Product Description
If you want to progress quickly from the basics to understanding, speaking and writing Norwegian with confidence, then Teach Yourself Norwegian is the book/CD course for you. Although aimed at those with no previous knowledge, it is equally suitable for anyone wishing to brush up existing knowledge for a holiday or business trip. Key structures and vocabulary are introduced in 16 thematic units progressing from introducing yourself and dealing with everyday situations to writing a letter and making a complaint. In the later units you will become familiar with many aspects of Norwegian life as well as the language. The emphasis is on communication throughout with important language structures introduced through dialogues on the accompanying recording. The course is centred around two main characters: an English student, John, and a Norwegian girl, Bente. You will follow them through their ups and downs in a variety of situations during a year in Norway. There are plenty of exercises to practise the language as it is introduced and tips throughout to help with grammar. Cultural information tips give useful advice and information for anyone planning a trip to Norway.Teach Yourself Norwegian is written in Bokmal. Bokmal is the standard Norwegian language, used by approximately 85% of Norwegians. It has developed from Dano-Norwegian, which originated during the 400 or so years when Norway was part of Denmark. The new edition retains the tried-and-tested structure of the lessons but has been updated to include a brand new double CD of the audio material. Popular features of the previous edition have been retained: - an English-Norwegian vocabulary, - a glossary of grammatical terms, - a taking it further section directing you to further sources of real Norwegian. The book (ISBN 0340 887559) and CDs (0340 887575) are is available separately. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars WARNING! This version does not contain the instruction book!
This version is audio only. There are at least three versions of this product available, and it was very difficult to tell them apart on Amazon when I purchased this copy. I intended to buy the version with the instruction booklet, as I also want instruction in written Norwegian. I was very disappointed to get this instead. My mistake, but the description could use clarifying. If you're looking for the audiobook version of Teach Yourself Norwegian, this is the one. Otherwise, you want one of the other versions available. Be careful when you order! ... Read more

Product Description
This book investigates different types of verb-PP combinations and examines the types of meanings which arise when the argument structure of the PP fuses with the verbal argument structure. Focussing mainly on data from Norwegian, the book investigates three different empirical domains of PP-VP combinations and concludes that the arising interpretations result from a combination of the fine-grained structure of the PP, the structure of the verb phrase, and the different modes of combination. The book sheds new light on the syntax-semantics interplay while adding new insight about the properties of the category P in Norwegian. The book also contributes to the debate between Lexicalism and Constructionism, and it concludes that a moderate Constructionist model with a fine-grained syntactic structure determining interpretation is best equipped to handle the enormous flexibility of verb-prepositional phrase combinations of the types explored. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a general English -> Norwegian dictionary
This slender volume has one purpose: It is the English to Norwegian glossary to the textbook series "Norsk, nordmenn og Norge." It is not a glossary for general use.

Many of theglosses in this glossary deal only with the specific textbook it waswritten for. I recomment unless you are using the Norsk, nordmenn textbookseries, you find another more complete English -> Norwegian glossary /dictionary. ... Read more

Product Description
PREFACE. Foreign languages and their literatures are becoming, more and more. objects of study among the American people. This is a natural consequence of the travels of Americans in Europe and of the constantly increasing intercourse between them and the many foreign immigrants coming to this country. . Among these, there are about 160,000 Norwegians and 40,000 Danes, and the knowledge of their language may be of practical as well as literary value to many Americans. With the purpose of assisting them in acquiring this knowledge, I have written this Grammar and Reader with a Vocabulary, and added thereto Remarks on the history of the language and Notes on the authors from whom selections have been made. The Grammar presupposes, that its students know the various grammatical definitions, and it presents to them, not a General Grammar of what is cornnJon to the languages, but a Special Grammar of what is peculiar to the Norwegian-Danish language. By the help of this book the students will find their way into the literary treasures of those two nations, which, although not great in numbers, have a great literature, and have, from the times of the Sagas and the Scalds, produced men who have made their mark in the history of the world, and have presented to it works of lasting value. The Norwegians and Danes belong to the great Teutonic race but as their history in ancient times was interwoven with that of the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans, so their language is in many respects similar to the English, of which, also, this Grammar and Reader will give evidence. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars an old dictionary, slapped together by Hippocrene
This dictionary is a photocopy of an older dictionary, probably out of copyright restriction. Its age shows on every page, and almost all definition articles.

Hippocrene has the reputation of producing cheap book cheaply. It does not have a reputation of producing QUALITY foreign language material. AVOID this book and everything else published by Hippocrene.

2-0 out of 5 stars Keep shopping
My Norwegian friend tells me the translations it uses are rather formal. Indeed for some words she says it borders on archaic. The lack of gender information and limited information on irregular verbs also really hurt this dictionary. But hey the cover's nice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book if at all possible
The only thing that this book does well is obfuscate the Norwegian language. It is lacking both in completeness and clarity in almost every one of its features. This list of irregular verbs is not only severelyincomplete (leaving out one of the most commonly used verbs: to have), theparticiple form of those verbs that are listed is left out.Gender islisted, but the book does not distinguish between masculine and feminine(grouping both into the "common gender") without distinguishingthe words that must be used in the feminine. That is only a short list ofthe problems with this book.Hippocrene books owes us an explanation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality in both manufacture & content
I bought this book to help me communicate with a friend from Norway, she cannot understant half of it !

1-0 out of 5 stars bad choice
I purchased this book before leaving and studying Norwegian intensively for a year. Now that I am in Norway I need to use the book quite frequently, but find many faults with it.It seems to be much moretailored to the Norwegian than to the native English speaker.Forinstance, gender is left out of the dictionary though this is quiteimportant to know. Also, many common words and phrases are not given.Iwould recommend that one try another dictionary. ...
