Two such programmes presently in progress are: While housekeeping measures and energy conservation efforts to a certain extent reduce energy consumption, there is no better approach than achieving energy efficiency through pre-implementation design efforts. For new industrial projects coming up in the State, EMC provide cost-effective, energy efficient and environmentally sound technologies specific to the end-use application. Eight hamlets in the Baihualing village: Hanlong, Dayutang (Upper, Lower), Bangwai-Guxingzhai, Taoyuan, Laomengzhai-Baihualing-Malishan, Manggang, Manghuang. These hamlets directly abut the perimeter of the Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve and form the primary gateway for access to the reserve from the east (figure 3).

Extractions: This report is prepared to summarize the activities on our campus that have resulted from the selection to participate in this grant awarded to the Coalition for Christian Colleges and Universities through the Pew Foundation's Global Stewardship Initiative. Montreat College's selection to participate in this grant effort coincided very effectively with the initiation of our Christian Environmental Studies Center (CESC @ MC). This center's directives are to establish collaborative efforts between Christian Environmental Organizations, academic programming, and the Christian Community. The supportive efforts of the CCCU / Pew GSI grant and the developments in the CESC @ MC both will be reflected in this report since these developments were very significantly linked. The formation of a campus Global Stewardship Task Force (GSTF) was requested immediately upon selection to participate in this grant. Those individuals that contributed to the grant development and the team consulted in the discussions of the CESC @ MC were designated as the GSTF. Thus, the GSTF was established on campus to both administrate the activities of the Global Stewardship Initiative and review the developments of the Christian Environmental Studies Center @ Montreat College.

Extractions: Henn Ojaveer from the Estonian Marine Institute completed his Great Lakes/Baltics fellowship in GLNPO on December 1st. His project examined the impacts of an invasive zooplankton species, Cercopagis pengoi, common to both the Great Lakes and the Baltic Sea. This invasive organism is potentially problematic in that it is very prolific and may be able to out-compete other native zooplankton species. It also has a large hooked tail and has been documented to foul fishing gear. On November 23rd Henn presented a seminar detailing the results of his work, with a final report to be completed by February 2000. As an aside, Cercopagis, which was found for the first time in Lake Ontario in 1998, was found this past summer in Lake Michigan in Traverse Bay and off of Waukegan Harbor. Extractions: Organization INTRODUCTION For nearly four decades, Bird Studies Canada (BSC), formerly known as the Long Point Bird Observatory (LPBO), has marshalled thousands of volunteers for bird studies. It now draws over 6,000 volunteers annually, actively participating in local, regional, national and international programs of research and education in support of bird conservation. In response to this growth of interest and commitment, BSC is entering a new phase of its history. BSC obtained revised Supplementary Letters Patent in April 1998, and has adopted a new constitution (By-Law Number 1). The future brings new opportunities along with challenges and risks. They require adaptation and innovation. "Strategic" activities are those needed to secure the long term viability and effectiveness of the organization and its programs. The strategic plan (and the planning processes that led to it) identifies key directions and actions that provide focus and a practical "operating envelope" for directing the work that lies ahead. The plan provides a context for the periodic re-setting of priorities, and for developing business plans, a communications program and other measures to achieve them. The main audience for this document is internal to BSC, i.e. Board, committees, and staff. Information in the document will also be useful, in other formats, for members and the general public. The document identifies a mission and a vision, the underlying values and principles, and the strategic intents and objectives for BSC. It builds upon the wealth of experience from LPBO, which continues as an integral part of BSC. The document will be revised and up-dated periodically in the light of experience and achievements.
