    Extractions: Ben is two years old, and arrived in my office to use acupuncture for his pain. He had difficulty walking, and the x-rays showed congenital hip problems. Even one-year post-operative, the doctors projected a life of pain and misery. A few days after the first treatment, Ben's companion called the primary care doctor, reporting some unusual behavior. Initially, Ben had seemed very tired from the acupuncture treatment. Several days later, he was found in the contorted position of scratching his ear with his foot. Ben had never been seen in this position in all of his short life. The doctor reassured her that this is actually perfectly normal behavior for a four-year-old Labrador retriever! Ben showed signs of difficulty walking when he was less than six months old. X-rays confirmed the diagnosis of hip displasia. Since this was early enough to allow for surgery, a triple osteotomy was performed. Approximately a year after the surgery, Ben began to show signs of pain again, at which time the veterinarian referred him for acupuncture. Acupuncture treatment has ameliorated that pain and Ben is now able to live a completely normal life for a Lab. Ben comes for follow up treatments approximately every two or three months. His mobility in the house and yard remain within normal limits for several months after each treatment. The root treatment is in the Water element, with attention also being given to the sacral Urinary Bladder points.

Overview: Headache is one of the most frequently seen complaints in the acupuncturist's practice. Effective treatment can be difficult to realize on a consistent basis due to the number of potential causative factors, channels, and zang fu conditions that may be involved. This article discusses the approach to difficult headache conditions employed by Dr. Richard Tan, OMD, L.Ac., presenting a case study that illustrates the way in which Dr. Tan approaches this common but often complex problem. The Balance method of Dr. Tan is in part a distal point, minimal needle system of acupuncture treatment. It is extremely effective in the rapid treatment of headache and almost any other condition in which pain and/ or numbness are the major concerns. His two books, "Twelve and Twelve in Acupuncture" and " Twenty four More in Acupuncture", are both in their second editions and introduce the reading practitioner to many of Dr. Tan's favorite distal points and their remarkable effects. Dr. Tan derives his Balance method theory from his study of the underlying philosophical principles of the I Ching, or Book of Changes. He applies the same theoretical findings that he uses in his acupuncture for his approach to herbal prescriptions, Feng Shui, and Chi Cultivation. Case Study: A woman, age 40, came to see Dr. Tan for treatment of a chronic headache condition. She was currently recovering from the effects of a sinus infection diagnosed by her M.D., for which she was prescribed antibiotics. She was still suffering from headache and stiff neck symptoms, for which she had already tried several "alternative" - type treatments, all to no avail. She decided it was time to try acupuncture as a possible adjunct to her conventional medical treatment. She had a history of headache problems, sinus problems, and neck pain that went back several years. She stated that the headache symptoms had become, in her opinion, progressively worse in recent years. Like so many other patients, she felt that stress in her everyday life greatly exacerbated these symptoms, and contributed to an overall feeling of unease, including a decrease in the quality of her sleep.
