Extractions: September 1999 The NASA Glenn Research Center Learning Technologies Project (Glenn LTP) is dedicated to supporting educational excellence in mathematics, science, and technology in grades K-12. A primary goal of the project is to research and assist in the development of supplementary educational materials. The Glenn LTP involves teachers in the development of the educational materials; teachers and students are involved in field tests. Evaluation forms provide feedback on the usefulness, quality, and appeal of the materials, along with recommendations for improvement. During the months of June, July, and August 1998, the Glenn LTP co-sponsored three teacher professional development workshops to foster increased proficiency and use of computer technology within K-12 schools. Workshop participants created Web-based activities for K-12 classrooms using computer applications taught in the workshops. The 20 teachers created 70 Web-based activities for use with Glenn LTP educational products ( FoilSim and the Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics ) or to align with the history or missions of NASA Glenn Research Center. THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Just as "it takes a village to raise a child," the support of the whole community helps prepare children for the complex choices they must make in a changing world. This Digest looks at how career educators and counselors involve business, community agencies, churches, and others in assisting students with the process of shaping their life careers. CAREER EDUCATION IN MANY FORMS Official federal support for career education began in 1974; although funding intensity has varied over the subsequent 20 plus years, career education continues to receive emphasis in the nation's schools. The most recent programs included under the umbrella of "career education" are titled "school-to-work" and "tech prep," programs that are receiving generous federal appropriations for 1996-97 (Hoyt 1996). School-to-work programs, which include tech prep programs, are characterized by their focus on bridging the gap between school and work. They draw upon education and business collaboration, and partnerships between education and other parts of society. They are designed to provide "school-based learning, work-based learning, and activities to connect the two" (Wickwire 1995, p. 7); in this way, they engage the community in the career education and development of youth. The coordinated support network promoted in school-to-work programs is "linked to school and relies on parents, mentors, employers, youth advocates, and social service agencies to assist youth" (Rochester City School District 1994, p. 1).

Extractions: kkelley@osc.edu K-12 Distance Learning Introduction The Chillicothe Telephone Company will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1995. To celebrate this milestone, the company has decided to present a gift to the communities it serves. The company has agreed to make available, at no cost, the use of advanced, broad band fiber optic telecommunications facilities to connect high schools for educational purposes. The intention is to interconnect all Ross County high schools, Chillicothe High School, Pickaway-Ross Vocational Center, Pickaway County Schools serviced by Pickaway-Ross JVSD, and Ohio University-Chillicothe and have them all using the network by the beginning of the 1995-96 school year. We intend to have at least two county high schools, the vocational school and Chillicothe High School interconnected by the beginning of the 1992-93 school year. Other high schools will be added as construction is completed. The network will work in conjunction with the Chillicothe Telephone Company's public telecommunications network and will have connection with other educational networks. The network will establish an interactive two-way video distance learning environment and a connection to international computer networks. The project will enhance present curriculum by allowing schools to share resources. Schools will also become regional learning centers.
