Extractions: Both within the library and through its electronic extension, students and staff should have the necessary resources to understand a task or problem, apply information-seeking strategies, locate sources and information within those sources, use and organize the information, and present and evaluate the result. Although books are still the heart of any library, today's school library must also include a variety of electronic resources in order to accomplish its mission. Danville High School, a small rural school counted among the low wealth schools in Ohio, has endeavored to provide its students with the resources they require in order to learn well. The Danville Elementary/Middle School Library Our exciting new development has been the creation of a brand new library facility for the elementary and junior high students. As a result of community financial support through a building levy and funding through the Ohio School Facilities Commission, Danville was able to build a new elementary and middle school building and renovate the existing primary building. New library and media center opened in the fall of 2002 and serves students in grades K-8. It is fully automated and includes a new computer lab as well as computer access within the main library.

ERIC Digest: Libraries For The National Education Goals Highlights The Reuben McMillan Free Library Association (Youngstown, ohio) conductsprograms on ethnic Students use the school library media center to http://readyweb.crc.uiuc.edu/library/1992/brnnan92.html
Extractions: T his digest is based on Libraries for the National Education Goals, by Barbara K. Stripling. By the year 2000, it is envisioned that our nation will have accomplished the six National Education Goals adopted in 1990 by the President and the governors of the United States. Since libraries are the only educational system available to everyone, regardless of age or affiliation, it is logical to turn to our nation's libraries to help to achieve these goals. To demonstrate the critical role libraries can and do play in support of the national education initiatives, an extensive literature review and analysis was undertaken (Stripling, 1992). This digest highlights the findings of that review. GOAL ONE: BY THE YEAR 2000, ALL CHILDREN IN AMERICA WILL START SCHOOL READY TO LEARN. Experts predict that fifty percent of a child's intellectual development occurs before the age of four. If this is true, then it is crucial that preschoolers receive high quality care. Both public and school libraries provide activities, services, and materials to facilitate early language acquisition and reading readiness in preschool children. Highlights: The Pittsburgh Public Library's Beginning with Books project reached disadvantaged families in places around the community. They began by distributing packets to preschoolers in health clinic waiting rooms, and later expanded to social services centers, shelters, housing developments, and day care centers.
