Extractions: About the Tennis Plus Program cooperation, imagination, relaxation, and self-esteem, while learning the basic tennis strokes. Honing these skills provides immediate dividends on the court, as well as being highly transferable to school and other settings. Star Tennis also includes off-court life-skill activities to reinforce what the children are learning on the court. JSF has been offering Tennis Plus programs year-round to children in the Washington, DC area since 1994. The program is still ongoing at our first Tennis Plus, Ramsay Elementary School in Alexandria, VA. We offer children there a rich, multi-faceted learning experience including off-court life skills training, environmental education, computer education, karate, and special field trips and guest speakers. Tennis Plus Camps After-School Programs and Special Workshops Tennis Plus also works well as an after-school enrichment program. Weekly or biweekly classes are engaging as well as educational for the children. After-school programs generally include an hour on-court and an additional hour of off-court life skills training. JSF also provides special one or two hour introductory Tennis Plus workshops. These offer children an exciting way to get started with the game and learn how sports can be used to enhance personal growth in a fun, cooperative way.

Extractions: Benton County 4-H has been working actively to better identify and reach Latino youth (K-6) in the Corvallis area. Small grants from the Oregon Outreach Project in 1998 and 1999 have supported the 4-H program effort, which has begun to yield results. Working with several churches and Corvallis Neighborhood Housing staff, 4-H is working to reach Latino youth and families through activities planned at churches and schools. One 4-H club composed of Latino and Caucasian elementary youth and led by a Latina is underway. The program hopes to involve at least 30 Latino youth by the end of 1999, both through targeted programming and through activities offered by the general county 4-H program. A part-time (10 hours per week) bilingual 4-H aide has been hired to support Latino 4-H clubs and their leaders, connect with parents to explain the 4-H program, and to generally market the 4-H program to Latino audiences. Lane County Lane County will use a small grant from the Oregon Outreach Project to provide a week of 4-H camp for 7-10 Latino youth in the summer of 1999. Funds will be used to help with camp fees as well as equipment needed for the camp experience. Providing the camp experience is one component of a Lane County 4-H effort to connect with and involve more Latino youth and families in 4-H. A Latino teen will also be recruited as a staff member for the camp to act as a liaison between families and the camp and to help Latino youth as needed. Local schools and the EFNEP program will assist in the identification and recruitment of Latino youth campers.
