2002 Ohio Reading Program Promoting To Schools If personal visits are impossible, investigate the possibility of making a videotapeto introduce the theme to classrooms and/or school media centers. http://winslo.state.oh.us/services/LPD/promote_schls.html
Extractions: Teachers want their students to return in the fall with their reading skills intact or improved. They are your natural allies as you work on attracting children to reading programs at the public library. Enlist their natural support with promotion in as many ways as possible. One of the best ways to promote library programs and good school/public library relations is to arrange to visit all, or as many as you can, of the elementary/middle schools in your area. If you are targeting young adults, consider sending information to be put on daily announcements. Once you've scheduled your programs and have promotional materials in hand, contact the school district's administrative office and the administrative offices of all public, parochial and private schools. Ask permission to promote the library program in each elementary school in the library's service area. Then schedule individual visits during the last few weeks of classes through principals, teachers, or school librarians. Try making a visual impact by wearing something related to the theme. Give students information about the program to take home and make sure posters will be prominently displayed at the school. Glean ideas from promotional book talks from

Media Contact Boca Raton, FL, September 18, 2000 "Since INFOhio first made SIRS Discoverer Deluxe available to Ohio schools in October 1999, the number of full-text articles retrieved by Ohio students and teachers has jumped five-fold, from around 200,000 to more than one million per year," said Theresa M. Fredericka, Executive Director of INFOhio. "This speaks both of the need for current information that SIRS provides, as well as the increased sophistication of students and teachers to make use of current information technologies." Statistics compiled by INFOhio staff show that most of this increased use is attributable to SIRS Discoverer Deluxe. In addition to school use in classrooms, library/media centers, offices, and computer labs, INFOhio has licensed SIRS Discoverer Deluxe for home use by students and teachers. A user name and password, available from school librarians and technology coordinators, enable any student or teacher with home Internet access to continue using the reference database after school hours. "INFOhio is redefining the school library," Fredericka stressed. "It is no longer limited to a room within the school. The school library is now wherever a patron can access the Internet."
School Libraries grants to weed their collections, most media centers in the staffed by fulltime, certified media specialists many as 30 percent of ohio school districts spend http://reed.senate.gov/schoollibraries/plaindealer.htm
Extractions: by Tom Brazaitis; Plain Dealer Bureau Many school libraries have been left behind in the information rush at the start of the 21st century, their shelves stocked with tattered, outdated volumes, their collections cataloged on cards rather than computers, their operations in the hands of a gym teacher or volunteer rather than a trained librarian. As a result, practically every school librarian has heard an anecdote or can tell one from personal experience about finding a book on the shelves predicting, decades after the fact, that some day a man may walk on the moon. Or of a book on computer science describing a long-extinct computer "so big it fills a room the size of a basketball court." Or a book that talks about Premier Nikita Khrushchev as if he were still in charge of the Soviet Union - as if there still was a Soviet Union. Federal support for school libraries has plummeted since 1981, when money previously earmarked for books and other materials was lumped into a block grant that could be used for other school needs.
