Product Description
Long before the first European settlers crossed the Atlantic, Canada's original inhabitants had a culture based on respect for the earth and all forms of life. These vibrant and practical values enriched Canada's formation. In fact, the early settlers from Europe might not even have survived if not for the help and support of Canada's First Nations, who taught the newcomers how to live in a harsh natural environment. First Nations people shared their values and knowledge, played active roles in Canada's journey toward Confederation, and helped create the modern nation Canada has become today. In the twenty-first century, First Nations are more and more taking their rightful place in Canada's culture and government. Their wisdom and insights are helping to guide Canada in its role in the international community. In this book, you will learn about the contributions of these First Nations communities. In particular, you will make an imaginary trip to Nunavut, Canada's new First Nations territory, and gain a greater understanding of Canada's rich and lasting Native heritage. ... Read more

Product Description

In The Road to Nunavut, R. Quinn Duffy analyses federal government policy on the social and economic growth of the Inuit. Duffy describes the economic, social, and political changes in the Eastern Arctic and provides the historical background to the current debate on Inuit land claims and political subdivision of the Northwest Territory. Gradually, and somewhat reluctantly, the Canadian government assumed the role of guardian of the Inuit and became involved in their housing, education, employment, and health services. The evolution of government-supported services created problems that are still unmet; the changes in life-style that resulted were exacerbated by unemployment and the Inuit's inferior social and political status. Starting in the 1960's, these complex problems led to increased delinquency, violence, and abuse of alcohol. Duffy shows how the Inuit gradually assumed responsibility for improving their situation, eventually developing the political maturity that found expression in the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada, its affiliated organizations, and the pressure for regional self-determination.

Product Description
Nunavut: Rethinking Political Culture explores the complex processes at work in the generation of political cultures. Drawing upon extensive fieldwork and quantitative analysis, it provides the first systematic, empirical study of political life in Nunavut, offering comprehensive analysis of the evolving nature of aboriginal self-government in the Arctic and shedding crucial light on Inuit - non-Inuit relations.

Political culture in Nunavut has long been characterized by different approaches to political life: traditional Inuit attitudes toward governance, federal aspirations for the political integration of Inuit, and territorial strategies for institutional development. Ailsa Henderson links these features to contemporary political attitudes and behaviour, concluding that a distinctive political culture is emerging in Nunavut.

Original and provocative, Nunavut explores political attitudes, behaviour, and institutions in Nunavut before, during, and after the creation of the new territory, challenging our understandings of how political cultures are generated and sustained.

This book will appeal to political scientists, sociologists, and others interested in culture and politics, Aboriginal studies, and northern development. ... Read more

Product Description
An epochal tragedy is taking place in our time with the totalitarian destruction of Aboriginal cultures. In the face of overwhelming odds, Aboriginal communities have shown remarkable resources for creative resistance. In the process, they are challenging the concept of democracy as it is practised in Canada.

In Like the Sound of a Drum, Peter Kulchyski brings new primary research and contemporary political theory to the study of Aboriginal politics in Denendeh and Nunavut. Part ethnography, part theory, part narrative, Kulchyski uses first-hand interviews and stories from the Dene communities of Fort Simpson and Fort Good Hope in the Northwest Territories and the Inuit community of Pangnirtung (Panniqtuuq), Nunavut, to draw out the strengths of local cultures and their strategies for resistance to the imposed political policies and structures of the State. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating expose
Written by Peter Kulchyski (professor of Native Studies, University of Manitoba), Like the Sound of a Drum: Aboriginal Cultural Politics in Denendeh and Nunavut is part ethnography, part narrative of the author's travels among Aboriginal communities of Canada. Compiling what Kulchyski learned interviewing elders and Aboriginal politicians, partaking of daily life, and attending community meetings, Like the Sound of a Drum offers an in-depth examination of the modern-day culture and lifestyle of three communities: Fort Simpson and Fort Good Hope in Denendeh, and Pangnirtung in Nunavut. Of especial interest is Kulchyski's examination of how Aboriginal communities strive to maintain political and cultural independence in creative ways, and how they challenge the concept of democracy as it is undertaken in Canada. A fascinating expose, rich in detail from cover to cover and illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs. ... Read more

Product Description
On the surface, naming is simply a way to classify people and their environments. The premise of this study is that it is much more - a form of social control, a political activity, and a key to identity maintenance and transformation. Governments legislate and regulate naming; people fight to take, keep, or change their names. A name change can indicate subjugation or liberation, depending on the circumstances. But it always signifies a change in power relations. Since the late 1970s, the author has looked at naming and renaming, cross-culturally and internationally, with particular attention to the effects of colonisation and liberation. The experience of Inuit in Canada is an example of both. Colonisation is only part of the Nunavut experience. Contrary to the dire predictions of cultural genocide theorists, Inuit culture - particularly traditional naming - has remained extremely strong, and is in the midst of a renaissance. Here is a ground-breaking study by the founder of the discipline of political onomastics. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Kiumajut [Talking Back]: Game Management and Inuit Rights 1900-70 examines Inuit relations with the Canadian state, with a particular focus on two interrelated issues. The first is how a deeply flawed set of scientific practices for counting animal populations led policymakers to develop policies and laws intended to curtail the activities of Inuit hunters. Animal management informed by this knowledge became a justification for attempts to educate and, ultimately, to regulate Inuit hunters. The second issue is Inuit responses to the emerging regime of government intervention. The authors look closely at resulting court cases and rulings, as well as Inuit petitions. The activities of the first Inuit community council are also examined in exploring how Inuit began to "talk back" to the Canadian state.

The authors' award-winning previous collaboration, Tammarniit [Mistakes]: Inuit Relocation in the Eastern Arctic 1939-63, focused on government responsibility, social welfare, and relocation in Inuit relations with the state. Kiumajut is not a continuation of Tammarniit, but rather an interrelated, stand-alone study that examines a separate range of issues relevant to a historical understanding of community development in Nunavut. Kiumajut draws on new material compiled from archival sources and from an archive of oral interviews conducted by the authors with Inuit elders and others between 1997 and 1999. This volume provides the reader with new and important insights for understanding this critical period in the history of Inuit in Canada. ... Read more

Product Description
Arctic Justice is the story of the execution of a white fur trader by an Inuk. Shelagh Grant recounts how this event was crucial in establishing law enforcement in the High Arctic and documents its tragic consequences for Inuit in the subsequent decades. This compelling and generously illustrated account combines archival history with Inuit oral history to shed light on the conflicting values and perceptions of two disparate cultures. Despite the fact that Nuqallaq was following Inuit customary law in carrying out a collectively sanctioned act to defend the community from the dangerously crazed trader Robert Janes, Canadian authorities made the unprecedented decision to put him and two accomplices on trial for murder. Grant shows how this decision was motivated by Canada's international political concerns for establishing sovereignty over the Arctic and how the outcome of the trial - Nuqallaq's sentence to ten years of hard labour in Stony Mountain Penitentiary and subsequent death from tuberculosis - was determined more by fear than evidence. In what amounts to a social history of North Baffin Island in the twentieth century, Grant offers telling portraits of the people involved, including the victim, Robert Janes of Newfoundland; Captain J.E. Bernier of the CGS Arctic, explorer and friend to the Inuit; English trader and entrepreneur Henry Toke Munn; the investigating RCMP officer Staff-Sargeant A. H.; Judge L. A. Rivet, and others. Most importantly we meet the remarkable Nuqallaq, his wife Ataguttiaq, and the Inuit of North Baffin Island. Arctic Justice will appeal to anyone interested in the Arctic and its indigenous peoples, contact history, anthropology, legal history, and RCMP history. ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years, the view has emerged that the Inuit were coerced by the Canadian government into abandoning life in scattered camps for centres of habitation. In "Arctic Migrants/Arctic Villagers", David Damas demonstrates that for many years government policies helped maintain dispersed settlement, but that eventually concerns over health, housing, and education and welfare brought about policy changes that inevitably led to centralization. Damas shows that while there were cases of government-directed relocation to centres, centralization was largely voluntary as the Inuit accepted the advantages of village living. In examining archives, anthropological writings, and the results of field research from an anthropological perspective, Damas provides fresh insights into the policies and developments that led to the centralization of Inuit settlement during the 1950s and 1960s. ... Product Description

For nearly five hundred years, men have been drawn by the vision of a commercially viable and strategically advantageous seaway that runs west and north from Europe to the Far East.Though costs currently outweigh benefits, the oil and natural gas finds in the Beaufort Sea and the Canadian Arctic islands, as well as the possibility of higher energy prices in the 1990s, have made a gradual increase in the volume and duration of navigation in and about the Passage seem likely. While many of the technological obstacles to regular surface shipping have been overcome, new obstacles, largely political, are rapidly becoming apparent. These problems are thoroughly discussed, as are the international legal aspects of Canadian Arctic waters policy, environmental and socio?economic implications of Arctic marine transportation, and the issue of subsurface activities. In his concluding essay the editor, Franklyn Griffiths, suggests that if Canadians are to become true keepers of the Passage they will need a better understanding of their Arctic marine spaces and a new appreciation of themselves as a northern people.
