    Extractions: Right Near Sallisaw Right Near Sallisaw Arthur Krim Questions of the Joad family origins in Sallisaw, Oklahoma have been raised since The Grapes of Wrath was first published. Why did John Steinbeck select this obscure Ozark town on the Arkansas border for his Dust Bowl saga, and thereby forever mark Sallisaw with the Joads and the travails of the Depression? Did Steinbeck learn of Sallisaw from Tom Collins at the Arvin Resettlement Camp or visit the town specifically on his summer 1937 trip on U.S. 66 back from Chicago? These questions are resolved in part by considering Steinbeck's knowledge of Oklahoma and his contacts with Dust Bowl migrants before writing "The Oklahomans" in 1937; his contacts with photographer Dorothea Lange; and his interviews with California labor strikers and the national news of Pretty Boy Floyd during 1934. Steinbeck's earliest contact with an Oklahoma migrant who might have known of Sallisaw was probably with Cicil McKiddy, a labor organizer in the cotton strike of 1933, and a presumed model for Tom Joad. According to his nephew, McKiddy arrived in California in 1929 with his family and had been active in agricultural labor organization from the early years of the Depression. His nephew, Roy Hammet of Madera, California, determined the McKiddy origins in Oklahoma around Okemah, McComb, and Wewoka, in the central part of the state around Shawnee.

He edited the Journal until his retirement in 1996 when the editorship was assumed by Lou Seig at Oklahoma State University (OSU). In June 2002, Alyson Greiner became the editor. From its inception, the Journal was published by the Popular Press at BGSU. The closing of the press was announced in November of 2001; publication was transferred to the Geography Department at OSU in December; and the JCG Press was created. Moving of publication to OSU has helped to speed up the process of production. The Editorial Staff is committed to producing a high quality, refereed professional geography journal. Production is now back on schedule and submission of manuscripts is encouraged.

Highest elevation is 4,973 feet above sea level at the Black Mesa in the northwestern corner of the area known as the Panhandle; lowest, 287 feet, is near Idabel in the extreme southeast. Approximately 24% of the state’s total area is forested, principally the region bordering Missouri and Arkansas. Although part of the Great Plains, Oklahoma has four mountain ranges: the Ouachita in the southeast, the Ozark Plateau in the northeast, the Arbuckle in the south central part of the state, and the Wichita in the southwest. Throughout the northwest and the Panhandle are sudden outcrops of sandstone and gypsum, sharp ravines and stark hills. In the north central region are several salt flats. Largest is the Great Salt Plains, covering about 25 miles near Cherokee. The state’s major rivers are the Arkansas and the Red; the Red River forms the state’s southern boundary with Texas. Other large streams, all flowing into either the Arkansas or the Red, are the Illinois, Grand (or Neosho), Verdigris, Poteau, Canadian, Cimarron, Salt Fork of the Arkansas, and the Washita. On most of the larger rivers, great lakes ranging in size from 890 acres to over 102,500 acres, have been impounded. Largest of more than 60 such reservoirs are Eufaula, Texoma, Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, Fort Gibson, Oologah, Kerr, Pine Creek, Broken Bow, Tenkiller, Hudson, Keystone, Foss, Fort Cobb and Great Salt Plains.

    Extractions: OKAGE'S two-day Geography of Oklahoma was held June 19-20 in the Sarkeys' Energy Center on the University of Oklahoma campus. Dr. Marvin Baker, geography professor, and Jeanie Sisson, OKAGE Teacher Consultant and a fourth grade teacher in the Moore Public Schools, led the workshop. Teachers participating in the workshop represented schools in Woodward, Moore, Noble, Tulsa, Morris, Watonga, Ada, Taloga, Norman, Orlando, and Tulsa. After Jeanie involved participants in a five themes activity centered around the geography of Oklahoma, Dr. Baker discussed geographic principles that provided the foundation for additional activities and lectures related to Oklahoma's geography. Participants created elevation maps, graphed urban and rural population from 1910 to 1990, added landforms and bodies of water to Oklahoma-shaped cookies, and discussed a wall-sized picture graph showing the growth of the Moore School District. Between the activities, Dr. Baker lectured on the physical, economic, and cultural geography as well as the population and settlement patterns in Oklahoma. He concluded with a discussion about Oklahoma and its role in the United States. He focused on the distinction between growth and development, the influence of surrounding states, the possibilities of what we want to become, and the steps that will shape our future.
