Product Description
A the end of the fourteenth century, Norway, having previously been an independent kingdom, became by conquest a province of Denmark and remained so for three centuries. In1814, as part of the fall-out from the Napoleonic wars, the country became a largely independent nation within the monarchy of Sweden. By this time, however, Danish had become the language of government, commerce, and education, as well as of the middle and upper classes. Nationalistic Norwegians sought to reestablish native identity by creating and promulgating a new language based partly on rural dialects and partly on Old Norse. The upper and middle classes sought to retain a form of Norwegian close to Danish that would be intelligible to themselves and to their neighbours in Sweden and Denmark. The controversy has gone on ever since. One result is that the standard dictionaries of Norwegian ignore pronunciation, for no version can be counted as 'received'. Another is that there has been considerable variety and change in Norwegian over the last 180 years, all of which is well documented. In this pioneering account of Norwegian phonology, Gjert Kristoffersen mines the evidence to present an original analysis of the ways in which the sounds and meanings of competing languages change and evolve.

The book is written within the framework of generative phonology, making use of insights derived from Optimality Theory. Its main, and successful, purpose is to present the phonological system of Norwegian clearly and concisely.

Conversational Norwegian includes the first 16 lessons from the Pimsleur Comprehensive Norwegian Level I program. This Conversational program contains 8 hours of interactive audio-only instruction, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.

HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT®

What is the Pimsleur® difference?

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Norwegian structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Norwegian can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.

When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.

With Pimsleur you get:

  • Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
  • Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
  • The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
  • 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.

Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.

Conversational Norwegian includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Norwegian plus an additional 6 lessons.

The 16 lessons in Conversational Norwegian are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Norwegian Level 1. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for learning Norweigan
I'm living in north of Norway right now. Mo i Rana.
I tried taking courses in Norweigan, but the classes moved too slowly for me, so I picked up this book at the local bookstore. My book did not come with the 3 tapes that are supposed to come with it.
However, the book itself is excellent. Mr. Klouman does a good job at the beginning of the book by highlighting some of the commond mistakes non-native norweigans make when trying to learn the language. He also lays out some speaking rules (there are few unfortunately) and etiquette rules.
The chapters are laid out logically and are well-thought out.
My only complaint is that Norway has many, many different dialects. Living in north of Norway as I'm doing now, the dialectic is a bit different from that spoken in Oslo, which is where readers of this book are intended to be learning. But of all the English to Norweigan books I have seen (3) this is by far the best and most comprehensive. Props.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to sound like a native, this book is for you.
I lived in Oslo for almost eight months, and this is the only course that I would recommend for those wanting to sound like a native.A lot of myenthusiasm for the book is based on the three-tape set that goes with thebook but the book stands on it's own merit as well. The pronunciation onthe tape is the best example of Oslo dialect that I have found on cassetteso far.The book has a lot of well-constructed exercises and dialogs thatare useful on their own, without the use of the tapes. The book isgraduated very well, starting with extremely basic dialogs and ending withlong passages about industry, weather, housing conditions and the like.Ifound without exception that every example in the book 1) gave usefulinformation, such as on weather or the housing crunch in Oslo 2) washumorous or 3) was deeply moving, which I found some of the poetry andsongs to be.In fact, if I had to make a second argument for buying thebook it would be that it provides an intimate look inside the heart of theNorwegian psyche. And that is worth the price of the book alone. ... Product Description
Intended primarily to complement Norsk, nordmenn, og Norge, the  most widely used Norwegian text in the United States, this anthology may also be used independently and offers a lively, diverse collection of Norwegian writings for the intermediate-level student of Norwegian.  High schools, universities, or adult classes will find that the various stories and exercises provide a flexible text to meet their differing needs.  Writings by Norwegians for Norwegians are grouped into three sections that allow the student to receive a hands-on approach to bokmal (Norway’s standard language).
The first section provides core readings that gradually grow in length and complexity, including stories, songs, and dramatic sketches on themes ranging from romantic relationships and travel complications to women’s rights and environmental issues.  A second section on cultural background explores Norwegian geography, immigration to the United States, Germany’s World War II occupation of Norway, and contemporary social issues in Norway.  Students will find the third group of writings a useful start to expanding their use of Norwegian:  selected texts are repeated in nynorsk (Norway’s second official language), riksmål (the older form of the language), various Norwegian dialects, Swedish, and Danish, to demonstrate how minor adjustments in reading skills can make a wider range of writings  accessible to the student.
Bound by no single philosophy or teaching method, the anthology allows instructors to use their own approaches, while offering a plethora of specific suggestions for those who desire more structure.  The anthology’s  eclectic character, introductions to selected Norwegian authors, vocabulary lists, and maps provide opportunities for discussing Norwegian history, culture, geography, and literature. Cartoons, jokes, charts, directions, illustrations, maps, and a tourist brochure add variety to the readings.
A companion workbook (Arbeidsbok) and teacher’s guide (Lærerveiledning) are also available.  The workbook provides a comprehensive grammar review and exercises, while also introducing new constructions necessary to comprehend and discuss the anthology’s core selections.  The teacher’s guide suggests a variety of classroom communicative activities for both pairs and small groups. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars lost for words
I visited some friends of mine in Norway about a year ago and got this book before i went . It really was not any help to me though . Most of the words that are in it are out dated and not used in Norway today . I also tried to use this dictionary to translate letters that my friends had sent and it is more confuseing than helpful . Might be ok for someone that speaks Norwegian , but for an English speaker i find to be no real help .

1-0 out of 5 stars lost for words
I visited some friends in Norway a year ago and am planning on returning for a longer stay soon . I got this book before my first visit and it really was not any help . It has few words that i need and most of the words that it does have are out dated and are rarely used in Norway today . Also when i try to translate any letters from my Norwegian friends i find that this dictionary confuses me more than helps . Might be good for someone who knows Norwegian and needs English words , but not very good for english to norsk .

3-0 out of 5 stars Never could find the right word
I took this dictionary on a trip to Norway. It seemed as if every word that we tried to look up was not in the dictionary. From ingredients to road signs we were clueless. We had a lovely trip, but the dictionary was not a help;it's just doesn't have enough words.

5-0 out of 5 stars believe me, this one works
I travelled to Norway in the summer of 2000. Because I am from Copenhagen, Denmark, originally, I knew that anybody there who knew Norwegian would also be able to understand Danish. This is however an awkward situation for both speakers of the languages due to several pronunciation changes, and it can be said jokingly that Norwegians sometimes can't understand Danes. If you are a speaker of Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish, the book probably won't cause much trouble. Even English speakers are surprised on occasion to learn that almost everybody who speaks one of those three languages natively also knows English. But, if you are determined to learn the language, this dictionary will serve as a great source of vocabulary. It would be best for travel, though; students who seek the grammatical aspects of the language should try another dictionary. The words listed are commonly heard, and this book boosts Norwegian vocabulary greatly. There are also sections on food, conversion tables, and short grammar tables, although the latter are not very well explained. For the price, this is a very good selection to choose.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some fundamental problems for English speakers
I've noticed some glitches in the selection of vocabulary, but that's not the main problem for English speakers. It doesn't indicate the gender of the nouns in either the English-Norwegian or the Norwegian-English direction. And you can't speak or write Norwegian unless you know the gender of the nouns. And you can't tell the gender by looking at the word the way you can in Italian. A lesser complaint is that it doesn't mark the tone. Norwegian words have tone. Haugen's dictionary marks the tone. I speak Norwegian, and used this dictionary occasionally, because they have it at the office. I didn't notice that gender was missing for a year until a colleague tried to use it. Wow! No gender! What were they thinking?

1-0 out of 5 stars Substandard
Although I did not buy this book from Amazon.com, I must concur with what the other reviewer has written. Quite frankly, this dictionary is substandard, and not worth the paper it's printed on. It is far too biased towards Norwegian users. If you want to translate from Norwegian to English, you'll get very little help from this dictionary. But that's not all. Many common words and phrases are omitted. Want to know how to say Happy Birthday in Norwegian? You won't find the answer in this dictionary! And as the other reviewer has pointed out, much crucial information about Norwegian words such as the past tense of verbs and gender of nouns has been left out. You're supposed to work that out from the grammar section in the middle. Not good enough!

A good bilingual dictionary should be equally helpful to users in both languages. The dictionaries put out by Collins and Oxford (for e.g. French, German and Spanish) are excellent examples. They are models of what a good language dictionary should be. The "Norsk Ordbok" dictionary falls very far short of that standard indeed. If you're translating from English to Norwegian, it's not too bad (though you might get stuck if your text contains "Happy Birthday" or any number of other common words this dictionary forgets about). But if you're translating from Norwegian to English, then forget it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes to recommend this one
This dictionary has many problems, and I recommend finding another one. For starters, it is clearly aimed at Norwegians needing to know aboutEnglish words. The pronunciations given for headwords are only for theEnglish words (British, at that). If you want to know how to pronouncegjøre, for example, there is no help forthcoming. The definitions have lotsof little clues about which meaning you want to choose, but those hints areof course in Norwegian. Genders of Norwegian nouns, forms of irregularadjectives, past tenses of verbs are nowhere in evidence, not in the word'sarticle nor by cross-reference. (Norwegians already know thisinformation.)

It is the grammar section (in between the twotranslating sections) however that I have the biggest complaints about. Most of what is presented is correct, but the section is swimming withtypos and other strange and quirky layout issues. I can live with theamusing English spelling "asterix" (p. 273), or even themisspelled past participle of gjøre (which should read gjort, but appearsas gjordt (p. 274). But totally beyond my comprehension are the comparativeand superlative adjective forms 'interessantmer' instead of 'merinteressant' and 'interessantmest' instead of 'mest interessant' (p. 279).This serious breach of proofreading is repeated with four differentadjectives on that page. It gives one concern about trusting anything elsein the dictionary.

Also in the introduction, where abbreviations areexpanded, one reads that "US" means "United States (ofAmerika)..." and that fl stands for "flertall (majority)"but they obviously meant "plural" in a grammatical sense.

Irecommend Einar Haugen's Norwegian English Dictionary and perhaps theBerlitz compact dictionary for going the other way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best!
I've tried several courses for learning Norwegian, and this beats them all.

Pimsleur's philosophy is that you first need to learn how to speak a language before you start trying to learn how to read it and learn the grammatical structures. The way they apply this philosophy is very effective. You can only learn so much in their 5 hours of lessons, but you learn it extremely well. They teach you to speak at a normal speed with the appropriate inflection, which is very important in Norwegian.

Også, they have done a fantastic job of identifying expressions that you are most likely to use in conversation.I only wish they had more than 5 hours worth of lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pimsleur Norwegian
Wonderful program, easy to learn. I play the CDs on my way to work and back...great use of my time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boy, this method WORKS!
I have attempted several methods in learning Norwegian. My main stumbling block was pronunciation and an over-emphasis on grammar. What I needed was an easier way to learn pronunciation and something that would be more natural to learn. I have found that in this CD set!

What this CD set does is teach you the language in a way that I think most humans learned to speak, by listening and repeating with an understanding what the words mean. It starts slowly, but does not so slow as you lose interest. On the contrary, these CDs keep your interest at every turn. First of all, each lesson is 30 minutes long, not too long as to lose interest and sharpness but long enough to give you a solid lesson. Next each lesson builds on previous lessons and quite often somethig you learned 90 minutes ago creeps up and makes sure you remember the whole course.

This is mostly a listening course. There is a tiny booklet included but its main purpose is to teach you to recognize the words you have already verbally learned. Just as a child learns to speak before reading, this course does the same thing. I would HIGHLY recommend this course to beginners and would recommend using this course ALONE before any other study aids. Once this course has been mastered then you can comfortably move on to other aids. Again, this is a great course!

4-0 out of 5 stars Norwegian CD by Pimsluer
This program is by far the best way to learn a language. It does not cover a lot of ground for 10 lessons, but when you are done, you know it backwards and forwards. The biggest problem is that it is verbal only, so you never know if what you are saying is really correct. I would say that this is a "must have" for anyone learning the language, but do not rely solely on it- use it in conjunction with other learning tools (books, cd's, etc).

2-0 out of 5 stars Might cause problems for you
This is set up in the following format: First you have the native speaker saying something, then you have an interpreter give you the English translation. They slow sentences down for you, break them into smaller parts, then say them in a normal speed.
It's not too bad but I do recommend you proceed with caution. The problem is that this is almost completely oral learning. There's a REALLY thin pamphlet that comes with it but it has very little information. While that may be fine, if you plan on continuing your studies you might be surprised when you actually see all the words that you were listening to and repeating with these recordings. For example:
Although the word for "speak" is pronounced sneh-KID, it is spelled "snakker." You really don't get that from just listening.
Also you'll not be properly introduced to the three additional letters of the Norwegian language å æ and ø. This is crucial for development of the language.
Depending on what you are learning Norwegian for this might not be too bad for you. If you want to be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking the language I recommend taking more conventional methods. You'll be better off in the long run. ... Read more

Product Description
This study advances a theory of weight in which a syllable shape in a given position is only heavy if it, on average, is sufficiently proportionally longer than a CV (consonant-vowel) in the same position. While the analysis of weight is consistent with the basic tenets of moraic theory, a departure is made from standard moraic theory which takes moras to be prosodic units associated directly to segments. Many languages, including Norwegian, exhibit CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) weight asymmetry: CVC is usually heavy but behaves as light word-finally. It is proposed that this asymmetry is motivated by facts of phonetic length and human perception. The theory of weight proposed treats moras a property of syllables as a whole. The stress system of Norwegian is analyzed in detail, taking the categorization of syllable weight to be pre-determined by this weight criterion. Evidence for the stress pattern of the language is drawn from the lexicon and the results of a novel word experiment administered to native Norwegian speakers, giving a more motivated and complete analysis of Norwegian stress than has previously been proposed. ... Product Description
This book is a pioneering attempt within the university study of English as a foreign language to provide the discipline of culture studies (particularly the study of American/British civilization) with a theory and methodology of its own. Focusing on the anthropological concept of culture as belief systems, the author suggests that culture studies should be primarily concerned with the analysis of the interplay between language and ideology. Essentially interdisciplinary, the field is conceived as a philological, text-oriented study of culture. ... Read more
