After the American Revolution, Captain Joseph Brant was rewarded for his loyalty to the Crown with a tract of land six miles wide on each side of the Grand River (then known as the Ouse River) from its mouth to its source. The first white settlers arrived in 1784 and many United Empire Loyalists were among the early inhabitants. Once the 1832 treaty between the government and Indians was signed, settlement in the area quickened. In 1832, several locks and dams were constructed and marked the launch of the navigation era. The villages of Seneca and Oneida amalgamated to form Caledonia in 1834, guided by "town father" Ranald McKinnon. Many of the street names originated because of McKinnon's Scottish background. A six-span swing bridge spanned the river by 1843. Three years later, the Hamilton-Port Dover Plan Road was complete, joining Caledonia to its neighbors. Businesses of the time included saw and grist mills, a distillery, lumberyards and milling companies, taverns, tailors, wagon-makers and a blacksmith. The Anglican and Presbyterian churches were built mid-Century. Caledonia's population was about 300. The transportation link continued with the 1852 building of the first railway line and a second in 1873.

The museum's Archaeologists have traced the development of southwestern Ontario's Native People through the long and patient study of over 200 site excavations throughout southwestern Ontario during the last 22 years. These excavations represent all periods of Native occupation, from their nomadic beginnings in a frozen land 11,000 years ago to a settled village life, living as the early European explorers found them just 450 years past. T he archaeological and other scientific evidence gathered becomes a blueprint of how people lived. Artifacts, ranging from pottery vessels to smoking pipes and from arrowheads to harpoons, start to draw the picture. Garbage becomes a gold mine of information. Middens (garbage dumps) reveal animal bone, plant remains including charcoal from fires, as well as the by-products of the manufacture of tools. Settlement data, such as post moulds in the ground, reveal palisades, houses, and other structures. Hearth floors and pits seen as dark stains in the yellow subsoil make the picture more precise. M any pieces to this fascinating archaeological puzzle are still missing, prompting continuous research for a clearer understanding of this story.
