Extractions: Oregon Schools to Hold Mock Elections from October 26-31 SALEM As many as 360 middle schools and high schools in Oregon are expected to hold mock elections between October 26 and October 31 as part of the Oregon Student Mock Election program. Most schools will conduct their mock election using paper ballots, however 46 schools will offer students the choice of voting via the Internet or telephone Students will vote for candidates for President, U.S. Representative, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, and Attorney General. Five of the twenty-six state ballot measures on the actual November 7, 2000, general election ballot are included on the Mock Election ballot. These are Ballot Measures 89, 95, 4, 5, and 9. Students will also vote on four national issues designated by the National Student/Parent Mock Election program. A list of Oregon schools that plan to participate in the mock vote and a copy of the mock ballot are available through the Oregon Student Mock Election web site. The Oregon High Performance Learning Community (HPLC) Project builds on the success of the national HPLC Project funded by the US Department of Education. As part of this unique collaboration, we provide technical assistance to specialists from the ODE as they learn how to become school coaches using the HPLC approach to school improvement. Eleven Oregon schools from across the state learn about and use the HPLC Cycle of School Improvement guided by the five HPLC Principles which include; Shared Vision, Learning Community, Challenging and Meaningful Curriculum, Supportive Organizational Structure, and Proactive Community Relations. Skills: School team members will be trained in the Six Essential Skills and Habits of Mind necessary to carry out whole-school change linked to student achievement and equity. These include: 1) Planning for whole-school change based on HPLC Principles, 2) Using data-based inquiry in a cycle of school improvement, 3) Working toward an equity goal that student achievement is not predictable based on a student's ethnicity, gender, or home language, 4) Learning to adopt and adapt strategies that work, 5) Building the know-how to implement change, and 6) Developing a collaborative infrastructure for continuously improving classroom practice.

Farrell School (Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility) and Lord High School (MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility). Approximately 600 adjudicated youth ranging in age from 12 to 25, are served at the two schools. Robert S. Farrell has approximately 180 youth in a co-educational environment and Lord High School has approximately 425. Enrollment hovers around 11,300. The District is comprised of 16 elementary schools serving students in kindergarten through grade five; five middle schools serving students in grades six through eight; and three high schools serving students in grades nine through twelve. One of the three is Gateways Learning Center, an alternative program , serving over 100 students who are not finding success in traditional school settings. Extractions: Situated on a north bend of the Coos Bay estuary, the towns history dates back to the 1850s, when there were sawmills and a handful of houses. It took the vision of an early 20th Century lumberman named Louis Simpson to make the settlement into a proper city, with the proper name North Bend. Simpsons father had started the towns original sawmill, and the businesses expanded to include mills that turned out a variety of wood products, from fruit boxes to fancy doors. There were machines shops and foundry, a woolen mill, a furniture factory, milk condesary, brewery and two shipyards, which turned out a steady stream of wooden schooners that took Simpson lumber to San Francisco and other distant markets. North Bend had the regions first hospital, three churches and probably three times as many saloons and brothels. North Bend claims a place in aviation history. In 1913, Vern Gorst brought a hydroplane to North Bend. In 1925 Pacific Air Lines, and air mail carrier with an occasional passenger riding uncomfortably atop the mail sacks, was founded by Gorst in the North Bend Hotel. Pacific Air Lines later merged with other companies to become United Airlines. During World War II, Kruse and Banks Shipyards built minesweepers and rescue tugs for the United States Navy. In 1960, Pony Village Shopping Center, the first covered mall on the Oregon Coast, was established. Industrial activity of the 1950s through 1970s centered on forest products, but the towns main sawmills closed in the 1980s as timber companies finished cutting the regions old-growth forests.
