Product Description
Advance Athletic Achievement Naturally

Extensively updated with all chapters rewritten and double the information and references, Amino Acids and Proteins for the Athlete: The Anabolic Edge, Second Edition reflects the nearly exponential increase in data and knowledge in the past few years regarding the use of amino acids and proteins to enhance athletic performance.

This groundbreaking book is written by physician Mauro Di Pasquale, two-time Pan American, two-time North American, and eight-time Canadian Powerlifting Champion. Dr. Di Pasquale served as an advisor to the World Wrestling and World Bodybuilding Federations, has written for numerous health and bodybuilding publications, and has published several books and newsletters on sports-related issues. In this volume, he imparts his scientific knowledge as well as lessons learned from his own athletic achievement to give professional and recreational athletes the tools they need to improve performance using nutrition and nutritional supplements as alternatives to drug use.

The book begins with a brief review of energy and protein metabolism before describing the positive impact of supplementation on athletic performance, health, disease, and longevity. It reveals the actions of protein and amino acid supplements on muscle size and strength and energy metabolism as well as the role of specific amino acid supplements.

The second part of the book, the practical how-to section, Naturally Anabolic, advises the athlete on ways to achieve maximum progress while avoiding the use of anabolic drugs. It provides the inside scoop on how to use nutrition to manipulate anabolic hormones naturally, and how to lose body fat without sacrificing muscle. The final chapter reveals the secrets of powerful nutritional supplements that can enhance an athlete’s performance. By following Dr. Di Pasquale’s time-tested advice, athletes will get the inside edge over the competition and take their achievement to the next level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for any kind of Fitness Performance!!!
I can go on and on of how incredible this book is but I will make this review short. This book covers all areas of using proper nutrition to improve athletic performance and cosmetic looks. The author is extremely credentialed being a physician and world champion in power lifting. I've seen a picture of him when he was forty and he was muscular and ripped to the bone so he does walk the walk. Also I have used his diet and have seen incredible results. Parts of the book can become a little complex but take your time and re-read. In short, this book is super-packed with knowledge, not to mention five thousand references which shows how the author put his heart and soul into this book for us to not only enjoy reading but to help us go beyond your aspiration of what ever fitness goal we have in mind. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who wants to drastically improve in sports and fitness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Just What I Was Looking For.
This is a terrific book. Yes, it's technical, but if you managed to get through moderately advanced High School science courses, or if you hacked college, don't sweat it, you'll get it. Di Pasquale--an M.D.--gives much in-depth, detailed information on the metabolism, physiological effects of, and potential for excercise enhancement of amino acids, proteins, and their effect on body hormones. Di Pasquale knows that the reader wants to apply the information to athletic performance. He talks about both anaerobic and aerobic excercise, but since he is a former powerlifting champion, he zeroes in on anaerobic excercise (e.g., bodybuilding, powerlifting), which is very refreshing. You also get summary detail toward the end of the book that gives sample supplement doses and critical timing of dosing to maximize results. Di Pasquale also weighs in on other non-amino acid supplements that affect anabolism (or purport to) such as Pyruvate, HMB, etc. (There's no info on steroids, so forget about that.) Overall a terrific advance for bodybuilders and worth it if you want to get away from all the hype and zero in on some science. This book is for the thinking bodybuider. Naturals, in particular, have much to gain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
This book, while a bit technical, is not beyond the understanding ofanyone with even the slightest knowledge of nutrition. It is comprehensive, well documented, and offers a total explanation about how protein and aminoacids interact with exercise to promote muscular development. It is thebest book on the subject in current existence.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mediocre book without a Phd in the sciences
This book had good points and bad points.some of the information contained was applicable for self educated bodybuilders but unfortunately for the most part their was a plethora of technical information that is difficultto comprehend.I have the upmost admiration for mauro di pasquale but i feelthis book was written with medical practitioners in mind and not averagebodybuilders

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Athletes Wanting That Extra Edge
Not just what to take but how and when to take it. You must learn when and how to take supplements for them to benifit you. ... Read more

Product Description
Food choices and eating habits are learned from many sources. The school environment plays a significant role in teaching and modeling health behaviors. For some children, foods consumed at school can provide a major portion of their daily nutrient intake. Foods and beverages consumed at school can come from two major sources: federally funded programs that include the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), the School Breakfast Program (SBP), and after-school snacks and; competitive sources that include vending machines, 'a la carte' sales in the school cafeteria, or school stores and snack bars. Foods and beverages sold at school outside of the federally reimbursable school nutrition programs are referred to as "competitive foods" because they compete with the traditional school lunch as a nutrition source. There are important concerns about the contribution of nutrients and total calories from competitive foods to the daily diets of school-age children and adolescents."Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools" offers both reviews and recommendations about appropriate nutrition standards and guidance for the sale, content, and consumption of foods and beverages at school, with attention given to foods and beverages offered in competition with federally reimbursable meals and snacks. It is sure to be an invaluable resource to parents, federal and state government agencies, educators and schools, health care professionals, food manufacturers, industry trade groups, media, and those involved in consumer advocacy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Speedy shipping!
I ordered this book for a class I am taking and it got here in just a few days! The book itself is helpful so far, lots of great info! Certainly not a book I would choose for leisure reading!!haha! But great for a class that you have to take!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book for athletes and trainers
I had to use this book in a class for Sports Nutrition. It is a great reference book (ie RDA for vitamins and minerals) and is valuable for anyone that is an athlete or works with athletes. I found it to be a little repetitive and the case studies were a little too typical to be helpful. In either case, it's easy to read and it is fairly easy to navigate as a reference manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Your Horse
Learn how to feed your horse properly and avoid health problems because of mindless feeding practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book to buy for horse nutrition!
I've been involved with horses since 1970.A lot of books have come and gone that claim to teach you everything you need to know about feeding your horse correctly, but getting through them is a challenge. This book is clear, easy reading. It covers feeds normally fed to horses in the US, and it gives good practical advice.Hay Days will not collect dust on your bookshelf - you'll be referring to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes horse nutrition simple.
This is an excellent book on horse nutrition. It makes nutrition easy to understand and information is presented in an easy to read format.Nutrition concepts (such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, ATP, enzmymes, minerals, vitamins, etc.) and how they are metabolized by the horse are explained. Also included is a chapter dedicated to MSM, DMG, Chondroitin Sulfates, Glucosamine, and Bromelain. The book details how much protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, etc. your type of horse needs (broken down into maintenance horse, pregnancy, lactating, growing, performance, or stallion) and how your horse's health, care and general condition contribute to his ability to absorb these nutrients. Each chapter includes charts highlighting the information presented.Additionally, at the end of the book are charts and formulas to help you determine exactly how much your horse needs of each nutrient and how much he is currently receiving in his diet. They were very easy to use, and this will allow you to see where his diet is deficient. This is a great book for the horse owner who is interested in horse nutrition, wants to optimize what he is feeding his horse, and is curious as to the benefits (or not) of all those supplements on the market.

While you can purchase either the paperback or hardcover here on amazon, if you go to the publisher (www.pixyjackpress.com), the author will sign the book for you. It's a nice touch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank heavens--no hocus pocus!
This book offers a very simple, concise look at feeding horses, with an emphasis on SIMPLE.Forage is kept as the cornerstone of the equine diet, and a simple look at protein and mineral requirements is given.Writtenwith U.S. horseowners in mind, this book differs from many books based inthe UK, where grain types are much different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining to read, even for a "city girl".
Rex Ewing captures the reader's interest easily with his relaxed writing style. He makes horse nutrition sound simple and there isn't a lot of confusing technical terms. A straight-to-the-point book. ... Read more

Product Description

The Science of Nutrition, Second Edition is uniquely organized using an applied approach, which organizes vitamins and minerals based on their functions and effects on the body. This applied approach is most evident in the functional organization of the micronutrient (vitamin and mineral) chapters. Rather than requiring you to memorize all the vitamins and minerals and their characteristics, the authors present them based on their functions (like fluid and electrolyte balance, antioxidant function, bone health, energy metabolism, and blood and immunity health), so that you can understand their effects on the body.

The Second Edition adds new learning aids to further help you learn and apply the material. Additionally, learning aids have been expanded, including a new version of MyDietAnalysis, available in both online and CD-ROM formats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book.
I had to get this book for my nutrition class, but I actually enjoyed reading it. It's a great beginner textbook with many useful tools that's easy to understand. I would recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A not so scientific overview of nutrition
Nutrition is a pretty complicated new science. To get a good grasp, you need solid background on anatomny, physiology, chemistry, biochemistry and cellular biology. This book is designed for someone that has none of these backgrounds, yet tries to achieve comprehension in too high a level. The student is left with only a vague notion of what is going on. It does a better job at tacking the social aspects of nutrition, such as eating habits, weight management, etc. But this is hardely the scientific information I was looking to gain from a book titled "The science of nutrition". The entire book summed up begins and ends with "eat lots of fruits and veggies, reduce saturated fatty acids, and excercise regularly". But we already knew that, didn't we? The book is too complicated to be an intro book, and too vague to be of real academic merit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Delivery!
The delivery was relatively quick but the book was a little scratched up, but it's still in acceptable condition

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Nutrition Great Chemistry
Great book for any nutrition class with an in depth analysis of the chemicals associated with food and how it is digested/used in the body.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS if you are DIABETIC
This has absolutely zero information for diabetics. No total carbs, no sugars, etc.It is worthless to someone who wants to know about anything other than fat or sodium content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Food on the Go
Love this book. I keep it in my car so I'll have it when we eat out/go through drive-throughs.I just wish it had every eatery in it.Handy to have with me.Got one for my daughter and daughter-in-law.

4-0 out of 5 stars Different kind of scary read
There are books that amuse and a few that shock. But if you partake of fast food in any of its forms - whether a burger joint or upscale chain café - get ready to be dumbfounded. The Stop & Go Fast Food Nutrition Guide by Steven Aldana, Ph.D, shows calories, fat (split into various categories), sodium, and dietary fiber of a wide range of the snacks, meals, and drinks you could find at close to 70 chains ranging from A&W to White Castle. Entries are color-coded in a green, yellow, and red motif to show relative healthiness of of the chow.

Let's take an example or two. Like the Starbucks apple fritter? That's 790 calories, with 37 milligrams of fat and a whopping 830 milligrams of sodium. Death on a dish. A plain old 16 ounce latté? That's a grande at 260 calories. How about a Hardee's Big Country Breakfast Platter with country steak? Just 1150 calories, 455 milligrams of cholesterol, and a completely astounding 2660 milligrams - otherwise known as almost 2.7 grams - of sodium. Personally, I'd double check the numbers for the green, yellow, and red coding: a Subway sweet onion chicken teriyaki 6-inch sub may have only 5 milligrams of fat and 370 calories, but it's got 1220 milligrams of sodium.

Take it with you when you're out and get rid of some weight, because you'll surely lose your appetite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Fast Food!
This is a great guide.I keep it in the car and have discovered some great items with much better nutrition that I never would have tried otherwise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you travel a lot
This book is a great quick guide for various fast food restaurants that allows you to easily pick the items that have acceptable levels of fat, sodium and calories.I travel a great deal and too often end up at a fast food place.I thought I had figured out the calories and fat in various foods such as the Frisco Melt at Steak & Shake.Boy, was I WRONG.This book is now a permanent resident of my car. ...
