There are only six competitive athletes in international competition, however, the USBSF has identified one promising Podium prospect. Therefore, the USBSF will: a) continue to recruit potential world class athletes to the program and b) work through the Core Program to develop the identified athlete and new recruits. Leagues History of Women's Water Polo in the USA Women's water polo was played regularly in the United States until 1926, when the Nationals were won by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. After this time, the sport was considered too rough for women, and no Nationals were held for 35 years. The Ann Arbor Swim Club, coached by Rose Mary Dawson, was instrumental in reviving the sport. Ann Arbor, later coached by John Urbanchek, 1996 U.S. Men's Olympic Swimming Assistant Coach, won the Nationals in 1961 through 1963. The goalkeeper for Ann Arbor was Micki King, later a United States Olympic diving gold medallist. Northern Virginia Aquatic Club won seven national titles from 1964-69, although on the West Coast, Santa Clara Swim Club, with Pokey Watson Richardson and Claudia Kolb Thomas, both Olympic gold medallists in swimming, took two indoor titles in 1965 and 1966. Water polo was introduced into Florida by Rob DeVust in the late 1960s, with Florida teams winning the majority of the national championships from 1971-75, although the Cincinnati Marlins won the Indoors in 1974 with a team including Deena Deardurff and Jenny Kemp, both Olympic swimmers. Anaheim, later to become FAST (Fullerton Area Swim Team), coached by Stan Sprague, the 1978 National Team coach, won the Indoor Nationals in 1975 and 1977 and the Outdoors in 1976. Sainte Foy, from Quebec, Canada, coached by Claude Lavoie, won the 1976 Indoor Nationals. Merced, coached by Flip Hassett, the 1979 National Team coach, won the 1977 Outdoors. The 1978 and 1979 Indoor Nationals were won by Long Beach. Kelly Kemp coached these fine players from 1976 to 1978.

Drake Relays are new to me, so I will not pretend to know everything or – more honestly – anything about them. I tried the excuse; "I am not from Iowa so how could I be expected to know about such an event?" However, after discovering how wide the scope of participants run, my excuses are depleted. Therefore, I plead ignorance. Well, that is until I did a little research. Nevertheless, do not be fooled into thinking that only collegiates and Olympians can participate in the Relays. The Drake Relays also offer events for high school athletes. In addition, while the number of high school boy participants is twice the number of girl participants, slowly the playing field is leveling. High school boys have participated in the Relays for 92 years, while this year marks 40 years that high school girls will participate in the events. Several events were added for the girls to compete. These include: 100- and 400-meter hurdles, shuttle hurdle relay and 4 x 800 relay. While I am not a huge sports fan, I admire and respect these athletes as they follow their dreams and are diligent in preparing for the few minutes that can lead them to victory. I am sure that they have sacrificed, not only to maintain their fitness and strength, but also their mindset and emotions. For when they break a record and exceed expectations, they instantly know that they have fulfilled a dream.
