Product Description
For the Trigianis, cooking has always been a family affair–and the kitchen was the bustling center of their home, where folks gathered around the table for good food, good conversation, and the occasional eruption. Example: Being thrown out of the kitchen because one’s Easter bread kneading technique isn’t up to par. As Adriana says: “When the Trigianis reach out and touch someone, we do it with food.” Like the recipes that have been handed down for generations from mother to daughter and grandmother to granddaughter, the family’s celebrations are also anchored to the life and laughter around the table. We learn how Grandmom Yolanda Trigiani sometimes wrote her recipes in code, or worked from memory, guarding her recipes carefully. And we meet Grandma Lucia Bonicelli, who never raised her voice and believed that when people fight at the dinner table, the food turns to poison in the body.

Adriana Trigiani’s voice springs to life from the first page of Cooking with My Sisters, a collection of beloved family recipes that the Trigianis have been enjoying for generations. But there’s much more here than just the food. Peppered with hilarious family anecdotes, poignant letters, and exquisite color photographs, Cooking with My Sisters draws us into the warm and witty world of the Trigiani clan. Each recipe has a story behind it, and each chapter has tips from different sisters, reflecting the unique personalities of the latest generation of Trigiani women.

Here are mainstay meals, featured in sections such as “The Big Life” and “The Big Wow,” which include the chapters “Pasta, or as We Called It, Maccheroni” and “Food We Hated as Kids but Love to Serve Now.” Accessible to any cook, the recipes range from Chicken and Polenta, Zizi Mary’s Rice Soup, and Gnocchi to favorite desserts like Grandmom’s Buttermilk Cake–and all the delectable dishes are geared toward bringing your family together.

Written with Adriana Trigiani’s trademark humor and verve, this wonderful book will appeal to anyone who values the bonds that food, community, and cultural tradition can provide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories.
A neighbor loaned me this book and I was hooked.I then ordered four copies; one for myself and one for each of my daughters.I wanted them to know what it was like during my childhood. The receipes and the gatherings were almost exactly the same as in the book. Some of the receipes I recall from my mother and my favorite aunt who always did the holiday cooking together. We were never less than 30 people; adults at the dining table (very large) and the children in the kitchen within earshot.A great book not only for the memories but also for the great meals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just like her novels
Just like her novels, this cookbook is interwoven with many family stories.I haven't cooked many of her recipes but the Marinara sauce and lasange recipes are amazing. She is not an author trying to write a cookbook to meet publisher demands, it truly is a work worthy of reading as if it is one of her novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious
Everything with Adriana Trigiani is a wonderful adventure. This book weaves her strong family ties with many delicious recipes that I am looking forward to trying. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bueno!Bravo!
I'm a cookbook aficionado and a family-biography aficionado, so what could be better than to read about the family life behind the creators of this wonderful Italian cookbook?!Not only is the cooking that results from the recipes fun, but the reading is a great deal of fun, like all of Trigiani's books. ... I thought this was a sweet little cookbook. I enjoyed both Ms. Ashley's memories of the Arkansas governors she cooked for and her recipes.Though not typically edgy or gourmet, all the recipes are tried and true, just like my grandmother (Nannie) used to cook. There are recipes in it that I use over and over and have blogged about.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
There are no recipes in this book that are even remotely flavorful or interesting. You cannot find a more ho-hum book. The few recipe we tried were terrible.I think he just made up some recipes. I doubt that he actually tested any of these recipes or he has very strange tastes. Bland is the best thing you can say about the recipes in this book. If you want to throw a few vegetables on a plate with olive oil and some herbs then this is your book but why would you need a book for that?Deborah Madison's books are MUCH better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook Ever
If you have to put a meal on the table every night, you really need this cookbook. Besides being organized by season, every recipe is a main dish. I have tried over 40 recipes in this book and every one is stellar. Definitely my go-to cookbook, and I have dozens of them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
This book is fantastic. We bought it on a recommendation from a friend about two years ago and it quickly became the go-to cookbook in our collection. The recipes are almost all delicious and none are too time consuming. That this became the go-to book for us is fairly amazing in and of itself in that we have 5 Moosewoods, the Joy of Cooking, a Williams Sonoma Veg cookbook (which is also great), and various other excellent books.Yet night after night, we come back to this book.

The organization by season is excellent if you are interested in trying to eat by what is in season.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cookbook I have ever used!
I bought this cookbook because my husband is a vegetarian, so we cook vegetarian meals at home. I hate vegetarian meals that are trying to be meat substitutes, so I was having a hard time finding a good vegetarian cookbook. This book is awesome for anyone who has a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share or shops a lot at farmers' markets because his recipes are organized by seasons. Most of his recipes are easy to make on a weeknight, but he also has meals that are fancier for special occasions. Although I have occasionally found ingredients in his meals that I had trouble finding, I could almost always substitute something I had around. He has great tips in the margins on different cooking methods and tips for picking ingredients. I just love this book-I usually cook 3-4 meals from it every week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gliding toward veggies
I bought this on the recommendation of my daughter. Confronted with one veggie daughter, one semi-veggie granddaughter, many vegetarian friends, and an increasing awareness that my husband and I would welcome to diversity to our meaty life, I read through it and have tried several recipies so far. (I was tempted to pledge thru every recipe and write a blog about it...but I guess that's already been done.) It's a pleasure to read -- lots of tips on handling food, selecting vegetables, pastas, and seasonings, and timing. It is organized around seasons, on the assumption that one should cook (and eat) whatever is most available, locally. The dishes are varied in geographic/ ethic origins. The recipies assume that the cook has an hour in the kitchen -- a nice break from work to enjoy the sensual pleasures being prepared. All the dishes I have prepared so far have been delicious. It has definitely changed my perception of the vegetarian possibilities -- though I think many of them will be very delicious pared with a nice lamb chop or a sausage. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy this variety of cooking. ... Read more

Product Description
Among the rich cast of characters he meets during his year of exploration is Virgile, a young local wine-maker who offers to initiate Patrick into the mysteries of each season's work in the fields and in the cellar. Virgile is passionately committed to perfection, though he operates on a shoestring. At the other extreme is Manu, Patrick's dipsomaniac neighbour, a diehard traditionalist producing a private wine-lake of unspeakable rouge. With Manu as his self-appointed guide, Patrick embarks on a tour of the region's wine makers -- a succession of lively encounters with growers as varied as the wines themselves. Interwoven are digressions into the history of the region and its wine-making, from the earliest plantings by the Greeks and Romans. Meanwhile, the author struggles to deal with his dilapidated inheritance -- an unfamiliar and unpredictable world where the brambles have grown as tall as the olive trees, the water supply has just dried up and there is a ferocious animal under the roof tiles. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wines and wineries - I truly learned a lot!
No, this story is not particulary humorous. The attempt was made, but Peter Mayle he is not.I didn't particularly enjoy the crazy rich lady from the chateau, however, I DID learn enough about the region and its wine to be able to pick out a truly superb bottle off the shelf.I amnot wine-obsessed, in fact I don't drink it anymore, but I did enjoy reading about the tending of vines, the mixing of varietals, and the extremely difficult task of making a good wine.I've read an AWFUL lot of books about France, buying a house to restore in France, landscaping in France, the war in France etc.... and I set aside more than I actually finish.this is one of the good ones, although a bit slow going.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Average
I found this book a little tough going, and really not that funny. It was not nearly as good as "A year in Provence".The charachters are shallow and
predictable, and the book is monotonous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Great
With Bill Bryson-like humor, Patrick Moon intertwines winemaking and history with a rollicking good tale. If you're lucky enough to visit this fabulous wine-producing area of France, Virgile's Vineyard will be even more entertaining. There is a not-so-subtle undercurrent of travel guide to this superbly fun story. Spanning one year, it takes the reader through the winter Mediterranean storms, the summer heat of the South, the drenching rains of spring and the laid-back feel of the area when out of the tourist high season. Moon explores the dubious friendship of his neighbor prone to blatant crop filching, but also a master wine taster in constant search of good free samples. There is a dialogue of local repartee, a love interest (solely, on her side, it seems) who is bent on educating Patrick about the area's past, along with some characters who duck in and out as the story unfolds. If you have any interest in wine or the Languedoc region of France, you really shouldn't miss this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kabobs: 52 Easy Recipes
I recently heard the author, Sally Sampson, being interviewed on "Food Schmooze" by Faith Middleton. Her ingredients sounded just delicious and I couldn't wait to purchase the book.In fact, I bought several copies -- it's my current "special little treat" gift for friends, thank you's, etc.The recipes are simple and full of flavor & variety.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tasty recipes the easy way!
This is a nice little book with some attractive and colourful photographs depicting the recipes.I have tried some of them with very tasty results.Book is recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for every night of the week!
This cookbook is only about 100 pages long so at first you'd think it couldn't possible provide descent meals for every night of the week but it does just that! There are 52 recipes but next time you change out the meat option and it's like a completely new dinner.

There are tips on grillings, tips on skewers, and then a section on necessary kitchen equipment. All the pictures are fantastic photographs, they show the true feel of the dish. Not every recipe has a picture but there are many.

The options are to make the kabobs into salads, or add rice, there are many different international flairs (indian, chinese, etc) so it's like a completely different dish each time; even though the basic premise is a skewer full of meat. There are tofu options as well.

There is a recipe for Asian Shrimp that is too die for. It's very good with nothing more than soy, hoisin, sesame oil, rice vinegar, chili paste and a few other ingredients.Certainly things you'd have on hand in your pantry. You could even use a ziploc baggie and make this a freezer meal and then thaw in the fridge overnight and when you get home put it on some skewers and grill. The picture shows adding broccoli and white rice but you could also serve on a bed of greens for a salad if you'd prefer. The next time around use beef tips with the same ingredients and you'd have another dish.Next time around use pork and so on and so forth.

All the recipes favor fresh herbs over dried but you can substitute dried if that's what you have. Also, there is minimal fat involved as you are grilling rather than frying all the food. And most grilling meals can be completed in under 10 minutes. We've even used our George Foreman with great results.

There is also a recipe for beef with herb butter that is delish. But I could see using swordfish to make this meal and it be just as great. Many of the recipes have a little blurb about where the author first tried the dish or some other little tidbit of information so it's almost like a friend telling you about her experiences.

Hope you will give this cookbook a try. It's great as far as I'm concerned.I'll have to check out her 52 weeks of cookies next! ... Read more

That book changed my life by giving me the grocery lists and menus to coast through weekly cooking.I was cooking every day like normal people do, and I LIKED it!

Coming back as a more developed cook, I purchased 400 Rush Hour Recipes recently and I have to say, I LOVE IT.The recipes are good, easy to prepare with normal ingredients, which is Brook's promise.Another thing that I find helpful is the kid-friendlyness of the menus and the fact that it is an economical way to feed the family with food made at home. The tips and wisdom are also fun and helpful bonuses that add to the book.

If you are looking for more complex, adult oriented foods, I would recommend Leanne Ely's "Saving Dinner" books.Same concepts, different style. Those books along with Brook's Rush Hour books are really great additions to any every day cooking library.

Overall, I highly recommend this book, especially for domestically challenged or new cooks, with children and/or on a budget.GREAT JOB Brook, THANK YOU!!

5-0 out of 5 stars All ingredients are common, easily obtained in any supermarket, and come attached to recipes simple to duplicate
Brook Noel has written fifteen books and has appeared on headline news shows, so if her name sounds familiar, it should...she's a busy CEO with nary a domestic gene to her name, so if she can easily prepare the dishes she features in 400 RUSH HOUR RECIPES, anyone should be able to. All ingredients are common, easily obtained in any supermarket, and come attached to recipes simple to duplicate. They are appealing dishes even finicky kids will eat - and they're main dishes so don't worry about breads and rice filling up half the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gas BBQ's don't exist.
The title tells it all. There are gas grills, but not any gas BBQ's.Good cookbook, but not really helpful to the experienced BBQ'er.More for an amature that feels that a gas grill is all you need to do food right. There are lots of better books on the art of BBQ'n than this. If you know that the difference between a grill and a BBQ, search for better books. If you don't, this book will give you what you need to cook food with a gas grill. My question is, why do you need to cook food on gas outside, when you can do the same inside on a gas stove ...
