Extractions: DIVE AND DISCOVER: Expeditions to the Seafloor With the wind at only 10-13 knots and the seas calm, it was a wonderful day to be working at sea. It is especially nice for those of us who live on the East Coast of the US where we hear that it is freezing and has snowed the past few days. Most of us are wearing shorts and t-shirts. We have seen several pods of pilot whales since we left Guaymas. Each day some of the other local whales visit us. This area is a famous breeding ground for California gray whales. From January to April, these whales travel south from the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska to Baja California in order to mate and give birth. A fin whale surfaces near the Avon in the Gulf of California. Today, Susan, Dan, Steve, and "Fast" Ed Popowitz (the boat driver) set out in the Avon to identify some of the larger whales. We brought a small hydrophone to record whale sounds. A hydrophone is a microphone that is designed to record sounds while underwater. We got close enough to one of the big whales to identify it as a fin whale, but the whale didn't feel like talking to us. We'll continue our attempts to record whale sounds over the next few days. Check back to see if we're successful! The routines on the ship are now pretty much established. All the scientists and students know their jobs and have settled into the rhythm of shipboard life. The biologists and microbiologists worked late last night cutting up and photographing the different worms, preserving samples in different chemicals for future analysis back on shore, and freezing other samples for future genetic analysis. The chemists prepared the electrodes for the chemical sensors and installed the science equipment on Alvin.

Extractions: Oceanographers study all aspects of the seas. That's a big topic, too much for one person! There are subgroups of oceanographers - four main ones in all. Some focus on the ocean's physical processes such as currents or interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere. Some study the chemistry of seawater, analyzing its components and properties. Others study the ocean's biology, and how oceanic conditions control the distribution and abundance of marine organisms. Still others focus on the geology of the ocean floor from the coastline to the abyssal plains. How Do We Study the Ocean? The "color" of the ocean is determined by the interactions of incident light with substances or particles present in the water. The most significant constituents are free-floating photosynthetic organisms (phytoplankton) and inorganic particulates. Phytoplankton contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light at blue and red wavelengths and transmits in the green. Particulate matter can reflect and absorb light, which reduces the clarity (light transmission) of the water. Substances dissolved in water can also affect its color.

Extractions: University of Rhode Island Most of the efforts to determine how estuaries respond to nutrient enrichment have been confined to relatively deeper and/or muddier river mouth estuaries. However, much of the Atlantic coast from Cape Cod to Cape Fear, as well as parts of the Florida coast and almost all of the Gulf Coast is characterized by a different type of coastal system, called by various names, including lagoon, inland bay, and salt pond. These more complex shallow systems are now facing increasing nutrient enrichment from agriculture and suburban housing development with associated on-site sewage disposal systems and ground water nitrogen enrichment. A team of scientists at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) have focused their research on these very shallow lagoon type estuaries to determine if there are predictable patterns of response to nutrient enrichment in these more complex systems. The research team includes biological oceanographer Dr. Scott Nixon, research associates Betty Buckley and Steven Granger, and recent Ph.D. graduate Joanne Bintz. According to a recent article in the journal Human and Ecological Risk Assessment, the scientific team summarized data from 30 systems with mean depths ranging from 1-12 feet and water residence times from .3-100 days. In addition the team designed and built a coastal lagoon mesocosm facility where they replicated and controlled nutrient inputs, mixing rates, and water resident time. Fed by water from Narragansett Bay, the mesocosms had a variety of typical coastal lagoon organisms added to them, in addition to the plankton that enter with the bay water and the animals contained in the sediment.

But before space travel and the inventio of satellites, it was very hard to actually observe the oceans on such a large scale. Pictures of the global ocean from space have given oceanographers important information about ocean currents, temperatures, and other properties. Satellites collect information around the clock and feed it back to earth and individual laboratories and classrooms in real time. This innovation has revolutionized oceanography and given researchers important information about weather and climate, circulation, and environmental problems, such as global warming, global circulation, the world's fisheries decline, and harmful algal blooms. Perhaps more than any other group of oceanographers, physical oceanographers have benefited from satellite technology. Because they study the movement of the oceans and the forces that cause motion, such as winds, waves, and tides, they must look at the ocean from a "big picture" perspective. Shipboard measurements and the development of instruments such as computer programmable buoys that can be left at sea for long periods of time were huge advances for the field of physical oceanography and continue to be important tools, but satellites offer perspectives that early oceanographers may never have dreamed of. Imagine the discoveries Benjamin Franklin, the first person to plot the course of the Gulf Stream, could have made if he'd had access to satellite data!
