Amazon.com Review
The first three editions of Nutrition Almanac sold morethan 2.5 million copies. The 494-page fourth edition is expanded andupdated, with new information to answer your questions and help youplan your personal nutritional program. "Nutrition is the relationshipof foods to the health of the human body," explain the Kirschmanns(daughter and father), and they cover every aspect of how food relatesto health. A detailed section on nutrients, for example, describeseach vitamin and mineral, how it is absorbed and stored, dosage andtoxicity, deficiency effects and symptoms, beneficial effect onailments, and research findings. Another section offers 175 pages ofcommon ailments and stressful conditions that may be related tonutrition, and which nutrients, exercise, herbs, and homeopathicremedies may be beneficial for each. A shorter chapter on herbssummarizes the medicinal uses of 70 herbs. The book also includes 73pages of extensive nutritional information about common foods, showinghow they help meet the RDA for each nutrient for both babies andadults. It is surprising in a book as up-to-date as this one that theauthors choose to include height/desirable-weight charts, which arethought by experts to be outdated and irrelevant to health. Otherwise, this is a reference book you'll use often if you care about trackingand improving your nutrition. --Joan Price ... Read more

I received the Nutrition Almanac Saturday from Pacific Trails Books. They mentioned that they purchased the book from a library. They also mentioned that the book was soiled. They did not divulge that information when I ordered. In any case, I mailed everything they sent me back to them. I also included a letter as follows:

September 20, 2008

Pacific Trail Books:

We got this piece of trash Saturday, September 20. It is totally unacceptable. I am glad that our staff did not see it on Monday.

I packed it up and mailed it today, September 22.

I did not want to touch that book. I washed my hands numerous times after packaging it.

It is yours and you are under no obligation to do anything. I suggest that you toss it!

It is unconscionable to offer the condition of that book on Amazon. We do purchase items and books from Amazon...and have been satisfied with their advertised products and sellers.

In the future, we will only purchase "new" if your firm is selected as the seller.

Unfortunately, it is a lose-lose situation for both of us.

We do want a new book, latest edition, and will check with Amazon soon.

Product Description

Feeding horses wasn't supposed to be so complicated. At least that's not what Mother Nature intended. All horses in the wild really needed was a good source of grass and water and a natural salt lick of some kind. But as man began using horses for specific purposes, such as working fields, riding for pleasure or performance, or for breeding, so too did the kinds and amount of feeds owners gave to their animals. In Understanding Equine Nutrition, Karen Briggs, a horsewoman and equine nutritionist, sets out to make feeding horses simple again. Whether your horse is a growing yearling, a high-performance athlete, a mom-to-be, or a favorite pasture horse, this important guide will help you make sense of the jargon, sort out the ingredients, and make a feeding plan and menu that is best for your horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for equine managers
this is a very helpful book with all the latest nutritional information for horses.Really helpful when selecting what kind of feed your horse(s) need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the average horse owner
Easy read, pertenant information. Would recommend it for anyone involved with horses. Well organized, useful, easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I have to say this book was pretty easy to read.It does help you understand equine nutrition. How the horses' digestive system works and why horses need proper nutrition.Even a good discussion on the different types of hay.I bought the book to refresh my memory because I got myself a horse again after more than 20 years and the book helped me a great deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning nutrition book
This is a good beginning horse Nutrition book. It doesn't go into a lot of detail but will at least explain the building blocks of horse feed and help the reader understand what needs your horse has on the nutrition level. It is easy to read and is a good starter book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A guide on how to do more harm than good.
Seems like anyone who has fed a horse is an equine nutritionist these days. This book was revised in 2007, but I think the only thing that changed was the cover.I didn't readthis book in its entirety, but just skimming it was enough to know it includes some real backwards information. She recommends feeding sweet feed!(We should all be working to eradicate sugars from our horses' diets.)And she describes corn as a nutritious grain!(FOR COWS!)Yes, there is some usable information in this book, but there are much better books on equine nutrition out there.Do your research. One highly recommended book is HORSE JOURNAL Guide to Supplements and Nutraceuticals, by Eleanor M. Kellon, V.M.D. ... Read more

Written by the foremost nutritionists in the United States, each of whom has more than 15 years of clinical experience providing nutrition management of patients with an inherited metabolic disorder (IMD), Nutrition Management of Patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders supplies information to enhance the knowledge and skills needed by nutritionists/dietitians and other health care professionals who provide services to patients with IMDs. Many disorders that are disastrous to patients have been diagnosed and managed by diet, improving neurological and physical outcomes. However, nutrition problems still occur, whether due to the quality of the medical foods, inadequate prescription by health care providers or poor diet adherence by the patient. This book describes these problems and suggests that medical food manufacturers, medical geneticists, nutritionists/dietitians, and other health care providers evaluate alternative forms of nutrients that would provide optimal nutrition and health for the patients. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible, no wonder no one knows about nutrition
This book contradicts itself and is very confusing. I am a bio chemistry student and was excited to take a nutrition class until I started reading this book. The authors state "supplements are not recommeneded", then says the best foods to eat are those with added supplements like cereal. It is really hard to read this book and I now know why so many people are confused about what foods they should be eating. What a disservice to society. What a greater disservice to those who have to pay to take a class with false informaiton. I am highly disappointed in the education system for letting textbooks like this one to be used that have false information pawned off as factual. ... Read more

Product Description
Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble prohormones, the two major forms of which are vitamin D2 (or ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (or cholecalciferol). Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements, is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylation reactions to be activated in the body. Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D found in the body. Its major role is to increase the flow of calcium into the bloodstream, by promoting absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food in the intestines, and reabsorption of calcium in the kidneys. It is also necessary for bone growth and bone remodelling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. This book examines the biochemical components of vitamin D and the nutritional benefits it offers the human body. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Diet and Fertility
This book was good but it needed more content than what was provided. I fealt it gave the basic's but needed more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great if doing NFP
Love this book.It has helped with my overall female health. It would not have to be used just for fertility.Great companion if using NFP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proven Help for Cycle Irregularities & Infertility!
Diet and lifestyle can greatly affect a woman's cycles, so it's a real shame that so few doctors even consider these factors when treating cycle irregularities, infertility and other reproductive problems. Marilyn Shannon gives solid evidence to show how nutrition, lifestyle changes and supplementation can improve cycles and in some cases, eliminate problems altogether. It's a much better (and cheaper) alternative to more drastic measures like hormonal birth control, fertility drugs/treatments and surgery.

My cycle irregularities were eliminated after implementing Shannon's advice for treating low thyroid function. Imagine that! No drugs, no hormones and no expensive doctor visits. I couldn't be more pleased.

Shannon also rounds out her excellent book with chapters on good nutrition and how to make it a part of your life. She gives practical, possible solutions that work for even the busiest and most budget-conscious among us. And she doesn't go overboard like those "health food nuts" we've all met. She advocates an 80/20 rule which means eat nutritiously 80 percent of the time and don't worry about the other 20 percent. That means it's ok to eat birthday cake, have your morning coffee and take the children to McDonald's sometimes.

This book deserves 5 stars because it is readable, useful and well-documented. A must-have for women in all stages of life and a resource that should be in the library of every OB-GYN.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Knowledge
This book along with "The Art of Natural Family Planning," was probably one of the most insightful things I have read in my life.My health was literally transformed, and in turn my whole outlook on life. This is essential knowledge for any woman at any stage of life. I never understood how important a woman's fertility was to her whole well being.

It was easy to read and easy to grasp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has really helped me
This book and its references have saved me many trips to the doctor as well as a lot of pain and suffering.I recommend it to all my friends.I used to have bad cramps until I started following Shannon's advice, and I haven't had cramps now for a few years.I totally recommend it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and easy to understand
For the purposes of an undergraduate course, I think it definitely serves its purpose. The material is organized well and is written in concise manner. I haven't noticed the typos a previous reviewer complained about...perhaps I'm not reading the text closely enough? hahah. A major complaint is how in the world publishers can charge over $100 for a soft-cover text?!?! Simply ridiculous and really unconscionable.

4-0 out of 5 stars good read
i'm a nutrition major and so far i have read the first 4 chapters. It is easy to read, well layout and very informative. so far so good.:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sub for New Edition
Thanks for the item. It saved me the higher cost of purchasing the newer edition and it is completely compatible with this quarter's class.

3-0 out of 5 stars Using This Book For An Online Course
This book has a lot of information, it is kind of hard to really focus in on the material because there is so much of it. I think that the book goes overkill on many of the topics. Sometimes I would have to answer questions for my class and use several different chapters just to get all of the information. Plain and simple, if you want a book that gives a lot of information and you are able to pick it out then this is your book, if you want a simple and to the point book then I would not suggest it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition

If you eat it, you'll find information on it here. This 2001 fifth edition of the popular Nutrition Almanac includes updated nutritional composition of close to 1,000 foods, including 35 different cheeses, 25 legumes, 71 fruits and fruit juices, and 17 cuts of chicken. (Prepared foods are not included.) The tables are in bigger, bolder print than the fourth edition, a great improvement for those of us with aging eyes.

Despite the title, this is not strictly a nutrition resource. Author Lavon Dunne also includes brief overviews of 15 alternative therapies, whether or not they're related to nutrition, with resources for more information. However, Dunne does not list the Web sites for any of the resources--a defect surprising in a 2001 edition. When Nutrition Almanac's first edition appeared in 1973, little was known about the connection between nutrition and disease. In this edition, Dunne lists 68 health conditions, from abscess to vaginitis, and explains how you can prevent or treat the condition through food choices and alternative therapies such as herbs, homeopathy, aromatherapy, Ayurvedic medicine, Chinese medicine, bodywork, and mind-body therapy. --Joan Price ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you are looking for a Calorie Counter
Don't buy this book if you are looking for a Calorie Counter. This book is a good reference for a Nutritionist or Professional Practitioner, but not for every-day use for diet management.

If you are trying to manage your diet, you will do better with a pocket sized or handy calorie counter book, like

If you need hard data on foods, relationship between exercise, diet and health, information on treatments, and scientific basics for preventing illness through proper nutrition, you may find this book useful.

In my opinion the 3rd edition seems to have more detailed and useful information than this 4th edition of the book. It caught my attention that the book has kept the same title, but the authors have changed from the previous editions.

If you are looking for a detailed reference on vitamins, minerals, and supplements (which this book doesn't cover properly), you may find the "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements: The Essential Guide for Improving Your Health Naturally" an interesting complement for this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fifth Edition, yet still incomplete.
I've used the Nutrition Almanac, Third Edition, for years. This 'new' addition has very few updates compared to the third. It feels like it's written by someone working strictly with Western Medicine, even though it does give a person direction to some Natural treatments for the listed ailments. Also the book does not go too deeply into describing any vitamin or mineral.

On the positive side, the Table of Food Composition is nice to use, even though it is incomplete. And the layout of the book is quite nice, making it easy to use compared to smaller books. ... Read more
