Extractions: In both printed CA Issues and Indexes and computer-readable services, certain abbreviations and acronyms are automatically generated for terms in the abstract text, the keyword phrases, and the text modifying phrases for index entries. Most of these abbreviations have been used prior to 1982. Users of computer-readable services need to know these standard abbreviations and acronyms in order to be able to use them in search profiles and identify them in text. In this document, automatically generated abbreviations and acronyms in CAS publications and services are arranged in three lists. To guide users to abbreviations they need to include in their search profiles, Listing A is arranged in the alphabetical order of the full terms which are abbreviated. Do no use periods when searching CAS abbreviations or acronyms online. To provide explanation of abbreviations encountered in text, Listing B is arranged in the alphabetical order of abbreviations and acronyms.

Coral Reef Bleaching Proc. assoc. Mar. Lab. Limnology and oceanography 3413311335. Kushmaro A, LoyaY, Fine M, Rosenberg E (1996) Bacterial infection and coral bleaching. http://www.marinebiology.org/coralbleaching.htm
Extractions: Director, Odyssey Expeditions Coral reef bleaching, the whitening of diverse invertebrate taxa, results from the loss of symbiotic zooxantheallae and/or a reduction in photosynthetic pigment concentrations in zooxanthellae residing within scleractinian corals. Coral reef bleaching is caused by various anthropogenic and natural variations in the reef environment including sea temperature, solar irradiance, sedimentation, xenobiotics, subaerial exposure, inorganic nutrients, freshwater dilution, and epizootics. Coral bleaching events have been increasing in both frequency and extent worldwide in the past 20 years. Global climate change may play a role in the increase in coral bleaching events, and could cause the destruction of major reef tracts and the extinction of many coral species. Introduction Coral reefs are found in circumtropical shallow tropical waters along the shores of islands and continents. The reef substrate is mainly composed of calcium carbonate from living and dead scleractinian corals. Many other invertebrates, vertebrates, and plants live in close association to the scleractinian corals, with tight resource coupling and recycling, allowing coral reefs to have extremely high productivity and biodiversity, such that they are referred to as the Tropical Rainforests of the Oceans. Corals live in very nutrient poor waters and have certain zones of tolerance to water temperature, salinity, UV radiation, opacity, and nutrient quantities.

BIO Assoc. Newsletter - July, 2002 in the summer of 2000 when the Bedford Institute of oceanography's Archives Researcher consultthe following web page http//www.friendsamis.org/fact22.html http://www.bedfordbasin.ca/NewsLtrs/16_JUL22/016newJUL22.html
Extractions: THE DREAM, THE REALITY, THE FUTURE On the other hand, pessimists can take this as evidence of a poor selection of person to replace the immediate Past President, Dale Buckley, one of the founders of our young organization, but I suspect that's a myopic way of looking at things. It seems to me that Dale's decision to look outside of the existing Executive for his replacement was a good one, looking for fresh input from the general membership. Obviously, it's far too early to determine the worth of that approach. Instead, let me offer some thoughts based upon my observations of almost three years as a regular member of the BIO-OA and the past nine months as a member of its executive body. The start for me, personally, was applause for the concept and initiation of a 'BIO-Oceans Association'. What an incredible idea! Does a more worthy tribute exist to honour the Institute and its original founders than this? I think not, particularly when reviewing the grand role that BIO has played in the development of the ocean sciences, both nationally and internationally, and its contribution worldwide. But equally significant, is the opportunity that BIO provided to each and every one of us during our tenure, past and present, to participate and excel as workers in our various roles. In fact, the time has come to jump forward with both feet to further identify what we can do to repay the Institute for what it has given to us over the years and what it represents to Canadians everywhere. A 'jump' that can be enjoyable as well as self-satisfying.
BIO Assoc. Newsletter - April, 2002 jobs, people whose contributions belie their place on the orgchart; Peter Resourcesout of the world renowned Bedford Institute of oceanography in Dartmouth http://www.bedfordbasin.ca/NewsLtrs/15_APR22/015newAPR22.html
Extractions: NEWSLETTER Issue 15 - April 2002 It is difficult to comprehend that two years have passed since I assumed the presidency of BIO-OA. My perspective is that this is the end of the second chapter in a long and enjoyable book. A review of this chapter reveals that we have made considerable progress in developing our character and plotting our course. Over the past two years we have made some considerable progress in raising interest in preserving historical aspects of BIO. We now have the beginnings of a paper archive in the library, thanks in large part to Carole Broome and other library staff. The library now has an Archivist/ Librarian, Marilynn Rudi. We also have a desk and "office" that can be used for reviewing and cataloguing photographs that are of historical interest to BIO. Under Mike Gorveatt's supervision, an equipment or hardware archive storage area has been established and will be maintained by Bruce Wile (NRCan). On the social calendar we note that we had some great success in having a number of members participate in the canal boat tour in England (2000), and we have found that a good number of members enjoy our summer picnic gatherings. We also note that our lectures with wine and cheese at BIO during the winter have been well attended. Establishment of the Beluga Recognition Award, and presentation of the first award to Roger Belanger in 2001 was a highlight. Stay tuned: there are more to come. We are most pleased that many of our members and the current staff of BIO have very positively endorsed this award and the criteria for selection of the recipients.

CBE Homepage Center for Biofilm Engineering Volume 2, Issue 4 What's New Dr. Somkiet Techkanjaruk, a post-doc working with Dr. Gill Geesey under support from the NABIR Program of the Department of Energy has successfully genetically engineered the sulfate-reducing bacterium, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans , to constitutively express green fluorescent protein, making it possible to detect individual cells of this strain and follow non-destructively, in real time, their growth and associations with other bacterial populations in biofilms. Somkiet has also developed a fluorescent oligonucleotide probe that reports the synthesis of mRNA for the dissimilatory sulfite reductase enzyme in individual cells of D. desulfuricans . These molecular tools should offer new opportunities to evaluate the role of sulfur-reducing bacteria in corrosion reactions on metal surfaces. Ace Baty, a Microbiology Ph.D. candidate working with Dr. Gill Geesey, through funding provided by the Biological Oceanography Program of NSF, has developed a bioreactor that permits the quantitative evaluation of bacterial detachment from biofilms. Ace's results to date reveal that in low nutrient environments, cells growing on surfaces contribute the vast majority of cells suspended in the bulk aqueous phase. Ace's data also demonstrates the relationship between the growth rate of cells on a surface and the rate of cell detachment.
