Product Description
Written by one of the foremost experts on sports nutrition and performance, A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplements takes a critical look at the dietary supplement industry. With an estimated 60 percent of adult Americans using dietary supplements every day, the need for a thorough examination of the hundreds of products on the market is long overdue. This comprehensive guide (Selected as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine) presents straightforward analysis from a consumer's perspective, giving you the facts on more than 140 supplements and information on which supplements work (and which don't!) for a wide range of health conditions—from preventing cancer and heart disease to fighting diabetes and depression.

United States Department of Agriculture surveys show that more than 70 percent of Americans fail to achieve daily recommended levels for many vitamins and minerals. With today's emphasis on fitness, millions are investing their money and health in quick-fix solutions-supplements promoted as cure-alls to right nutritional wrongs, lower the likelihood of disease, and work dietary miracles. A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplements presents a more realistic view of supplements as neither miracle cure nor nutritional sham, but as consumer products to be accepted or rejected based on scientific fact, not fitness fantasy.

A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplements looks at the pros and cons of dietary supplements in the areas of:

  • weight loss
  • bones and joints
  • energy, brain, and mood
  • heart, eye, and gastrointestinal health
  • male and female health
  • cancer, diabetes, and the immune system
  • sports and ergogenic aids
In addition, the book presents an overview of the dietary supplement industry and the regulations that govern it and looks at the process for developing new products. Designed to cut through the confusion surrounding dietary supplements, A Guide to Understanding Dietary Supplemens is an invaluable resource for students, educators and professionals who deal with nutrition, exercise, physical education, nursing, and anyone else interested in health and fitness. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The book has almost 100 pages missing
I contacted Amazon.com to let them know that this book (the 4th edition) has almost 100 missing pages (all the appendixes). The book was replaced by another one with the same number of missing pages. I tried to contact the publisher (Wiley-Blackwell), and they make you enter your life story just to email them. The book presents great information, but unfortunately, it is a rip-off because the most important information is missing. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! RIP-OFF ALERT!

What's the best diet for good health and athletic performance? Nancy Clark, M.S., R.D., describes the dietary balance and specific foods shown to be optimal for athletes from recreational exercisers to Olympic hopefuls, citing supporting studies. Refreshingly free of high-protein hype, Clark emphasizes a varied, wholesome, moderate diet high in complex carbohydrates ("without question, wholesome carbohydrates are the best choices for fueling your muscles and promoting good health"), especially whole grains and starches; adequate but not excessive protein; and 20 to 35 percent fat. Learn the components and variables of your ideal diet, with tables of nutritional information and marvelous tidbits, such as calorie/fat counts of various fast foods. Did you realize that an Au Bon Pain pecan roll has 800 calories and 45 grams of fat--double the calories/fat in a serving of KFC's Crispy Strips? Did you know that a Dunkin' Donuts 16-ounce Coffee Coolatta with cream has 410 calories and 22 grams of fat--about equivalent to a McDonald's Quarter-Pounder?Clark, a well-known sports nutrition expert, also covers weight loss, weight gain, eating disorders, and includes 72 recipes. Highly recommended for athletes, exercisers, and average folk who want to understand how to design a personalized diet. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This product was very good, and I am very satisfied! Great for athletes who are interested in learning more about the body and food and how they work together.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
Didn't like the book, very basic for someone who has no idea how to eat right. The book based on the "Pyramid", it gives general ideas about the right food but does not specify how the same food affects if eaten at different times. Also the metabolic types described very primitive and vague. I wish there would be more useful information instead of just short articles that jump from topic to topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome information!
This is a great book with loads of information...you read it and feel like you should know all this already but for some reason, you don't.This book is good if you are looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or just eat properly. You will greatly benefit if you are exercising and not seeing the results that you are expecting. As an extra, you get some recipes in the back of the book.I have this book with me in my car all the time so I can look up something really quick if I need to.Before this book, I read alot of books that basically catered to some supplement or some diet fad...this is the real deal. This book will not tell you not to eat sweets, it will tell you to have alot less of them...and increase your veggies and fruits and whole grains...stuff you should already know but stated in a concise, efficient way.If you are working out and feel you need the right dietary information, get this book. This book has got me looking into becoming a registered dietician, you know, those people you pay alot of money to tell you the same thing as this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I would recommend this book to other people interested in sports nutrition; it is scientifically written and explained

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound nutrition education
I was looking for a book that would teach me well grounded, scientific nutrition. The kind of book where I could learn what a nutritionist might learn in school. This book does just that.No fad stuff in here. She actually has a small section where she talks about the most common fad diets today, and points out their short comings(and even their strengths if they have any).I love how the book was organized to teach how to eat daily, before an event, during events, and after events. Some info on eating to lose weight, but this is not really a "diet" book, though I think even those looking to lose weight could benefit from this book. There is also info on how to gain weight if that is what you are looking for. ... I've read dozens of books tailored for the consumer as references on companion animal nutrition.I find that most of them are written by poorly qualified authors, with minimal emphasis on current science. This book is the exception. It offers an excellent background in biochemistry necessary for an understanding of nutrition fundamentals. The writer uses language that is accessible to the lay-person, as long as they have at least a basic background in biology and chemistry. The first few chapters discuss the six basic nutrient categories, and basic points of their metabolism. The focus of the book is to instruct the reader on basic metabolism and nutritional needs during various lifestages. This book should be in the collection of any pet-nutrition enthusiast. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful for fibromyalgia sufferers
If I could give zero stars, I would, because I found this book useless. The nutritional information is very basic, general stuff you can find in any nutrition book. What it has to do with the nutritional requirements for Fibro, I don't know. The recipes contradict their dietary reccomendations by using ingredients they warn against, like white flour, and the recipes can commonly be found in cookbooks. And as another reviewer noted, the poor editing and typos make one question their credibility. This is a topic that needs to be addressed, but this book doesn't do a very good job of it. Very disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information
This book is full of useful information and it is written in a way anyone can understand. Thank you so much to all who help with this disease.

    3-0 out of 5 stars so-so
The information was basically helpful. However, it is very poorly written and you have to translate it as you read it, so to speak. The statements are made vaguely without definite backup. There are references given in the back, however it could have been written in a way that lends the statements much more weight.

1-0 out of 5 stars Haved looked or cared for it yet
I got this book and honestly found it a big disappointment. Most of the info in it is in other books and the recipes really arent any big deal.I knew most of the nutrition info already. If you already have a library of FM or nutrition info, this book is pointless.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!!

I highly recommend this book!!!It has great information on grains, problems with additives, metals and other toxins, essential vitamins and minerals to take and which ones to avoid and also contains some great recipes!!!With the guiding help of this book, i have been able to do well managing my fibromyalgia and it has helped me feel good enough to start an exercise program. ... The first scientifically proven, effective, all-natural nutritional alternative to the much-prescribed drug Ritalin Attention deficit disorder is a nutritional deficiency, not a psychological condition. Her easy-to-follow thirty-day plan has been proven just as effective as Ritalin in relieving the symptoms of ADD.

    Learn:
    - How women should boost their nutrition before conception to prevent ADD in their children.
    - Why boys are much likelier to be tagged as ADD than girls
    - How to get a reliable ADD diagnosis Reasons why parents prefer a diet plan to prescription drugs for ADD children

    - Foods to avoid that may exacerbate ADD
    - Fats and oils we all need to stay focused

The product is as the seller claimed it would be.It came and was in great condition.I would buy from this seller again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for everyone but can't hurt to try.
We have been through a lot over the past 4 years since my son was diagnosed ADHD and ODD and one thing I've learned is that, like autism, no two cases are alike. What works for one child may or may not work for another. We've had two psychologists recommend going wheat & dairy free, saying "it can't hurt to try" and "it has worked for some kids."I'm excited to read this book to find other things to try.Going wheat-free has helped only very minimally and we're just now trying the dairy-free diet but it is promising. Most things I've read say you need to try A LOT of different things before you find the one or two that will help your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADD Nutrition Solution
Great book - very informational - gives the reader hope to correct the situation. Recommend it very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many suggestions included also help with autism...
I am an adult diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, though due to significant language delay as a child, I actually meet the criteria for High-Functioning Autism.
I work with children, primarily on the autism spectrum.I am on the artificial additive free, gluten, casein, and soy free diets.I am quite healthy and happy on these. When I removed the artificials, I stopped having seizures, something medication had never controlled. My hyperactivity and insomnia were somewhat reduced.
Removing casein allowed me to begin making eye-contact with people, and I have begun noticing facial expressions. It also makes it harder for me to escape into my own world (I'm not so happy with this one, but it does make it easier to concentrate).Going gluten free reduced my intestinal problems.I only removed soy a couple of months ago, but it has a protein similar to gluten and casein, and I'm reactive to both of these, so I'll see what happens and update when I have reintroduced soy.
I suggest at least removing the artificials for ALL children, not just those with disorders or disabilities. One child diagnosed with autism whose mother removed just the artificials gained over a years worth of language in only 2 weeks. And she wasn't receiving speech therapy at the time.
As for the supplements, I take several.I can tell you that several speech therapists I know recommend that any child with severe articulation problems, apraxia/dyspraxia should take EFA - Essential Fatty Acids, particularly Omega 3s found in fish oil or evening primrose oil.It makes sense to go with a brand that has been laboratory tested and found free of mercury and other contaminants, particularly since so many people on the autism spectrum may be chemically sensitive.
The artificials seem to be the easiest first step. And it may encourage you to remove these if you know that artificial colors (FD&C Red #40, Blue #1, Yellow #5/6, etc.) are petrochemicals. That is, these are distillates of raw oil that are left over when they purify out gasoline.Want to bring your child to the gas station and fill them up with your car? That is essentially what you are doing when you give them meals full of these substances.SUSPECT ANYTHING BRIGHTLY OR DARKLY COLORED, particularly candies and processed foods.
As for sugar being the problem, what are you getting your sugar from?Red licorice sticks, lollipops, hard candies, fruit loops, chocolate bars, soda pop... all of which also contain artificial colors or flavors, unless you are careful to buy an all-natural brand. ... Read more

Ten years on and I still think this is the best when it comes to running nutrition and diets. The energy bars beat any Powerbar in my book, and the energy drinks and simple and useful. I use it from time to time to re-evaluate my diet based on how much I'm running. Love to see it updated!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very basic & Ignores Contemporary sport Science Research Findings
Neither the text of this book, nor the "About the Authors" section, demonstrates any background specific to sport science or athletic training. The book does contain a very readable and pleasant introduction to general nutrition and exercise, with many excellent illustrations, and is a good book for school libraries and health classes.

Unfortunately I do not feel that this book lives up to it's title, and will probably not be usefully to competitive athletes at any level or fitness serious adults.

For personal trainers, coaches, and athletes with some biology or chemistry foundation I would strongly recommend "Sport Nutrition: An Introduction to Energy Production and Performance" by A. Jeukendrup & M. Gleeson, which is a very up to date (published 2004), comprehensive, and peer reviewed treatment of the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nutrient information
The purchase of the second edition of this guide was made because my first edition was falling apart and held together by elastic bands. The second edition includes many of the foods from organic food stores and medical nutritionals in addition to fresh, anned, frozen and dried foods. The portion size is given in amounts usually used and in quantities that are geared toward those with scales or bulk measures like cup portion or spoon size.As a diebetic knowing the nutrititional values of the foods in my diet is important. The introduction is easy to understasnd and to help guide daily food intake wisely. My only complaint is that the sugar level of foods is not included while that number is included in the carbohydrate value it is not the same amount and would be much more helpful in managing my disease.

For anyone trying to track calories, carbs, salt intake or any dietary issue, this is the MUST HAVE book! My husband suffers from elevated blood pressure (prehypertension), and we are successfully using this book to reduce it! We find it makes shopping for low-sodium products much easier than standing in grocery aisles reading every can, carton, package for its sodium content. This book has so much information on the foods we eat (and brands), that one won't need any other guide! Great book.
