. Also if you homeschool - most of the ideas don't fit but some could be modified.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make the Most of Summer
Sure kids need some time to relax over the summer but quickly become bored. What's a busy parent to do ?
I was delighted to discover this book after reading about in in the Maine Sunday Telegram. The author advises really listening to your children's input on what excites them, but also wants the parent to offer suggestions and set limits.
A child may think watching cartoons non-stop makes a fun summer. This book gives ideas (tennis, hiking, other exercise or structured programs).I highly recommend investigating the free programs at your local public library. They might be able to lure your child into reading for pleasure (or reward).
The book wants you to get resourceful and creative with your children.Learn origami or stamp collecting or take turns with other parents teaching the children new skills.
The author also suggests a designated "pickup time" each day to gather up the toys and do a 10-minute clean up.Great idea!
There are lots of things to do in the summer with children and many are inexpensive.Turn off the TV and turn on your family to having fun together this summer. ... Read more

Honoring and celebrating the immigrant settlers of the American plains, Cather's novel also succeeds as one of the finest romantic stories written in the United States. The story is poetic and historical, semi-autobiographical and "of the earth." My Antonia fills you with a gale of inspiration and pride in the stuff of the American -- and a woman's -- soul.

This concise supplement to Willa Cather's My Antonia helps students understand the overall structure of the novel, actions and motivations of the characters, and the social and cultural perspectives of the author. ... Read more

This book is awful! I am being forced to read it because of school and it is pure torture! HELP! I have not learned anything from it, and men cannot write the way Willa Cather portrays Jim to think! HELP ME! THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!

4-0 out of 5 stars My Antonia
I thought the book had a lot of charm. It showed how much strength mankind had to form this great land. The trusting and helpful ways to each other in order tosurvive. The strength and struggles for freedom: to have a pieceof the American dream. The comforts we take so much for granted are drivenhome, how very spoiled and soft we have become. It also helped me toappreciate our farmers of today they must still face the same challengeswhile we just go to the store in our cars and get what we want.

1-0 out of 5 stars **Warning** Do Not Read This at Night
This book was so awful. I was supposed to read it for one of my classes and I have a quiz on this book today, but I fell asleep.I couldn't help it. That's how boring it was! Nothing interesting happens. I'm about halfwaythrough it as of right now, but I don't think I want to continue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please, It's not that bad
I thought My Antonia was an easy read.It was short, and although it could get a little boring at times and the ending wasn't as great as it could have been, it was entertaining. It's point was to give an account ofnineteenth-century farm life while still being entertaining. It achievesboth. It seems like man of the people critiquing this novel didn'tactually read it.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book is not that good
I think if your gonna write a book it should be decent. This book hardly meets this critia. It goes into too much depth, and has too many "hidden" items that most people don't care about. You can wasteyour time on it if you like to read boring and wanna-be romantic books. ... Read more

Buttons, Bones, and the Organ-Grinder's Monkey:Tales of Historical Archaeology

by Meg Greene

This book follows contemporary archaeologists in five cases of discovery that have reinterpreted history:the excavation of the French explorer La Salle's ship Belle off the coast of Texas; the reconstruction of life in the Jamestown settlement through its original fort; the battle of the Little Bighorn, where Sioux accounts were at odds with the U.S. Army explanation; the excavation of the slave quarters in Jefferson's Monticello; and the diggings in the Foley Courthouse Square, a New York City immigrant neighborhood over 150 years ago.

What the archaeologists made of what they found in the dirt will give kids a fresh and fun way to understand the importance of history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in home schooling
I have used this series with both of my home-schooled elementary school children.I wouldn't rely on it exclusively - but there are many pages that are helpful as workbook pages in a home school curriculum. They give good practice in language arts - building on what came before.I only use these for language arts - can't really judge on the math, etc.But I am happy with them for L.A.

Product Description
LeBron James is a six-foot-eight gift from the basketball heavens. He was the undisputed finest high school player in America. He was the one NBA scouts drooled over, corporations dreamed of, event promoters begged for, and now fans clamor after. Never before had a high school basketball player been so highly touted or an eighteen-year-old athlete been the subject of such fascination. Maybe no basketball player in the world has had that level of attention.
Now with the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron has become a certified NBA all-star. Love him or hate him, there is no denying that LeBron James is a force on the basketball court, and his rags to riches story is the stuff that dreams are made of.
Ryan Jones has updated his smash hit book King James to incorporate everything that is LeBron: the controversy, the star power, the shoes, the cars, the hobnobbing with the world’s most famous celebrities, and, of course, the game. This is a book for every fan of LeBron James and for anybody interested in reading about an NBA legend in the making.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lebron
This book is a very interesting one. The book describes how a young basketball star goes through his career from 8th grade to senior year in high school. The book shows Lebron's stuggles and accomplishments. It explains major deals with shoe companies. The book gives highlights from his most hyped high school games. The book shows all aspects of how Lebron made everyone believe the hype. Overall it was a good book and it is for anyone who loves reading about sports and athletes accomplishments.

4-0 out of 5 stars King James Scores!
Ryan Jones is a great basketball writer. In King James: The LeBron James Story he does a great job of trying to show the reader how amazingly good LeBron James is at basketball.Coach Bob Gibbons said about LeBron's performance in the Olympic trials, "I don't want to blow too much smoke and distort the kid's thinking, but I saw Kobe Bryant in tenth and eleventh grades, and I think this kid is more advanced than Kobe was."Like LeBron, Kobe Bryant was drafted out of high school and has led the Los Angeles Lakers to multiple NBA Championships.
Ryan Jones is editor-in-chief at SLAM, the monthly basketball magazine that combined the sport with hip hop culture at a time when the genre was becoming increasingly popular. The magazine carries advertising for basketball-related products, street-wear clothing and hip hop music, and it has been credited with helping to market hip hop culture and basketball as one.It is only fitting that Ryan Jones wrote his first national magazine feature on LeBron James. He thoroughly explains LeBron's involvement with SLAM magazine throughout the book.He lives in New York with his wife and son.
Although Jones seems a bit repetitive at times, his knowledge of basketball and great style shines though and creates an easy to read biography. In Chaper Four, he talks about the potential LeBron possessed in football as well as basketball: even though "there wasn't much national buzz on LeBron the football player, area football coaches knew better."Jones even compares him to the New England Patriots Pro-Bowl wideout, Randy Moss. While he mainly focuses on LeBron's basketball ability, his information about LeBron's high school football career is refreshing.
With all the hype about LeBron and his constant coverage on ESPN, this book reveals the truth about LeBron and his journey from moving in with his friend's family to his 90 million dollar sneaker deal with Nike. While the vocabulary can be a bit easy at times, the book a joy to read, especially if you are a total sports nut like myself.A stong strength of Jones is to tell the complete story of every little event in Lebron's life. His very descriptive writing explains aspects of basketball that makes this book a good pick for sports lovers and non sports lovers alike.I give this book an eight out of ten and recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall a very good read
This was quite an enjoyable read. I was fascinated by the rise and rise of this basketball prodigy due to all the hype surrounding him. There is no doubt that Lebron James is one hell of a talent after seeing many of his highlight plays on T.V, and on the net. This book details his performances in school for ST Vincent-ST Mary and other events, the frenzied interest from fans and media wanting to see him perform, sport commentators and coaches raving about him being the best thing in the sport of basketball, hummergate, speculation about his future career plans, and the fight for his feet between Adidas and Nike in which the latter won because the former could not offer huge amounts of money in the bidding war with its major rival. Great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winnebago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was a AWESOME book.It really looks into the real life of LEBRON JAMES and shows you his trip into stardom. This book is great if you like watching basketball careers grow because is probably the most popular young basketball players in the world today and this book did a really good job of showing how LEBRON is always improving his game.I have read a ton of sports autiobiographies and this one was probably the most inspiring because it took an indept look at the personal and also basketball part of LEBRON JAMES life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have fun learning about the Revolutionary War!
My daughter and I really liked this book because the main character, Samantha(Sam)Byrd, is an adventurous girl who loves the outdoors and wears boys clothes more often than dresses. The story has lots of action from the very beginning and it moves quickly to tell the story of how Sam, her brothers, and cousin become involved in the American Revolution in Virginia. My daughter is 8 1/2 years old and related to Sam's adventure because it showed that girls could have exciting experiences and show courage and strength.Because of this book, our family recently went to Lexington and Concord to learn more about the revolution! ...
