Extractions: A new online resource is called "The Gateway to Northwestern Ontario History Photos, Books, Drawings and Artifacts from Libraries and Museums of Northwestern Ontario." I had a chance to look at this site this week and must say that I was impressed. The Gateway to Northwestern Ontario contains more than 1,000 photographs and drawings as well as the full text of several books. I was fascinated by many of the photographs. One that really caught my eye was that of George Murdock McLeod, a an employee of the Port Arthur Duluth and Western Railway, and his faithful dog, Brownie, riding a railbike (velocipede), somewhere along the Pee-Dee line (Port Arthur Duluth & Western Railway) about 1906. I frequently ride a recumbent bicycle, which generates a few stares as I pedal by. However, the railbike that George Murdock McLeod rode would generate many more stares than my recumbent bicycle ever will. The railbike is a literally a "bicycle on railroad tracks." The railbike is only one of the 1,000+ photographs available, all taken in Ontario's frontier northland.

Pierre Giffard, head of the newspaper, decided that the event would be held once a decade, given the difficulty of the event-1200 KM on the roads of the day, before the invention of asphalt! Sixteen checkpoints were planned and the headlines of the newspaper read "National Bicycle Race ...". Charles Terront won the race in 71:35 with an average of 17.590 KPH on the way out and 16.780 on the way back. Jiel Laval was second at more than eight hours behind Terront and Coulliboeuf was third. Fewer than thiry finished the race; many coming in days later. In 1911 Emile Georget won in 50:13, beating Lapize by 0:21. Ernest Paul was 0:35 off the pace and Cornet finished fourth. Drafting crews were not allowed, but racers could change bicycles. Tourists were not allowed a change of bikes; as a precaution against cheating, bikes were tagged. In 1931 an Australian won. Hubert Opperman won in a sprint to the finish, beating Marcel Bidot. Sir Hubert Opperman, a dear friend, who's always Oppy to us, keeps in touch. He just celebrated his 83rd birthday on the bike and will surely be happy to help us celebrate PBP's centennial anniversary in 1991.

Extractions: The Highland Dancers' Association of Ontario was founded in 1949 by a group of parents and teachers with a view to promoting Highland Dance and Scottish culture and to improve the conditions for dancers at Highland games in Ontario. Today it continues as a volunteer parent association dedicated to the same goals. The first Annual General Meeting was held in 1950; in 1953 we received our charter from the Province of Ontario and in 1999 we became a registered charitable organization. The Annual General Meeting of the Association is held each September where the Executive is elected. Membership in the Association runs from September 1 to August 31. Benefits of membership are eligibility to compete at three indoor competitions held during the winter months, newsletters, entry forms to games organized by the HDA. In addition, parent members are encouraged to participate in the 3 meetings held during the year. We invite comments and suggestions from members which can be presented to the games in order to improve conditions for both. Membership is open to all residents of Ontario. Associate non-voting membership is available to persons outside of Ontario. Family membership consists of a parent(s), legal guardian(s) and dancer(s) in one family who reside at the same address and who are entitled to only one vote per family by a parent or legal guardian. Senior members are members 17 years of age or over. Senior members are entitled to a vote on all matters pertaining to the Association.

Massad Ontario was a mile down the road from Torrance, Ontario (in Muskoka) on Black Lake (and the water was black from minerals), off highway 169, between Gravenhurst and Bala. It had a small road by the train track hut called "Queens Walk Road", because Queen Elizabeth's train came through there when she apparently took a trip through Ontario many years ago. At the end of every camp session, the camp was split into two groups for a "colour war" known as the Massadia, that lasted about 3-4 days, and consisted of athletic and drama competition, "ruach", art, etc. (Todah Rabah to HartleyG and LyndaKfor the above info!)
