5-0 out of 5 stars review of the new gi revolution
I found this guide to be extremely useful in understanding how carbs are processed by the body and especially how a little thoughtful planning can have a good result. This guide affords one the information not usually available on product labels. In addition to the usual info you would expect in a guide of this type, this book provides sample shopping lists and restaurant options. What I found most surprizing were the sections of the book which addressed gluten free dining out, and a whole section devoted to low GI gluten free eating.I give this guide my hearty recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars glycemic index
For the diabetic who doesnt have access to a Dietician with the knowledge of the Glycemic Index. Although lacking in a lot of food products (American made) The Generic information is very useful in trying to maintain low glycemic diets. Other information produced in the book such as types of sugars, sweetners, etc. is very informitive Trying to locate a glycemic index produced from American resources is A JOKE. Its sad that the American Diabetes Association cannot help you with obtaining Glycemic index values. Thanks to the University of Sidney, and Dr. Jennie Brand -Miller , Information for diabetics is available.I do Suggest the 2009 edition which has moreglycemic updates . This little paperback has been a lifesaver for me.!

3-0 out of 5 stars GI shopper's guide
Good book to refer too.Only problem is alot of the products listed are not sold in local markets in the US.But it does help with eating out, portion sizes, and reading labels.I do mean the TRUE label meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Guide
The more I learn about nutrition, the more the evidence points to sugar and refined grains as the combined #1 problem in our diets contributing to the obesity and diabetes epidemics. As I have limited my intake of sugar and grains and paid greater attention to the Glycemic Index, I have noticed that I feel better throughout the day and don't experience the same spikes and dips in energy and hunger. It has also helped me manage my weight better, which has been a chronic issue for me. This guide is helpful in letting you know how to manage your sugar intake, but it's also important to understand the concept of Glycemic Load, which is not the same as the Index.(For example, eating protein and fiber at the same meal as your carbohydrate intake lowers or slows down the glycemic load, which is just as important as the total index.) This is a good guide to have and refer to when needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR DIETERS
One of my problems with trying to maintain a healthy weight is continuing feeling of hunger. The concept of Glycemic Index (G.I.), i.e. how fast food is turned into blood sugar, which in turn causes the pancreas to put out a lot of insulin, which in turn causes extreme hunger, always made sense to me. The problem was, how do you know what is the G.I. of all the food around you. Well this book perfectly listed almost every food that you will be exposed to. Once I selected to only eat really low G.I. foods, my hunger left me right away and my weight started to come off.
The only reason I didn't rate the book a 5 star is something they did that they maybe thought would be helpful but got in the way. They classified all the foods like vegetables, nuts, meats, etc. then within that classification listed them alphabetically. Well that kept getting in my way because, not being a food expert, I couldn't always guess what was the food I was looking for classification. Many times, I thought they hadn't listed the food, but in actuality it I was looking in the wrong clarification. It would have been better if all the foods were simply listed alphabetically. I didn't care about its classification because that had no nutritional impact to me. ... Read more

How to Use the ‘Glycemic Index’ to Melt Away Fat & Quickly Get the Lean Body of Your Dreams!

REVEALED – How to Lose Weight & Get Healthier … Without Starving Yourself, Depleting Your Energy or Spending a Fortune!

You may know that the glycemic index has been used by people with diabetes and insulin resistance to monitor their calorie, carbohydrate and protein intake for years … but did you also know that research has shown it is the “perfect diet” for anyone who wants to lose weight easily and keep it off?

Well, it’s true!

Whether you just need to lose a few pounds or hundreds of pounds … whether you have had some success dieting before or you have failed miserably on every diet you have ever tried … following the glycemic index can help you lose weight … and keep it off!

So What Exactly is the Glycemic Index?

The glycemic index, or GI, ranks carbohydrates on a scale from 0 to 100 according to their effect on blood sugar levels.

Foods with a high GI score are those that are rapidly digested and absorbed and that result in marked fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

Low-GI foods, which are more slowly digested and absorbed by the body, produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels, and have proven benefits for health.

In fact, numerous studies have shown that eating low GI foods is the secret to reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes … and is the key to sustainable weight loss!

Take a Look at Some of the Many Benefits You Can Expect to Receive from Eating a Diet High in Low GI Foods...

You’ll lose weight and be able to keep it off for good!

You’ll dramatically reduce your risk of heart diseas

You’ll reduce your blood cholesterol levels

You’ll delay hunger, reduce cravings and you’ll feel fuller for longer after a meal

You’ll improve your physical endurance

And much more!

Product Description
G.I., which is short for Glycemic Index—or blood-sugar index—must be maintained at an optimal level for weight control and sustained energy levels. Author Barbara Ravage recommends prudent dietary habits as she focuses on the varying effects of different carbohydrates on blood-sugar levels. Readers who follow her guidelines will conclude that it’s neither difficult nor disagreeable to substitute low GI-rated foods for others with higher ratings. For instance, she suggests pasta rather than potatoes, berry fruits rather than bananas, and wine rather than beer with meals. She also offers advice on cooking and processing foods for optimal GI ratings. Extensive charts list the GI ratings of everyday foods, specifying the grams of carbohydrates each serving yields. For easy reference, foods are grouped into types that include: breads and bread products; cereals and grains; cookies, crackers, and cakes; fruit and fruit juices; vegetables and legumes; rice and pasta; milk and dairy foods, sweets and chocolate; and drinks. Here’s a wealth of no-nonsense information in a compact volume for health-conscious readers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok Nutrition guide
This is a book for someone who knows little about nutrition i tells you what a protein is, a csrbohidrate etc. A bit to simple for my taste and little deepness in Glicemic Index. Still Think The Zone is the best book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Information but lots of out of date "science"
I thought some of the information in this book was useful but when I hit page 42 "Clearing Up the Cholesterol Confusion" I was really disappointed. The author is about 20 years out of date as far as research goes and sticks to the AMA party line like glue. There are several completely unsubstantiated claims, such as page 51 "Combined with exercise, calorie intake that matches energy nees and not smoking the G.I. will help you live a long and healthy life".Really? How much longer? The actual GI chart contains a symbol meant to represent food that is "bad" for the heart.I was in agreement through the cakes and cookies but when it appeared in the meat and dairy I knew the author had either not done her homework or did it with a completely closed mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment
I bought this book to get a better understanding of the glycemic index, and use it to try to manage my insulin-dependent diabetes.

It came up a bit short.I am a bit of a "geek", and I was hoping for a more detailed discussion of the index.Instead I got a rather simplified version.I was also hoping for numeric values, but instead the book listed a low/medium/high rating.

The index was fairly comprehensive, although it showed L/M/H, as described above.

The book has a number of useful tips, but borders on being condescending at times.

If you are looking for a theoretical understanding of what the glycemic index is all about, this is not your book.If you want a reasonable index of foods with some thoughts on lowering your glycemic load, this is not a bad place to start.

I hated the size of the book- it is about 5" square. It is too small to fit in your pocket (as an aid in shopping), and just small enough to get lost on a bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains what Gylcemic Index is.
A very good explanation of what is meant by the Glycemic Index, how it works and why.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive, Easy-to-Understand Guide to the Glycemic Index Lifestyle
I have found this book to be very helpful in understanding the Glycemic Index. It's presented in simple, easy to understand language and concepts, but it's not a dumbed-down version. It's a comprehensive look at the facts behind the glycemic index. It's motivational in tone, upbeat for the outcome, and sits on a foundation of solid science.I'm quite pleased with this purchase and have started feeling better already.GREAT book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars only good if you live in Australia
I was totally disappointed in this book. There are so many gluten free foods available in the U.S. now and none of them were listed.Even some of the most basic options were missing. If she wants to sell her book outside of Australia she needs to research the many companies that specialize in gluten free foods in other countries. The general information which is ok is easily available elsewhere, I wanted a good list of the glycemic values ofgluten free foods. This got returned.

5-0 out of 5 stars glycemic index food guide
This is the perfect guide I needed to help me look at foods and search out the glycemic index of each one.Its very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great and easy source of information
For those of us looking to deal with our type II Diabeties, it is hard to find information that is straight forward and easy to use. This little book is a fantastic tool for monitoring what really needs to be watched, a foods Glycemic Load. There are only 30 pages of text and the rest is a easy to use index.By far the best $4.00 investment I have made in keeping my blood sugar level where it needs to be.I encourage anyone dealing with diabeties to invest in this little book. You will be surprized at what you will learn about the foods you thought were safe, and the one you thought were bad.One note. This book is not aimed at losing weight, just monitoring GL.

3-0 out of 5 stars Glycemic Index - Some Science, Some Not
The GI chart presented in this book is easy to read and pretty complete. The explanation of a high GI diet and the body's insulin response is pretty simplified. At one point the author then falls back on the popular belief that fat causes heart disease and cites some research she doesn't seem to have actually read. She does get back on track when she makes the link between low GI foods (meat, cheese, butter, eggs, most vegetables, fruits, nuts)and reduction of heart disease. Fortunately, most of the book is the index itself, which is useful. ... Read more

This is a great book!I was leery at first, but as I read through it, and began to understand the Science and Theory behind the GI and Metabolic Syndrome, I decided to give it a try.

I am now six weeks into the LOW GI Plan, (Please buy the shoppers guide, it makes finding the right items easier.) and I have gone from a 40+ waist to a 36 waist and I have lost 17 pounds.I recently had a new blood test, and my glucose, triclycerides and LDL are lower and my HDL is higher.

My doctor asked what I had done, and I told him about this program. He had heard of it, but none of his patients have tried it.He now plans to further his research into this program and recommend it to other patients.

If you have Metabolic Syndrome, please give this book and it system a try.You DO NOT want to become diabetic. All you have to loose is your battle with diabetes and become insulin dependant.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm ordering copies for several friends and family!
This book is very easy to read in spite of the rather complex subject matter. I especially am enjoying the way the authors explain just WHY metabolic syndrome is something to be worried about, and how different foods are digested differently. Some of it is shocking, which is really helping motivate me to make dietary changes.

Many concrete behavioral suggestions as well, such as "instead of eating whole wheat bread, eat whole *grain* bread," things I hadn't previously even been aware of.

After awhile I might want to get a bigger, more detailed book, but this book is a great place to start.

I ordered it along with a low-GI cookbook. I look forward to making some of those recipes this weekend. ... Read more
