Product Description

Is obesity an illness? What is the connection between weight and genetics? These and other issues are explored in this balanced, in-depth introduction to the medical, scientific, legal, and cultural issues surrounding obesity and its import in healthcare.

This volume in the Health and Medical Issues Today series provides everything a student requires to understand the issues surrounding obesity, at the same time offering a springboard for further research into the issue.

Every day, newspapers and television news programs present stories on the latest controversies over healthcare and medical advances, but they do not have the space to provide detailed background on the issues. Websites and weblogs provide information from activists and partisans intent on presenting their side of a story. But where can students - or even ordinary citizens - go to obtain unbiased, detailed background on the medical issues affecting their daily lives? This volume in the Health and Medical Issues Today series provides readers and researchers a balanced, in-depth introduction to the medical, scientific, legal, and cultural issues surrounding obesity and its import in today's world of healthcare.

Product Description
This book provides a comprehensive compilation of the evidence available regarding the role of genetic differences in the etiology of human obesities and their health and metabolic implications. It also identifies the most promising research areas, methods, and strategies for use in future efforts to understand the genetic basis of obesities and their consequences on human health. Leading researchers in their respective fields present contributed chapters on such topics as etiology and the prevalence of obesities, nongenetic determinants of obesity and fat topography, and animal models and molecular biological technology used to delineate the genetic basis of human obesities. A major portion of the book is devoted to human genetic research and clinical observations encompassing adoption studies, twin studies, family studies, single gene effects, temporal trends and etiology heterogeneity, energy intake and food preference, energy expenditure, and susceptibility to metabolic derangements in the obese state. Future directions of research in the field are covered in the book as well. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
We are currently facing an alarming obesity epidemic, with its well-known health consequences such as metabolic syndrome/type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, an increased incidence of certain types of cancer, musculoskeletal disorders and pulmonary diseases. Experimental and clinical evidence accumulated in recent years now suggests that obesity has also a major effect on renal structure and function. Since the adipocyte is considered a source of many hormones and cytokines, obesity has much more direct influences on renal function besides mediating hypertension. It can by itself induce renal disease such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, but also, more commonly, bring about progression of chronic renal diseases. The present volume is the first comprehensive compilation dedicated to this important topic, featuring discussions of pathophysiological as well as clinical aspects written by the leaders in this emerging field of research. It brings together pathophysiological concepts on how obesity influences renal structure and function, reviews the epidemiology of the problem and provides therapeutic suggestions. This publication is recommended for internists, nephrologists, hypertensiologists, cardiologists, and urologists treating patients with obesity and renal diseases. Furthermore, basic scientists such as renal physiologists, renal pathologists, pharmacologists, biochemists, and epidemiologists who want a comprehensive overview of the topic will also profit from this book. ...
