While visiting New Mexico, the author was struck with the opportunity the state presents to explore the school-community relationship in rural, religious, and multiethnic sociocultural settings. In New Mexico, the school-community relationship can be learned within four major culture groups -- Indian, Spanish-American, Mexican, and Anglo. Together, studies of these culture groups form a portrait of schooling in New Mexico, further documenting the range of ways that host communities in our educationally decentralized society use the prerogatives of local control to "create" schools that fit local cultural inclinations.

The first of four planned volumes, this book studies the Pueblo Indians and Indian High School. The school is a nonpublic, state-accredited, off-reservation boarding school for more than 400 Indian students. A large majority of the students are from Pueblo tribes, while others are from Navajo and Apache tribes. As a state-accredited school, it subscribes to curricular, safety, and other requirements of New Mexico. As a nonpublic school devoted to Indian students, it has the prerogative to be as distinctive as the ethnic group it serves.

Murder on the Rez...
In Dulce, Disturbed is a truly original story centered around quirky and fascinating characters searching for truth in the middle of New Mexico Indian country. The main character, Cinnamon, demands our attention and her investigation is peppered by a creative look at unusual subjects -- schizophrenia, civil rights, and murder -- of course. Interestingly, her sidekick, Burro, suffers from hallucinations, which aid the two in their work. And the side story about Cinnamon's search for her mother adds another compelling dimension to the story.

Set in Hillerman country, In Dulce, Disturbed adds modern pizazz and cultural realism to an age old topic. Tower Lowe is brilliant with this fresh, new approach to mystery. More, please!

Mystery lover
I love mysteries set in the southwestern United States, so this was very enjoyable reading for me. The descriptions of the location and characters made me feel like I was in Dulce. I would recommend this story to all mystery lovers. I hope to read the rest of The New Mexico Chronicles by Pecherer. ... Read more

Rio Grande Stories
This book is a great book to read because it provides tons of information on how to cook something, lots of stories that are pasted down from generation to generation, and lots of belief that are followed. It also provides a great plot. The title of the book is "Rio Grande Stories". Carolyn Meyer is the author of the book. The book was published by Gulliver Books in 1994. This book provides a great plot on the different cultures of New Mexico.

The beginning of the book is very important. This is when a class that is attending Rio Grande Middle School learns that they are going to have to find a way to earn some money to use to build a statue in front of the school. They have many ideas but none seem to spark their interests. They finally decide to write a book which they could sell. Each person decides to write a story about their culture to put in the book.

As the students try to figure out what they are going to put in the story, relatives and friends provide ideas. Jeremy's grandfather provided a friend of his that could tell the story of Hidden Jews to Jeremy. Jeremy took the story and changed it to words and put it in the book. Antonio and his father always believed that they had an ancestor by the name of Padre Martinez who was a great hero to everyone who knew him. After hearing many different points of view, Antonio, in his own words, put the story in the book. Pauline went to visit her Aunt Helen who made pots. This provided a great time for Pauline to talk to her aunt about pot making. After hearing about how to make a pot, Pauline published an article in the book about pot making. These are just a few of the many ways the students figured out what to write about.

After finally getting the book finished, the students then published it. They figured out that they could sell some in advance which could provide the money they needed to publish the book. If you paid your money in advance it would cost fifty cents less. They then had a party to commemorate the books publication. They sold many books in advance. After the party, one of the students' uncles provided the class with an idea which could sell a lot of their books. The uncle was an owner of a low rider. He said the student could sell the books out of the trunk of his low rider since many people would probably come to look at the low rider.

If you are a person that likes to read about cultural diversity, then this would be a good book for you to read. It provides tons of information about many different cultures. I think that this book would be a good book for both males and females to read. I would also recommend if you are going to read this book that you enjoy reading about different cultures because that is what this book is focused on. Overall I liked and disliked the book. It was a good story, but it was hard to follow if you didn't know what the author was doing. Every other chapter was the plot. The chapters in between were the final copies of the students' stories they provided for the book.

OUCH!

I am a native of Albuquerque where the book takes place and I was torn between laughing uncontrollably and throwing the book in frustration.It was required reading when I was in seventh grade, but my dislike forthis book comes from far more than the childish resentment you wouldimagine.This book was an extremely clumsy attempt to piece together theessence of the Southwest.The stories were shallow and disjointed into anendless series of pointless, fractured, narratives.The characters aresuperficial and embody only the innocence of a four year old.The kids atRio Grande Middle School(a fictional place) remind me only of the group onthe magic school bus.The reader learns what biscochitos and lowridersare.Then what?Nothing.If you want real Southwest literature,Hillerman is good and Anaya is the greatest.Leave this junk to petulantseventh graders.

heart-warming stories
I first found this book in our local library.Being in love with New Mexico and its people, I decided to try the book even though it was aimed at pre-teens.I LOVED this book!I loved the way the author created a history for each child and then let the child translate part of his/herstory into a fictionalized piece for the class project.The book does notread like traditional fiction; I had to keep checking the jacket to see ifthe class was real or not!I have since purchased this book for some of mydaughter's teachers.All have found it an inspiration for theirclassrooms. Remaining and Becoming: Cultural Crosscurrents in an Hispano School deals with the politics of identity and the concept of boundaries during a time of rapid change. It investigates how the role of schooling for Hispanos in the Norteño School District (a pseudonym) in Northern New Mexico--a public school district, not fully consolidated until 1972--has changed significantly over the past three generations. Today, the Hispanos, a minority in the outside world but a majority in their own, are debating how the functions of the school should respond to the changes resulting from the coming of public education to their region. But the contemporary story of education in Norteño has much deeper roots in the political, religious, and cultural history of Northern New Mexico--a region where, over a period of several centuries, Spain, Mexico, and the United States each have claimed sovereignty, with differing goals for and attitudes about the welfare of the people.

This study is an analysis of the ambiguity of education, the losses and gains that are its consequences, the lingering doubts about the past, and the questions about what future education can and should serve. It is about asking: Is what the students are learning worth as much as what they are forgetting? How does schooling affect the evolving process of asserting, renegotiating, and defending an Hispano identity? By exploring historical factors and ideologies of a particular school within a particular community, Roberts seeks to understand community expectations for the school as a fitting place for its children. The shortage of fresh water is likely to be one of the most pressing issues of the twenty-first century. A UNESCO report predicts that as many as 7 billion people will face shortages of drinking water by 2050. Here, David Lewis Feldman examines river-basin management cases around the world to show how fresh water can be managed to sustain economic development while protecting the environment. He argues that policy makers can employ adaptive management to avoid making decisions that could harm the environment, to recognize and correct mistakes, and to monitor environmental and socioeconomic changes caused by previous policies.

To demonstrate how adaptive management can work, Feldman applies it to the Delaware, Susquehanna, Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint, Sacramento--San Joaquin, and Columbia river basins.
