Extractions: Exactly when they started is not known, but the first written records date from 776BC, and the games continued until they were banned by a decree of the Roman Emperor Theodore I, "the Great", in 393AD So the last games held were in 389AD, which meant the games had been held 293 times (at least). The actual events in the games varied from time to time, but mainly were to do with running, wrestling, boxing and chariot racing. In those games there was interest only in who won, and the winner was awarded an olive wreath. Women were not admitted to the games, either as competitors or spectators. Revival Ernst Curtius, a German archaeologist, did a lot of excavation work at Olympia and, presumably inspired by that, in 1852 suggested that the Olympic Games should be revived. This idea was well-received by many and was finally taken up by Baron Pierre de Courbertin and, at his instigation, in Paris on 23 June 1894, a committee agreed to re-establish the Olympic Games, with a first meeting to be held at Athens in 1896 and every 4 years thereafter. Apart from the war years when no games were held, this has been kept up. In the ancient games, wars were suspended in order to allow the games to continue. The early games of the modern Olympics were of varied quality and success, with many highlights and low points. There were several calls for the games to be discontinued at various times but they always managed to keep going and, once they were re-established in 1948 (after a 12-year break), their future seemed assured. However, since that time they have become subject to much political action (boycotts and terrorism) so that it is not inconceivable that the future might see them discontinued or modified in some way.

In time, earthquakes and floods buried the site beneath about 20 feet of soil. Happily, the memory and the ideals of the Greek Olympic organisation did not crumble with the ruins of Olympia. In the 19th century, archaeologist began excavating the site of the temple of Zeus, and between 1875 and 1881 most of the Olympia complex was uncovered. With the growing interest in sports of all kinds in the 19th Century, it was, perhaps, inevitable that the ideals of the Greek Olympic Games should be revived. The credit for this belongs to the Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937). He thought that at least one reason for the flowering of Greece during the 'Golden Age' was sport and the ideals of Olympic games. Further nothing could be lost - and a great deal gained - by bringing together the youth of the world in a friendly competition. The new Olympic Games would be a period of concord in which all differences of status, religion, politics and race would be forgotten was the motto.

Extractions: The modern Olympics got off to a shaky start. The first Games, held in Athens in 1896, had only 14 nations and 311 competitors (230 of which were from Greece). Still, for Pierre de Coubertin, a young baron from France it was the beginning of a dream started nearly 20 years earlier. His desire to reinstitute the Olympics was sparked by his countrymen's low morale, caused he believed, by their 1870 defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. By re-establishing the games he thought he would revive national spirit and restore competitive vigour. As testimony to this conviction the Olympic Creed states: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well." In 1892, de Coubertin's first attempt to gain international support for the Olympic Games failed. However, in 1894 he found the support and approval he needed. The baron organized the International Athletic Conference, representing sportsmen and physical education enthusiasts from 79 countries. The conference became the basis for the modern day International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The word athlete is a Greek word and connected with the words athlos , a contest for a prize, and athlon , a prize. An athlete is thus a person who competes for a prize. Origin of the Games Despite the attribution of the games to such legendary heroes as Pelops and Heracles, the consensus of opinion in antiquity was that the first Olympics began in 776BC. They were held in honour of Zeus of Olympia and were thus a religious festival, unlike the modern Olympics. As Zeus was the king of the gods, so were his games the most prestigious of the four great Panhellenic Games (Olympian, Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean).
