A unique and compelling history of earth
Although I'm a scientist and I love the outdoors, I had only a rudimentary knowledge of geology/earth sciences before reading this book.Origins interweaves the history of the earth's continents, climate, and the evolution of life, and explains with clarity how they are interconnected.A running theme is that change has been, and will remain, a hallmark of our planet.Continents move.Ice advances and retreats.And life is always adapting.

The issue of man-made climate change is touched upon, but Redfern's primary goal is to elucidate the inevitable longer-term forces at play.For instance, it is nearly certain that Earth will re-enter a glacial period within the next couple of thousand years -- a tiny time frame by geological standards.

But, what makes this book truly compelling is the photography.The author utilizes dramatic landscape (and ice-scape) photography to tell the story of Earth's history.Origins serves as a non-technical science book AND a beautiful piece of art for the coffee table.

And, no, I have no connection to the author.I'm just very impressed with this book.

Like being there through words and pictures
I can't add anymore about content than what has already been said.This is an excellent introduction to anyone interested in the Plate Tectonic history of the Earth.

The narrative along with the excellent images went a long way in helping clarify the dance that the continents have been doing for the last 4.6 billion years.

I kept an Earth globe with me along with several other paleo-maps I've collected over the years.They all helped in keeping track of what the author was refering to in each chapter.

I'm really glad that he took the time in laying out the early part of the Earth's geologic history and made only a fairly brief mention of mans time on the planet.It could have been even shorter that it was, but for the most part he kept it reasonable.

I am a retired USGS Geologist/Scientific Illustrator, and have read and Illustrated many USGS publications.I only wish I could have been involved in the preparation of this book.

Plate Tectonics
This is, without doubt, the best review of plate tectonics yet published.I'm surprised that more has not been popularly written about this subject than has been.

A Unique Approach to Earth Systems Understanding
I have had the priveledge of close association with the author, Ron Redfern, throughout the writing, organization and photographic activities that support this publication. In acareer of geology-based endeavors, I have never enjoyed a more unique, thorough and emminently readable portrayal of the interlocking sciences that result in the Earth's evolutionary history. This is a complex subject. However, the author has made the 700 million year trip a pleasure. The beautiful, panoramic photography, the interweaving of summary-level essays, and meticulously time-based text, lavishly supported by color illustrations, gives the reader a multi-disciplinary view of not only our planet's geologic evolution, but also its close association with meteorological events and the evolution of life. The reader will want to read and re-read this book. A wonderful adventure, every time, with new perspectives of "how things work" discovered on each page.

Required reading for entering oceanography students.
There's a prof at Scripps who tells his entering students to read this book.I concur.I know many of the characters in the book and I believe Dr. Crane has accurately portrayed them. The nastiness of some of the characters is not gender based - the individuals will screw both genders equally. It's hard for me to tell when it's gender based or not; the people are just nasty, high strung, insecure people.

A Fascinating Page Turner
I really didn't know what to expect when I picked up Kathleen Crane's memoirs of her experiences in graduate school at Scripps and her professional life.To many, it might seem that a book on oceanography is a bit too esoteric or "niche" to be of interest to the general public.

But "Sea Legs" is a truly fascinating, deeply (no pun intended) interesting book.For the scientifically inclined, the detailed descriptions of Crane's work will be of great interest.But the general reader benefits the most from this book, as the reader accompanies Crane and her colleagues on numerous voyages of discovery to fascinating destinations."Sea Legs" is well worth your time, and beleive me, it is a real page turner.

Excellent Read
The Magic Tree House Series is wonderful. My 10 yr old daughter had been reading the series since she was 8.It appeals to both boys & girls. It also stresses cooperation & a bond between siblings. Very Good book!
The quality of the book is very good! Obviously, being from Nat Geographic it treats the very old earth evolutionary view of the world as if it were scientific fact. Other than that... the quality of the book is outstanding.

Concise History of the World by National Geographic
A good reference for significant world history events.While in depth information is not the purpose of the book the comparative timeline is great for revealing parallel events in other parts of the world.

I wasn't quite ready for the book's layout- it's written using timeline, column and rows with an occasional break to preface or highlight an era using paragraphs etc. This isn't historical fiction but then how could it be? There's far too much imformation for that- it is after all a history of the world! Once I got the hang of the layout I beggan to enjoy it reading it bit by bit. Probably best used to focus in on a particular time or culture- when backgound info is needed. This NG book will add to anyone's library- pick it up.

Frozen Earth--Ice Ages
I liked this book. I have known about "Snowball Earth" for a long time. I have studied Geology and read many books about the ice ages. This author explains the concepts skillfully. It is too bad that some readers do not understand the concepts of geology, astronomy and earth sciences. But this author gives an organized and clear story of the history of our planet. Ice has played a critical role in the evolution of our planet.

He notes that we are currently in a inter-glacial (warm) period. Guess what? The ice will come again. Humans should think about this and plan accordinally.

Bravo! ... entertaining and comprehensive
Bravo ... excellent book! There is not much to say that others reviewers had already said. This is a very well written book that allows you to know some of the pioneer scientists that contributed to understand earth's past climate fluctuations and how geologist today have derived techniques to gather information from millions of years ago, such as ice/sediment coring, minerals magnetization, isotopes variation and others. For those who likes history, this is a book you must read, a book where the main character is the earth, and this is part of its biography. The earth has and perhaps will have another Ice Age, but as the author remarks at the end of the book, the increase of CO2 could eventually change this to a point that it would take too long to recover. We still don't know this clearly but we must be careful, so controlling CO2 emissions is a good precaution measure. As a complement of this book, I suggest to watch some of BBC Horizon documentaries like "The Big Freeze" and "Snowball Earth" or PBS "Mystery of the Mega Flood".

Frozen Earth is a very good history of the earth's ice ages.The writing is a bit academic at times, and often feels a little too detailed (which is normally a compliment, but seems to slow down the pace of this book more than it should have).This book would be an excellent resource for students of geology and climatology.If you are interested in climate change, this book would make an excellent companion piece to "The Discovery of Global Warming", because "Frozen Earth" could have been aptly titled "The Discovery of Ice Ages". ... Adventure and devestation
October 1991 produced one of the most devastating storms to hit the North Atlantic. Follow the crew of the Andrea Gail as it struggles for survival in tumultuous seas and learn how the rescue attempts of other ships caught in the Perfect Storm went horribly wrong.

Mesmerizing book -- awesome story of some brave men who face the seas daily, some to their peril.
The book was fantastic -- wonderful work -- my son and I thoroughly enjoyed this moving, sad and inspiring true story.Sebastian Junger did the crew justice.

less than I expected
I kept waiting for the real good part of the book, but then I was at the last page and somewhat surprised. There are no whopping thrill rides, but you do get a picture that is pretty easy to envision (credit to the writer). I was disappointed and wouldn't recommend the book in it's entirety. I did enjoy learning a brief bit about the pararescuers and their training. that was the best part of the book; the brief section which describes the storm, how it formed, and the rescuers, and how they were formed. The rest was just extra pages that made it a complete story.

beautiful competent storytelling
I relish the style of competent, detailed, unembellished storytelling that Junger does in this work.Precise factual descriptions of the circumstances, facts, and action of the fishing boat caught in a gale bring this to concrete life in a way that makes a vision more palpably real than the well known film on the same topic.I liked the film in its own right but this book is something different, a wholly different work that stands in the first rank of books of this type.I recommend it strongly to those with any interest in nautical subjects of any kind.

I just started reading this, and it is a good story so far.However, the Kindle formatting is atrocious and that is what this rating is about.No quote marks around dialogue?Seriously?Paragraphs in the wrong places?Really?This is a real disappointment and difficult to read as a result.Hopefully as I read it the formatting will improve, but I looked ahead a bit and it does not look promising. ...
