Product Description
"This is a volume that would be a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone looking for a reliable reference work on Nevada government and politics. It will appeal to anyone seeking to understand those subjects in the context of a turbulent past which, in many ways, is strikingly unique among states of the West and the nation." —Western Historical Quarterly

"In Nevada, as elsewhere, historical and environmental forces have influenced government and politics. Michael W. Bowers’ books succeeds in capturing the dynamics of this process. This concise work explains how Nevada government actually works and how the area’s history has shaped its political culture." —Journal of the West

Since its publication in 1996, The Sagebrush State has served as the text for the required course on Nevada’s history and constitution given at the state’s colleges and universities. The third edition of this work is updated through 2005 to include information on the elections of 2002 and 2004 and two very controversial sessions of the legislature.

The full text of the state constitution is provided for reference in an appendix and includes extensive annotations that note and explain amendments and other changes made to the original 1864 document. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's for a class, so...
The book is fine.I ordered it for a government class I am taking in Nevada, so I would not classify it as a purchase I 'wanted' to make, but it arrived in fine condition, quickly and is exactly what I ordered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Text book for UNLV
I have to agree with the other reviewer as the book is not all together boring but, I would not have chose it on my own accord. I did buy this book for a mandatory class on Nevada history. The author did make the history of Nevada interesting. I am going to keep it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent history of Nevada
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a relative newcomer to Nevada, I was entranced by the history and development of the state from the early 19th century onwards. The descriptions of the impact of silver mining on the life and development of the region surrounding Reno & Carson City were captivating, and provided the impetus for a long drive on I95 from Las Vegas to Reno.

4-0 out of 5 stars School textbook
I bought this book for a mandatory class at college on Nevada Constitution.Although I wouldn't have chosen to read this book on my own, it is not as boring as one would have thought. It is well written and even intriguing at times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chronicles the life and political career of Howard Cannon
Written by former journalist and U.S. Senate aide Michael Vernetti, Senator Howard Cannon of Nevada: A Biography chronicles the life and political career of Howard Cannon, who represented Nevada in the U.S. Senate from 1958 to 1982 and earned a reputation for productivity and influence. A man who believed in the virtue of hard work rather than excessive vanity or self-promotion, Cannon's work on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and the Armed Services Committee brought about sweeping changes in the air travel industry - such as deregulation and increased support for national military preparedness. A handful of black-and-white photographs and information garnered from dozens of interviews with Cannon's associates distinguish this solid biographical account of a respectable American leader.

4-0 out of 5 stars A facinating history of women's suffrage and Nevada politics
Anne Martin's story is of interest to anyone who enjoys reading of history or politics, particularly of Nevada's history, or of women's struggle to gain suffrage rights.Anne Martin grew up in Nevada in the late 1800's and came of age in the early 1900's.She attended Stanford University, and then worked in England, Washington D.C., and throughout Nevada to attain voting rights for women.(Nevada women gained the right to vote in 1914.)After attaining that goal, Ms. Martin ran for Senate, traveling through the rough countryside to various mining camps and small railroad towns -- a daring feat for a women at that time. After abandoning her own political career, she became active in the peace and equal rights movements on a global scale, decades ahead of the 1960's peace movement. This book is somewhat cumbersome to read, since every fact and reference is painstakingly documented in detail, but the effort is worthwhile. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

Nevada’s highly individualistic political culture has produced a conservative political philosophy in an open society. Economic developments resulting from mining and gambling reinforced and heightened the individualistic ethic that many early settlers brought to the frontier state. This ethic is also evident in the opposition of most Nevadans to big government, big labor, and big business. Belief in limited government partially explains the apparent anomaly of the electorate’s backing a pro-choice position on abortion while opposing the Equal Rights Amendment.

The book discusses the important roles played by Nevada’s present U.S. senators in two of the state’s ongoing controversies with the federal government: the longstanding water rights dispute between Native Americans, backed by the federal government, and Nevada’s ranchers; and the decade-long fight against the establishment of the nation’s first permanent nuclear waste depository at Yucca Mountain.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Nevada has always been different from other states. Almost from its
beginning, Nevada sanctioned behaviors considered immoral elsewhere gambling, prize-fighting, brothels, easy divorce and embraced a culture of individualism and disdain for the constraints of more conventional society.
In The Making of Modern Nevada, author Hal Rothman focuses on the factors that shaped the state s original maverick, colonial status and those
that later allowed it to emerge as the new standard of American consumer-
ism and postmodern liberalism. Rothman introduces the masters who sought to own Nevada, from bonanza kings to Mafia mobsters, as well as
the politicians, miners, gamblers, civic and civil-rights leaders, union organ-
izers, and casino corporate moguls who guided the state into prosperity
and national importance. He also analyzes the role of mob and labor union
money in the development of Las Vegas; the Sagebrush Rebellion; the rise
of megaresorts and of Las Vegas as a world icon of leisure and pleasure;
and the political and social impact of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear
waste repository. The Making of Modern Nevada is essential reading for anyone who wonders how the Silver State got this way, and where it may
be going in the twenty-first century. ... Read more

Nevada s Newlands Project, completed in 1915, was the first federally subsidized
water reclamation scheme in the U.S. Water Politics in Northern Nevada examines its construction and its many unintended consequences, including deterioration of water quality, destruction of vital wetlands, interruption of ecosystems, and pollution of waterways and ground water. The project also resulted in decades of litigation involving water allocation and the abatement of environmental, social, and economic problems. This book traces the long course of negotiation between competing users that resulted in the signing of the Truckee River Operating Agreement in 2008. It illustrates the challenges of sharing a scarce resource to meet diverse needs and of preserving the resource and the environment for future generations. ... Read more
