3-0 out of 5 stars It's OOOOKKKKK but not all that
I wouldn't waste my money. I thought it would have good questions. The reviews took up most of the book with only 2-3 pages of questions at the end of each chapter. In addition with this I purchased F.A. Davis Maternal-NOW THAT'S A WONDERFUL BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver!!!
This is a great book! It has saved me so much time in studying. I have in here all the informattion that I need to get ready for my class tests. It summarizes everything in a very easy way to remember and the pre and post test are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review book
I used this book to study for the CPN (Certified Pediatric Nurse) exam. I have been a peds nurse for two years in both the hospital and community setting, and this book is excellent at providing concise, useful information broken down by system, as well as nclex style practice questions and full rationales for each question. The CD rom has the 20 pre- and post- test questions from each chapter, as well as an additional 30 questions per topic. While it is not exhaustive of every pediatric condition, it is an excellent aid and reviews basic and vital information.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent study guide
This books provides wonderful support and study guide material.Used it all through pediatrics with much success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book saved me during my Maternity & Child Rotation in nursing school. I think my professor used this book as a reference especially the NCLEX style questions. I found the chapter on congenital cardiac problems especially helpful because it was easy to understand with nice pictures. I also loved the growth & development chapter which clearly outlined all the Erickson & Piaget theories. There are 15 chapters in this book covering all the different body systems. I love how this book gets right to the point giving you the information that you need to know without all the extra fluff found in a text book.On the CD there are 10 pre-test, 10 post-test, and 30 extra NCLEX questions per chapter( that's 50 NCLEX questions per chapter). I don't love how the CD is laid out but the questions are very good. Overall this is an excellent reference and study aid for pediatrics. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I was forced to buy this for school and have regretted the purchase ever since. If you have the choice go with another text. This book provides too much unnecessary details that seem to confuse the reader. It also doesnt explain concepts very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I really like this book, it is the most comprehensive med-surg I have ever read. There is one other one I used, in 1983 that even comes close, since then I have been disapointed up until now, I am glad I purchased it. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Nursing Student's Dream!
I couldn't afford this item new the present price is quite expensive- however, I purchased a used copy and let's just say my limited student budget is thanking me! I am so very pleased!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students!
This book is easy to use, and full of information as well as illustrations. The CD is also very useful. Highly recommended. for all nursing students.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Resource for Peds Nursing
This book is well-indexed -- which any student can appreciate -- and neatly edited. Further, the ATI Pediatric Nursing module relies on this almost exclusively. If your school requires ATI, knowing this may help you to streamline your study a bit.

Pathophysiology, nursing interventions, and even nursing diagnoses are laid out in a logical manner -- helpful for those dreaded care plans. The tables and graphs provided in this text are very helpful. So far this is my favorite text from all my courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pediatric Text
This thick text is up-to-date, thorough, challenging, and interesting. Graphics and call-out boxes are useful. I enjoy learning from this book. I recently studied the chapter on cardiac issues and found it easy to read and understand. I occasionally have to look up words, e.g., recrudescent, but that is a good thing. I don't find a lot of repetitive material or useless illustrations as in some other texts.
I will likely keep this book and continue to reference it after the class.

Criticism: the CD "NCLEX" questions are very weak. I am relying more on other sources such as Mary Ann Hogan's NCLEX review book: Child Health Nursing. I wouldn't go without Wong, however. A few times, I have found some unclear writing and once what looked like a data dump into a graphic (describing research results and sources in a cluttered mess), but overall, the text is fantastic.

Other notes: Saunders NCLEX review book has many of the same materials as Wong (I have both texts).

5-0 out of 5 stars condition
Book was received in a fast manner in new condition. I like the organization of the subjects in this book. The wording is clear and concise. The reader is able to understand and apply what is being learned. Book does a very good job of prioritizing nursing interventions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CCRN book review
I just passed the CCRN exam, and of all the reference material I used to study with, this book (the 5th edition) was the best. It has enough content to comprehend the subjects that are tested, but not too detailed to be confusing or overwhelming. This should be your priority book for studying. There are a lot of practice questions that test your knowledge. They are more straight forward than the actual CCRN questions (which seem like advanced NCLEX type questions).
The 5th edition book will be a permanent book in my library and for review (or until I'm not cheap enough to buy this or future editions). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Health Assessment in Nursing
This book was in a terrible condition. It appear as if the book fell in water and thehard cover was torn up. This book should not be sold for nearly $70.00 considering the new book cost $90.00. The condition was listed as very good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Odd Flow for a Textbook
This textbook was assigned for my 3000-level Physical Assessment course during the first semester of my BSN program, and we have rarely used or referenced it in class. The bit of reading that I have done on my own reveals an odd flow to the choppy chapters, with full-page charts and example assessments randomly spaced throughout the text. The information is fairly straight-forward, but it's frustrating due to the setup. Luckily, I don't think I will be needing it much in the coming months.

Product Description

The most comprehensive of its kind, this classic resource in the field of nursing theory provides an in-depth look at 49 theorists of historical, international, and significant importance. Each chapter features a clear, consistent presentation of a key nursing philosophy or theory. Case studies and critical thinking activities help bridge the gap between theory and application.

    • A case study at the end of each theorist chapter puts the theory into a larger perspective, helping you understand how the information can be applied to practice.

    • A Major Concepts & Definitions box in each theorist chapter outlines and summarizes the theory's most significant ideas and clarifies content-specific vocabulary.

    • Each theorist chapter concludes with an extensive bibliography outlining numerous primary and secondary sources of information ideal for research projects.

    • Critical Thinking Activities at the end of each theorist chapter challenge you to process the theory presented and apply it to personal and hypothetical practice situations.

    • Introductory chapters provide you with a strong foundation in the history and philosophy of science, logical reasoning, and the theory development process.

    • Diagrams for theories help you visualize and better understand inherently abstract concepts.

    • Each theorist chapter is written by a scholar specializing in that particular theorist's work - often an individual who has worked closely with the theorist.

    • Most chapters have been reviewed and edited by the theorist for currency and accuracy, further validating the accounts set forth in the text.

    • Theorist birth (and if applicable, death) dates help you place each individual into a time context.

      • A new chapter introduces the theorist Afaf Meleis and covers her Transition Theory that has helped shape the theoretical development of nursing.

      • Points for further study at the end of each chapter direct you to assets available for additional information.

      • Need to know information is highlighted in at-a-glance summary boxes throughout to help you quickly review key concepts.

      • Personal quotes from the theorists help you gain insight and make each complex theory more memorable.

      • Updated references include only published works to ensure accuracy and credibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Seller!
Great condition, fast delivery! I received my book in less than 3 days! Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Tortured Tenured Treatise
As a 1st year nursing student (with two college degrees), this book is required reading (not so much by the teaching institution), but the Board of Education. Some lifer-academic (birds of a feather) in the Board of Education must have been gah-gah on it? It's hard to read without falling asleep. It makes references (just about every few lines) to authors that I have not read, and to theories/concepts that are not fully explained. The authors are tediously wordy, self-absorbed, and oblivious to the reader. My guess is, that this book is written by some academics in an effort to satisfy their tenure requirements. At best, it could be used as a reference book for someone having to write a dissertation for a master's or a doctorate, but of absolutely no practical use to an undergraduate nursing student. Save your eyes, and don't read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where is Lillian Wald?
The book is very accessible and easy to read. Bear in mind that it's not a long exposition of theories of any one nursing theorist, but a compilation of the major strands of thought of many theorists. From there, you can do more research on any theorist(s) you are interested in. One big disappointment was the absence of Lillian Wald. Surely the founder of the Henry Street Settlement deserves a couple of pages in this book?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great help for writing papers
Helped me decide on a theorist to do my clinical inquiry project on... I got a 100% on my final paper, so I found it very. Helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars MS/N Candidate Review
Returned to school to work on my Masters in Nursing and many of the theorists did not exist when I was in my RN program. This book provides easily accessable info and is a great reference. Used and cited it in 2 papers and recieved excellent feedback from prof for using this reference.
      Would highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I recently became a lactation specialist and this books is WONDERFUL !!! I am also a nurse hoping to work L&D and this book will be very handy. Very easy to read and understand too.

4-0 out of 5 stars User-friendly book for the Lactation Consultant
Rather thanbeing a dry, academic text book about human lactation, this book focuses on the process of consulting with a nursing mother.
It does indeed contain plenty of scientific research with thorough citations, and makes it relevant to practice.
I especially like that it also allows room for the "art" of breastfeeding; for example mentioning that while indeed there are basic guidelines for manual expression, "Encourage mothers to experiment with various hand positions until they find what works best for them. There is no one correct way for this or may other techniques.Honor individual choices . . ."
      Many useful appendices.Recommended.

      Some room for improvement:
Appendix G, "Baby Feeding Requirements," lacks units for "required milk;" ounces can only be assumed.
Reference for this chart is 1990 in this 2005 edition.
      --------------
Add on review: Now I have the 2010 5th edition too. At the time of writing this it is cheaper than the 2005 4th edition on Amazon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly!
This book is very easy to use. The format makes it simple to review and apply in practice. Very handy to have in your 'tool box'.

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of great information
This book was a wonderful compliment to the course I took. Keep in mind that it is a textbook though so perhaps too dense if you are only looking for light before bed reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete and rich!
Worth its weight in gold. Complete and rich of details. It is a fundamental text for those who already have a basis on lactation physiology and want to learn more about consultant profession. I don't give it five stars because it doesn't contain any special chapters on Brazil's situation on breastfeeding and laws about it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good review not enough questions
I bought this book because I was looking for a good guideline to study for my EC exam for my BSN program.
Pros: It is easy to read, and it lists things that are needed to know for the exam.
      cons: not enough practice questions.
for $42 I thought this book would come with a CD of questions.
For this test I will be using the Reviews and Rationales mental health nursing instead so I can practice questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychiatric Nursing Made Incredibly easy
I bought the CD because I did not have any clue about psych nursing and I used to get the worst grades on this section of nursing. After I bought this CD and did the questions chapter by chapter, I managed to get A's on this
section. It is not a joke, but the CD rom worked wonders for me and I will highly recommend it to anybody who is struggling with psych. It is a shame they stopped producing more CD rom for this part of nursing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great relief
I found this book very helpful in some sections and a little frustrating in others! It has a great amount of information and the main thing for me, it confirmed that the pain I was having in feeding my toddler while pregnant, was normal.

What it lacked for me, was a little bit more of the 'how to's for some important yet realistic decisions.I had to stop feeding due to the pain but got no help from this book on 'how to'.

It is an informative book definitely. The stories splashed throughout are a great comfort and interesting to read but I was expecting a bit more information on how to follow through with the different options in feeding while pregnant and beyond.

This IS a great book if you want to keep feeding through pregnancy and beyond. The writing is sensitive, informative and encouraging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information!
This book was just what I was looking for!Answered pretty much every question I had regarding tandem nursing. We're considering another baby and this definitely helped put a lot of concerns I have in perspective.I nursed my daughter while pregnant, but she weaned halfway through. This helped me understand my body, the changes that happen during pregnancy, and how my child(ren) may respond. Also looked at what happens beyond pregnancy. The anecdotes throughout were wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book on tandem nursing
Great book although I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks while breastfeeding my 9 month old.The contractions I was having only while breastfeeding were so intense that sometime I felt like crying.Just like the book says, you have to listen to you body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
We began our nursing journey thinking that babies automatically weaned at around 15 months ... when our oldest had multiple, severe food allergies and I had to be on an elimination diet for her, we started to worry about making sure she didn't wean 'too soon.'

When we became pregnant with our second child, I had done enough research to know that nursing through a pregnancy, and tandem nursing following a baby's birth, was a viable option. We decided that was the route we wanted to take.

This book has great information in it about how to make that happen.

That said - we did end up weaning midway through the pregnancy; I think I had a hormonal reaction to nursing while pregnant and I know it was the best thing for our relationship, even if it wasn't ideal for my then-2 1/2 year old.:(

If we have a third child, we will give this another try.I know that weaning our eldest before she was ready did impact her negatively for awhile; she struggled a little through the transition.:(

4-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Look at Tandem Nursing
This is a really informative and helpful book and it really does justice to the topic that it covers.I consider its greatest attribute to be that it doesn't sugarcoat the details involved in the tandem nursing/nursing while pregnant relationship. In fact, while I have nursed through two pregnancies, I have never tandem nursed. With my first, I knew the option was available, but hadn't done any research on it.I figured that what would happen would happen and I would deal with it, but I fully expected to be nursing two for a while. But, it didn't happen since he decided nursing was for babies once the baby came along. With my second, I decided to look into the option and to be prepared. However, once I read the book, in my first trimester and again in my second, I realized this was NOT something I wanted to pursue. It made it easier to start the weaning process with my second while I still had time and to get him used to other methods of comfort.

Hurray for Hilary Flower for her truthful and helpful look at the subject. As the only book on the topic available, it's a wonderful resource to have. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Book falling apart
The book was labeled as Used-Acceptable. Well, I received it with the book and the binding in two seperate parts. Not to mention that the book itself was coming apart into 3 different sections. If I didn't need it so badly, and had the extra time, I would have returned this book to sender!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Rarely used this book
I purchased this book for my first nursing semester pharmacology course. The book is great it has plenty of drug information, tables, and a calculations section, but I did not need it. My instructor's notes were so good that I rarely had to open this book. I ended up selling the book back to Chimes. It was okay for me because it put me to sleep, but I don't want to discourage anyway from getting it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Problems with Binding
I bought the book at the beginning of my first year of nursing school. However, we did not begin using it until 2nd semester, so I put it up on the bookshelf the way it came. When time came around to using the book, I broke the plastic seal around the book and opened it... to find that the binding in the center of the book was coming apart. If your a person that likes to keep things neat and organized (me), this will definitely peeve you off! I am so put off abt it... I still get angry everytime I need to use the book (often). Since I bought the book months ago, I cant do anything about it. ... Read more
